  • Self-contained glamping site on a farm in Ettington
  • A 15-minute drive from Stratford-upon-Avon
  • Private space with barbecue, hammock, and indoor kitchen and bathroom
A secluded, self-contained glamping area on a small farm – Rookery Retreat is a place for those who hanker after a slice of rural life. There’s no need to cart heaps of kit with you, for all is set up ready and waiting at your temporary domain, on the edge of a working cattle farm and livery in the village of Ettington. From here it’s a short leisurely stroll to the local pub and shop (where you can pick up daily supplies of freshly baked bread and other goodies) or to nearby walking trails. If you’d like to venture further afield, Stratford-upon-Avon is 15 minutes away, and the site is less than half an hour from the Cotswolds. Accommodation is in a cosy shepherd's hut kitted out with a kingsize bed, a sofa and a woodburning stove. A few steps away is the woodman’s hut with all amenities: a small kitchen and a bathroom with electric shower and eco toilet. All this is surrounded by your own personal outdoor area, with a gas barbecue, chiminea and a selection of spots in which to relax. (Which to go for first? The deckchairs, the bench or the hammock – oh, the dilemma.) It’s all fenced off too, so once the gate is closed any dogs you’ve brought along for the ride are welcome to dash about freely.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Loved the whole place! Beautiful space, beautiful shepherds hut, the facilities provided were really good and it was quiet. Lovely to be able to walk around the village and to the village pub. The homemade biscuits were also a treat!

Disliked: Absolutely nothing to dislike! The only issue we had was it rained the majority of the time so we will definitely have to come back when the weather is better to really make the most of the outside space provided

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Quiet, spacious, warming space. Lovely for a quick get away in a small village. Close attractions such as Diddily Squat farm, caffeine and machine, and Shakespeares town. The added extras makes the trip very easy… included bedding, towels, logs (for heating), battery power, shower, toilet, foil, utensils. Ect. Located on a working farm, and neighbours to a little donkey and Shetland pony. Who are very friendly and love a fuss.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Me and my boyfriend stayed here for 2 nights and absolutely loved it. It had everything you could need! The bed was sooo comfortable and the hut with the shower and toilet along with little kitchen was so good. Couldn’t fault it and Hayley the host was so helpful. The little touches of flapjacks, biscuits and milk was lovely. The donkey and the little pony next door was lovely. The local pub the chequers inn was amazing.

Disliked: The toilet was a little hard to get used to.

Liked: Amazing find. It was so great staying in the shepherds hut and having our own little private area to relax in. Within this area there were a lot of ammenities that meant we had everything we needed to enjoy our time there. The owner was lovely and very accomodating. The dog had a great time too, loved it.

Local attractions

Head to Stratford-upon-Avon 15 minutes away by car to follow in the footsteps of the town’s most famed son – there’s all manner of Shakespeare-related attractions over here, including the Shakespeare’s Birthplace museum, Anne Hathaway’s Cottage, Mary Arden’s Farm and shows at the Royal Shakespeare Company theatre. Leaving the Bard behind, drive a few minutes further north (around 20 from the farm) to gawp at gorgeous Warwick Castle, wander around Charlecote Park or see the huge collection of vintage cars at the British Motor Museum. You may be able to catch a meet at Warwick Racecourse; if not, try your luck betting on the sheep races at Hatton Country World (also home to lots of other animals and activities). There are lots of local walks to be had, but you may also like to stretch your legs a little more wandering through the Cotswolds, half an hour away. Stow-on-the-Wold, Bourton-on-the-Water and Moreton-in-Marsh are some of the top spots for a scenic stroll.
