  • Seven-acre smallholding in the Cambridgeshire countryside
  • A 45-minute drive from Cambridge; fishing and golf a walk away
  • Lots of hands-on activities including collecting eggs or feeding lambs
Ready for hands-on hols? Head over to Pidley Bottom Shepherd's Huts, 15 minutes’ drive from St Ives (the Cambridgeshire one, not the Cornwall one…) and the folk on this friendly working farm will be happy to let you get stuck in to some of the more accessible aspects of farming life. What’s going on depends on the time of year, but it’s quite possible that you’ll be able to lend a hand collecting eggs, bottle-feeding lambs, keeping an eye on chicks hatching, and maybe having a tractor ride. There are plenty of beasts to feed on this seven-acre smallholding too – the goats, in particular, love to be fussed over while you’re there, and the pigs always appreciate a bit of a back scratch. Of course, any such activity isn’t obligatory – you’re equally welcome to leave the old hands to it while you go for a ramble on the Pathfinder Long Distance Walk (which passes by the farm), settle in the paddock or by the pond with a book (or a bottle of something), or book a session in the sauna or hot tub. Cambridge is a 45-minute drive away for days out and there’s golf and fishing within a short walk, plus bikes to hire for local pottering (and go-karts for kids to career around on site). Allocating plenty of time to meals is a fine idea too; the farm sells lots of tasty home-reared and home-cured meats and local produce, and has a barbecue area at which to cook it. If you’re not in the mood for cooking after a long day of hanging out with cute animals, there’s a pub five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Keep going with the Cambridgeshire country pursuits by heading out directly from the farm for a hike on the Pathfinder Long Distance Walk, wandering over the road for a game of golf at the Lakeside Lodge Golf Centre or stashing your fishing kit in the car for the couple of minutes’ drive to the local fishing lakes. Heading a little further away from the farm, local trips might include meeting the big birds at the Raptor Foundation (10 minutes’ drive), seeking out their smaller cousins at RSPB Fen Drayton Lakes (half an hour) or seeing how flour gets made the old-fashioned way at Houghton Mill (20 minutes). Quite in contrast but still packed with pretty views is a city day out in Cambridge (45 minutes) for tours of the famed colleges, museum visits (the Fitzwilliam Museum and Centre for Computing History are popular picks) and trying your hand at punting along the River Cam.
