Looking to unplug and escape the 21st century somewhere peaceful and scenic? Sounds like Gathr is right up your street… Sitting atop a hill in the Cambridgeshire countryside 20 minutes’ drive from the cathedral city of Ely, this site is set on land that’s run as an organic market garden, with spacious pitches giving you plenty of room to relax and reconnect with your environment. Gathr is off grid, with low-impact facilities including clean composting toilets, eco-friendly bucket showers and dedicated recycling points. There’s no mains electricity and no wifi, so you really will switch off from the world and settle into a back-to-basics camping adventure. You can wake up to birdsong, commune with the free-range sheep and goats, spend time on local walks and wind up your evenings stargazing around a campfire under unpolluted night skies. Tucked away from modern life it might be, but the site is in pole position for exploring Cambridgeshire’s myriad of attractions. Lovers of spectacular art and architecture can head for historic Cambridge, while closer to the site are cute fenland villages, traditional country pubs and nature reserves teeming with wildlife.

Local attractions

Flying slightly below the tourist radar, gorgeous Ely (20 minutes’ drive) is just the place to kickstart your local explorations. Admire the distinctive octagonal tower and visit the Stained Glass Museum in the handsome 11th-century cathedral, see the half-timbered family home of Oliver Cromwell and have a wander along the scenic banks of the River Great Ouse. Once in Ely, you can up your green credentials by abandoning your vehicle and taking the train to Cambridge (20 minutes by train/40 minutes’ drive); have a nose around the spectacular university colleges, dip into contemporary art at Kettle’s Yard and see great paintings from across the world at the Fitzwilliam Museum. Need a break from culture? Go punting on the River Cam. When you’d rather stick with rural pursuits, you may get lucky and spot hen harriers at National Trust - Wicken Fen Nature Reserve (20 minutes’ drive), where there are Highland cattle and Konik ponies grazing freely. Kids with you? Have a splash around on the floating obstacle courses at Cambridge Aqua Park (open in summer only).
