General

  • Quiet site on a working farm in the village of Horningsea
  • Five miles from Cambridge; easy trip by bike or public transport
  • A few minutes' walk from local pubs and fishing on the River Cam

Now here’s a place that’s really got that cracking country/city location right on the money… Gayton Farm is in the quiet village of Horningsea, surrounded by views out over Cambridgeshire fields and yet only five miles from the buzz of Cambridge city centre.

A peaceful spot it may be, but you’ll not be alone – the working farm’s home to a handsome herd of Lincoln Red cows, there are ponies next door and wilder guests (deer, owls and the like) can be spotted passing by regularly too. For a bit more company, it’s a 10-minute wander down to the village to sample the offerings of the two local pubs (one of which will even serve you up a tasty breakfast to be going on with) or treat yourself to a cake in the café.

A bike’s a bright idea around these parts – a 20-minute ride along the River Cam allows you to mingle with the clever college types down in Cambridge, or pedal off for a pint in a riverside pub. If you’re not so happy tottering on two wheels, it’s still pretty easy to get around, either by car (the A14’s just down the road) or using the local bus or train.

However you roam, you’ll be returning to a cosy glamping spot where a firepit awaits. Clean modern toilets and showers are part of the mix too.

Everything you could wish for in a glamping experience08/05/2023

Everything you could want and wish for was provided. Just turn up and enjoy the cosy luxury feel of these domes. Customer service and communication from booking to arrival was first class. The domes are so much more spacious inside than they appear outside. We had awful weather for our weekend but the domes were so well equipped, comfortable and cosy we didn’t mind. To sit in the dome sipping wine watching the thunder and lightning storm outside through the vast windows with the log burning going was special. The local pizza shop even delivered to the farm which was great as we had planned a bbq using the outdoor kitchen and entertaining area, but torrential rain stopped play. Highly recommend this site and these domes

We stayed in the gypsy caravan and it was even better than we thought it would be! The caravan is beautiful, it has its own private corner with own fire pit and picnic table, it looks out onto beautiful uninterrupted views of fields. The first morning we woke up to an incredible sunrise and there were deer walking through the field. The caravan has a log burner and it was so cosy. The owners are lovely, facilities are great. Would definitely come and stay again and highly recommend! Also only a 25 minute cycle into central Cambridge but in a nice quiet village, perfect location.

The geodome was very clean and well equipped. It had everything we and our dogs needed for a comfortable stay, all necessities and extras such as unlimited wood for the burner in the dome and outside firepit. The dome window and seating area (including firepit) had a lovely view over the farm. The farm is located in a quiet village that has two lovely pubs in easy walking distance, one is village owned. The village also has a garden centre that serves food all day and road connections are excellent being only a mile from the A14 and the M11. There are varied walks from the dome door, including riverside paths. Therer is no wifi on site but for me this was a benefit.

We loved our gypsy caravan. It was the perfect place for a relaxing weekend away. It was so snug with beautiful views from the bed. We brought our bikes and cycled to Waterbeach then down the towpath to Cambridge for the sights before going on to Grantchester for tea snd cake returning along the river again to chillout by the fire. We loved testing out our cooking on the open fire and managed dinner and breakfast. The washing and shower facilities were immaculate. Would definitely return.

Local attractions

A day trip to Cambridge is a mighty fine idea – mingle with some of the country’s brightest brains as you tour the gorgeous colleges, visit the museums (the arty collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle’s Yard are top picks) or get to grips with a punting pole to propel yourselves down the River Cam. It’s an easy 20-minute ride along the riverbank if you’re going by bike, or you can flag down a bus nearby.

Away from the city, there are plenty of attractions scattered nearby. Anglesey Abbey (10 minutes by car) has a whopping 98 acres of landscaped grounds to wander through, and another excellent stash of art; Wimpole Hall (25 minutes) is a similarly grand estate with the added bonus of cute farm animals. More recent history is on display at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (25 minutes), where you can get up close to Concorde and lots of other flying machines.

Keeping it very local, you can fish on the Cam a few minutes away, play golf or footgolf a couple of miles away. Horseback hacks and a wakeboarding park are about 15 minutes’ drive away.
