General

  • Back-to-basics site on a farm 10 minutes' drive from Kidderminster
  • West Midland Safari Park and Go Ape! within a 20-minute drive
  • A 10-minute walk from two riverside food pubs and miniature golf

Keen for a country escape close to Kidderminster? Castle Gate Campsite could be the place for you – wend your way to its Wolverley location to be 10 minutes’ drive from the centre of town, and well within reach of lots of ways to spend Worcestershire days.

This working farm site once had its own castle; it’s long gone now, but you’ll still see traces of the walls around the park, and be greeted by two grand gatehouses. With the fancy focal point no more, life proceeds at a rather more sedate and simple level: this is a rural back to basics place, where frills are limited to just a toilet and sink and where neighbours are mostly cattle and horses.

To fill up on fresh air, take a little trot around the park, following the trails and seeking out little sunny spots in the wooded areas. You may also want to consider barbecue based cookouts, or leave all the foodie prep to the pros by toddling off to one of the local pubs – there are two rather fine options down by the river, about a half-hour amble away. (If you opt for the Queens Head, take some time to peruse the pub’s team photos to see if you can spot a famed musician among the ranks.)

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 7 consecutive nights.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Dogs are not allowed during high season between 01/06 and 01/09.

Beautiful site / location and sheltered by trees - Rustic camping 5*21/09/2020

Beautiful site / location and sheltered by trees - this is rustic camping - which I love - just a portaloo a tap and seclusion - yet with great destinations within a reasonable walk. River Stour and canal are accessible from the bottom end of the site on foot. We walked to Wolverley and Kinver on the local foot path and towpath during our short stay - beautiful !! Arrived and pitched in a fab space - on a gentle slope - open plan camping - very spacious in september - people further down advised us how to walk on to the canal - very friendly :-)

    Disliked:

Policy on noise early or late in the day is clear on booking yet this seemed to be disregarded by some visitors - after all camping is all about getting away from it all - the last thing you want is inconsiderate neighbours either early or late !!! (Camper of 40 years experience)
A minor Quibble - howver this makes or breaks the experience :-)

    We will be back!!

This site is brilliant for back to basic camping needs. The atmosphere was lovely calm and peacful. The valley is beautiful. The camping field is well kept with a toilet on site which was always very clean and checked daily by the site owners.
Overall this is a very nice family run campsite. Owners are very friendly and checked up that everything was ok on a daily basis. There is plenty of space for the kids to play and dogs are allowed as long as they are kept on the lead. Camp fire are allowed in designated areas which is great for the chilly September monings and evenings.
Overall we had an amazing weekend.

Stayed for one night, was pretty close to wild camping and back to basics, can
Have a fire and has onsite porta loo and water tap.

Was allowed to select where I wanted to pitch which was Great. All in all good
    Camp for the price

    Disliked:

Litter left around from other campers but can't fault the site for this, we should all leave no trace when visiting sites and be responsible for leaving a clean pitch behind
    For other users.

Great campsite and friendly owners! Simple, cheap and quiet, just what I needed for a night.

It’s basically wild camping but with a portaloo and drinking water tap. So if your into that like me it’s perfect! Was able to light a campfire at one of the firepits.

Also able to drive my motorcycle down to the pitch too, bit steep in places but lots of flat ground to choose from.

    Disliked:

    Nothing, it was perfect.

The setting in the valley was lovely. Would highly recommend because of the gorgeous environment alone - the photo doesn't do it justice! The staff were really friendly and helpful, giving us a list of activities available nearby. Also, as two members couldn't arrive on the specified day, staff offered to amend prices accordingly without prompting. Great customer service!

    Disliked:

There was only one portaloo. Not ideal with quite a few campers there during our stay but, after flagging a rather unfortunate overflowing portaloo situation with staff, they quickly dealt with it and it was all sorted by the morning!

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up on the farm, head off to the Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve 20 minutes away, for walks through the woodland, meadows and orchards that make up the 549-hectare reserve. Tread quietly for glimpses of deer, butterflies and kingfishers; you can always save your yelling for a ride on the ziplines at the forest’s Go Ape! adventure park.

If farm life’s given the kids (or, ahem, you) a desire to get hands-on with the animals, take flight to Little Owl Farm Park (20 minutes’ drive), where they (or, ahem, you) can pet chicks and bunnies and make pals with the pigs. Best be keeping your hands to yourselves if you then head on to the West Midland Safari Park (15 minutes) – the beasts here are rather bigger and better viewed from a safe distance.

Holiday not complete without hitting a few balls about? Depending on your golfing prowess you may like to swing your way round the 18-hole course at Kidderminster Golf Club, or putt your way round the zany obstacles at the miniature golf course in Wolverley.

Train buffs will know Kidderminster as a place to join the steam powered Severn Valley Railway; it’s also home to the Museum of Carpet (a bit niche, this one, but with high praise from past visitors).

Must see

  • Dudley Zoological Gardens (9.5 miles)
  • Avoncroft Museum of Historic Buildings (9.5 miles)
  • Witley Court & Gardens (English Heritage) (10.0 miles)

National Trust

  • Kinver Edge and the Rock Houses (2.7 miles)
  • Rosedene (6.6 miles)
