  • Riverside pitches at a rural spot around 10 miles from Cambridge
  • Shepreth Wildlife Park 20 minutes' walk; 25 mins' drive to Audley End
  • Easy access to well-lit cycle path, main road and train station
Day out in Cambridge or some time spent wandering around the countryside? Either one is equally possible for guests staying at Shepreth Mill. This Cambridgeshire site is just under 10 miles from Cambridge city centre but also surrounded by lovely rural landscapes to explore. Getting around should be nice and straightforward – and you’ll have options too. The A10 passes just by the site, as does a new cycle path running all the way to the city (it’s all lit up at night so don’t worry about staying in town for a drink or some food). Shepreth village is a mile away, with a train station for those who’d rather get around by public transport. The village also has a tea room, and there’s a pub a few minutes' walk from the site too, but for more eating options and shops you’ll need to head to Melbourn (five minutes’ drive) or on to Royston (10 minutes). When not out and about, you’ll be staying at a pretty site that’s got a river bordering two sides and a lake within the grounds. The lake is a good place for wildlife spotting, as the island has ducks, moorhens and swans on it at all times; look out across the river Shep, meanwhile, and you may spot the residents of the badger sett on the other side. If you fancy a lengthier exploration of the river, you can stroll along the waterside path that leads to an RSPB reserve in one direction and a good coffee shop in the other. Simple facilities on site include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point.

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Lovely small site with shower and toilet facilities. Great location near to Cambridge and lovely villages of Shepreth and Melbourn. We walked with our young son from the campsite to the train station in shepreth and had a day out in Cambridge it was so convenient. The owners were very welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed. It is close to the A10 but wasn’t too noisy for us at all, plus its convenient location is great. Definitely check out the coffee shop and bakery (hot numbers) round the corner - perfect for breakfast! We also drive to the ticklearms for Sunday lunch for my husbands birthday. Was delicious and only a short drive away.

Liked: A nice little site,a diamond in the rough which if it capitalised on its history and water features would end up with five stars,we were greeted warmly upon arrival and we'll catered for.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Our journey back from France had been great until we got to the M11, then standstill, so we looked for a campsite nearby, easy to find and book on pitch up. Great friendly hosts who explained everything we needed to know on site and in the local area. Clean and tidy site and a peaceful nights sleep.

Disliked: Industrial toilet/shower cubicles, very shabby and unwelcoming. Needs a cute toilet block/dish wash area to match site. Could not find campsite on Google maps,it took us onto someone's drive until we asked a passer by for directions.

Electric optional grass and gravel pitch

Liked: Plenty of walks nearby with pub almost next door. Walkable to shops and other pubs.

Disliked: Main gripe is that I was charged £5 per night for electric - on hot summer days this is excessive. Especially as I was paying £30 per night stay. Toilets/showers are in portable cabins at the moment, but are clean 👌 Site is still a building site.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Really helpful host. Firstly because I had to telephone about our stay and then ring because we’d followed the satnav and it took us to the old road. Then because I thought I’d lost my engagement ring but it turned up in the soap dish in camper…. He searched the pitch and phoned back! Clean facilities and lots of disposal points. Lovely outlook onto the duck pond. We were attending an evening event at Duxford and this was an ideal spot to stay. Thank you again. Hope to see you again 😀

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: First impressions are that this is a small but well kept site. Large pitches. We were staying and travelling in a long wheelbase campervan and the hardstanding pitch was well sized, we also had a large grass area for a gazebo and space for bbq/parking a car if you have one. Gazebo was part of thw price, electric pitch.

Disliked: Small site, not much for the children to explore and make friends. Toilets although clean are dated, only one working light in the ladies toilets so most cubicles very dark, husband said men's toilets weren't very nice. Showers are small and dated. Difficult with a child in there with you, son 10y autistic needs assistance in the shower and daughter 8y couldn't reach shower to do it alone. Showers worked well though but also are separate from toilets. Fresh water tap isn't with other amenities it is the other side of the site near one of the pitches. It had a hose attached which was filthy and made the water in our water bottles dirty so we removed it to fill our bottles, then water was fine. One of the owners asked another camper to put the hose back on, so that may need looking into

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Great location as a base to explore the local area. We stayed just for a night as we were going to Audley End House which is only a 25min drive away. There is a wildlife park close and a war museum close by too! A decent pub with home cooked food and a garden for the kids to play in is a 7 minute walk down the road and a little further is one of the greatest coffee roasters and places for breakfast we've been too. The campsite itself is small but had everything we needed. Toilets and shower blocks were clean! The host/owner was on hand if we needed them and was very friendly. Pitch sizes were good! Were now trying to find a reason to return!

Disliked: Nothing... just sad we only had the 1 night! Small children's play area would be great but not completely necessary!

Local attractions

While you’re up in Shepreth (20 minutes' walk), stop in at Shepreth Wildlife Park to meet all sorts of exotic animals including tigers, aardvarks and red pandas. The same amount of walking in the opposite direction will take you to RSPB Fowlmere to see native species instead. It’s likely you’ll spot some wildlife while out and about too – the walk from Barrington to Haslingfield is a particular favourite, with great views over Cambridge too. For a closer look at what Cambridge (half an hour by car or public transport) has to offer, spend a day (or more) in the city, dipping in and out of the colleges, visiting the museums and taking a boat trip on the river. To see some more fabulous buildings, plan outings to the National Trust estates Wimpole Hall (15 minutes), centred around a splendid 17th-century mansion, and Anglesey Abbey (half an hour), which also has gorgeous gardens and a woodland play area. Audley End (25 minutes) is another lovely estate that’s well worth a visit.
