  • Modern, adults-only shepherdā€™s hut with views of Kenilworth Castle
  • Coventry 20 minutesā€™ drive; Stratford-upon-Avon half an hour
  • Well-equipped kitchen; tea-making essentials and barbecue supplied
Adults-only glamping in a modern and airy shepherdā€™s hut with atmospheric views of a ruined medieval castle? If thereā€™s ever been a case for saying ā€˜Please, take my moneyā€™, this might well be it. Grounds Farm sits on the outskirts of Kenilworth town (five minutesā€™ drive), surrounded by the glorious countryside of Warwickshire. Itā€™s all about cosying up to your loved one in this self-contained Shaker-style hut, which is equipped with all ā€“ or at least most things ā€“ you might need, starting with the comfortable double bed, set in an alcove for additional intimacy vibes. Thereā€™s a light-filled ensuite shower room with a flushable toilet (and a large mirror), and both bed linen and towels are provided, so you wonā€™t have to lug half the airing cupboard on holiday with you. The first brew when you get to your destination is always the sweetest, and the hut comes with a kettle (and all tea-making essentials: tea, coffee, sugar and milk), plus toaster, microwave and fridge. In addition, thereā€™s a gas barbecue out on the lawn, where your meals will be accompanied by the hoots of the resident owls and views of Kenilworth Castle. (Fun fact: the farm was once part of the castle, and even today you might stumble across the occasional artefact from the English Civil War.) If you donā€™t fancy slaving over a stove or a barbecue, there is no shortage of dining establishments (and pubs) in town. Whatever you opt for at meal times, you can work it all off on a hike around local nature reserves such as Crackley Woods and Tocil (both 10 minutes).

Local attractions

Thereā€™s more to Kenilworth Castle than its dramatic ruins. The recreated Elizabethan Garden is a pleasant place for a leisurely stroll among colourful, fragrant blooms, with highlights including an elegant aviary and a marble fountain. For a fortress in a less ruinous state, head to Warwick Castle (20 minutes), overlooking the River Avon. In addition to its famed cathedral (comprising a modern church next to the remains of the one destroyed during World War II), Coventry (20 minutes) is home to the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, with archaeology and visual arts collections, and the Midland Air Museum. Stratford-upon-Avon (half an hour) is an obligatory destination for anyone whoā€™s into literature and the theatre. Stratford honours its most famous offspring in multiple ways: you can visit Shakespeareā€™s Birthplace, a half-timbered cottage now housing period items; have a look at the Bardā€™s wife Anna Hathawayā€™s Cottage; and catch a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Such a beautiful weekend! We had the most relaxing few days away at this hut and Iā€™m struggling to find a fault, we came down on the train as we donā€™t drive and this didnā€™t cause issues as everywhere was walkable and taxis are available to the site. We explored the kenilworth castle and had lovely food in the town. Owner gave us a warm welcome and said hello which is just what you want!! The hut offered tea coffee and sugar and milk with some treats added. Everywhere was spotless. Bbq and log fire supplied and seating. Kitchen had all the supplies that you needed! We didnā€™t want to leave! And had the best stay which was just what we needed before university starts up again. Thankyou so much!

Disliked: The only dislike I can think about is the insects but this never caused any issues, we went on a hot weekend so itā€™s to be expected!
