  • Peaceful, leafy Cambridgeshire pop-up glampsite on an organic farm
  • Cambridge 20 minutes’ drive and IWM Duxford half an hour
  • Exclusive-use bell tent; bathroom and kitchen in a converted horse box
Surrounded by the peaceful Cambridgeshire fens, Fenland Hideaway is an exclusive-use pop-up site with a single bell tent tucked into a leafy corner of an organic farm. It’s actually only a 20-minute drive from the centre of Cambridge, but this quiet retreat feels like an entirely different world. On arrival, leave your car in the farmyard; from there it’s a 10-minute walk through organic fields to the secluded pitch. Along the way, you’ll hopefully spot some of the local wildlife – from birds to rabbits, hares and deer – that will accompany your stay. The bell tent is tucked among trees and lush greenery, creating a private and peaceful setting. The smart, modern bathroom is cleverly housed in a refurbished horse trailer, where there’s also a private kitchen area and phone-charging points, so although the site is off-grid, you’ll still be within easy reach of home comforts. Outside, there’s a firepit and picnic table for cosy alfresco evenings; on clear nights watch the colourful sunsets and get ready for some serious stargazing – with very little light pollution in these parts, the sky comes alive after dark. For supplies and meals you don’t have to cook, there’s a shop, pub and takeaways in the village of Bottisham, less than 10 minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Those of you who love hiking will be pleased to note that there are numerous walking routes from the pitch, either along the River Cam or the local lodes (man-made waterways). National Trust-managed Wicken Fen Nature Reserve is also only 15 minutes’ away by car; there you can follow boardwalks through the wetlands to spot Highland cows and Konik ponies wandering freely. Cyclists will be pleased with their lot too. There are quiet routes on level roads to explore the lodes or link directly to Wicken Fen. Cambridge (40 minutes by bike) is a good bet for days of touring the historic colleges, admiring classical sculpture at The Fitzwilliam Museum or punting along the Cam. You can ingest a bit of local culture at Anglesey Abbey, Gardens and Lode Mill (five minutes’ drive), which has a priceless collection of paintings and decorative arts. Learn about the history of flight at IWM Duxford (half an hour), with its fascinating collection of planes from World War I bombers to a supersonic Concorde, or visit Ely (also half an hour) to see its soaring medieval cathedral and browse antique shops along the banks of the River Great Ouse.
