General
- Quiet site on a working farm in the village of Horningsea
- Five miles from Cambridge; easy trip by bike or public transport
- A few minutes' walk from local pubs and fishing on the River Cam
Now here’s a place that’s really got that cracking country/city location right on the money… Gayton Farm is in the quiet village of Horningsea, surrounded by views out over Cambridgeshire fields and yet only five miles from the buzz of Cambridge city centre.
A peaceful spot it may be, but you’ll not be alone – the working farm’s home to a handsome herd of Lincoln Red cows, there are ponies next door and wilder guests (deer, owls and the like) can be spotted passing by regularly too. For a bit more company, it’s a 10-minute wander down to the village to sample the offerings of the two local pubs (one of which will even serve you up a tasty breakfast to be going on with) or treat yourself to a cake in the café.
A bike’s a bright idea around these parts – a 20-minute ride along the River Cam allows you to mingle with the clever college types down in Cambridge, or pedal off for a pint in a riverside pub. If you’re not so happy tottering on two wheels, it’s still pretty easy to get around, either by car (the A14’s just down the road) or using the local bus or train.
However you roam, you’ll be returning to a cosy glamping spot where a firepit awaits. Clean modern toilets and showers are part of the mix too.

Local attractions
A day trip to Cambridge is a mighty fine idea – mingle with some of the country’s brightest brains as you tour the gorgeous colleges, visit the museums (the arty collections at the Fitzwilliam Museum and Kettle’s Yard are top picks) or get to grips with a punting pole to propel yourselves down the River Cam. It’s an easy 20-minute ride along the riverbank if you’re going by bike, or you can flag down a bus nearby.
Away from the city, there are plenty of attractions scattered nearby. Anglesey Abbey (10 minutes by car) has a whopping 98 acres of landscaped grounds to wander through, and another excellent stash of art; Wimpole Hall (25 minutes) is a similarly grand estate with the added bonus of cute farm animals. More recent history is on display at the Imperial War Museum Duxford (25 minutes), where you can get up close to Concorde and lots of other flying machines.
Keeping it very local, you can fish on the Cam a few minutes away, play golf or footgolf a couple of miles away. Horseback hacks and a wakeboarding park are about 15 minutes’ drive away.
