General

  • Peaceful family-friendly site 20 minutes' walk from Ramsey town centre
  • Half an hour's drive from the Nene Valley Railway; 40 minutes from Ely
  • Playground, space for games and river frontage for seasonal fishing

Hankering after a country getaway but fearful of being stranded far from life’s useful amenities? Fret not, for it’s possible that Rivermill Touring Caravan and Camping Park’s nifty location may have the compromise you’re after.

Yes, this is a place where you can settle to enjoy a peaceful break in the Fens, fishing in the river that passes by the site, trotting out on to the footpaths that cross the local area or just putting your feet up with a beer in one hand and binoculars in the other to see what wildlife you can spot (muntjac deer, red kites, kestrels and kingfishers are among the creatures that sometimes call by).

And then when you need to head out, you can do so most easily – no need even to get in the car if you wish, as it’s a mere 20-minute toddle into Ramsey’s historic town centre for pubs, restaurants, banks and the like, with a sizeable supermarket even closer for foodie supplies. Should the rural pace of life leave you unwilling even to trot that far, local takeaways are happy to deliver up here.

If you’ve brought nippers who don’t believe in relaxing times, you’ll be chuffed to see there’s a playground on site, along with plenty of space for them to hare about and tire themselves out.

Rivermill is an unoccupied site, but it has a security gate.

Toilets were filthy, owner/manager away on holidays apparently, should have left a caretaker or cleaner! Very hard to find even by post code . Put us at the supermarket ! No good orientation on pitch grounds considering owner away. Plugged into several electrical outlets before finding one that worked !

From the manager...

Lots of people manage to find us, there is a phone number you could of called, I would have gladly told you the rest of the very short journey you had to make.
As for the electrics, if you turned the trip switch on you would have had electric, it would seem some of my campers turn them off before they leave, others leave them on, it's not hard to figure out, it's the big switch out the 3!
Once I clean the facilities, I then go about going to work, and seeing to my young family, so if they have become "filthy" in-between my next arrival ( daily) you could have phoned me, I would have come down myself as we don't get the luxury of going away as we run the site ourselves. I can't be held responsible for the actions of others.
Many thanks
Vicky

Peaceful setting, nice small site, adequate pitch sizes.nice and close to the nearest town and big supermarket.shower room was a nice size, not the modernist of rooms but the shower itself had great pressure and kept its temperature lovely.

    Disliked:

The dirt track leading to the site was horrendous, covered in very deep potholes that shook the car and caravan terribly whilst travelling along it and very unavoidable.toilet block isn't ideal if you have mobility issues as it's a big step up into them with no ramp available to help.ladies toilets were blocked and could do with a little tlc in general.

From the manager...

Thank you for your review, a step or ramp is something we have actually been considering, so I appreciate your thoughts on that, the shower room will be modernised once the new one is finished, but I'm glad your happy with the pressure etc.
I have been and put some female touches to the ladies 😊 but I would have loved a call to let me know one was blocked, I wasn't prepared for that when I went down one morning after being there the day before. ( Didn't have what I needed to fix it there and then)
Many thanks

Local attractions

You need not roam far to hit the local leisure facilities – Ramsey has not one but two golf courses, and a sports centre with a sizeable pool and a lengthy list of kids’ activities throughout the summer hols.

Looking a little further afield, a good day out can be had at the Raptor Foundation, 20 minutes away, meeting the birds of prey in their rehab centre and watching flying displays. There are also wild beasts galore (including kangaroos and big cats) over at Hamerton Zoo Park, half an hour away.

Train buffs will likely want to roll along to the Nene Valley Railway, half an hour away, where vintage steam and diesel trains run to Yarwell or Peterborough. Come along at the right time and you might even see Thomas the Tank Engine putting in a guest appearance. Closer to home, the Fenland Light Railway, 10 minutes away, runs miniature trains that are perennially popular with the tinies.

If you're more into your historic buildings, it's worth making the 40-minute drive to Ely for its cathedral, stained glass museum and Oliver Cromwell's House.

Must see

  • Peterborough Cathedral (9.4 miles)
  • Ely Cathedral (16.5 miles)
  • Cambridge American Cemetery and Memorial (18.5 miles)

National Trust

  • Houghton Mill (9.1 miles)
