  • Well-maintained level pitches with views over Cannock Chase
  • A 15-minute drive from Shugborough Hall; 20 minutes from Stafford
  • Two coarse fishing pools on site with accessible pegs
Fishing meets fab views at this site in the Staffordshire countryside, 20 minutes’ drive from Stafford. The fishing part of the equation at Carney Pools Camping and Caravanning comes from the setting next to two coarse fishing pools known as Carney Pools, which have fishing for all ages and abilities (including wheelchair-accessible pegs) at a pretty 12-acre site. And the views? Those come from a location that looks out over the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Pitches are set up in a level seven-acre field that’s sheltered by a well-established hedge and has access to two showers and toilet facilities (separate ladies’ and gents’ toilets plus accessible facilities). Dogs are welcome as long as they’re kept on a lead and cleaned up after. Dogs aren’t allowed around the fishing pools until after the fishery closes for the day. There's a bar on site, which is open on busy weekends only. For a break from fishing there are plenty of riverside and canalside strolls nearby, along with walks in Cannock Chase and other outings to the likes of a National Trust estate, a farm park or the atmospheric National Memorial Arboretum. To sort food and other essentials, it’s a journey of just under a mile to Wolseley Bridge where there’s a shop, pub, garden centre and Indian restaurant (which will also do deliveries if you’re in the mood to flop out on site). The folk here also recommend a trip to the farm shop three miles away to pick up bits for a picnic or barbecue back at base. On bank holidays and special occasions, the site tends to put up a marquee with live entertainment.

Muscovy camping pod (deluxe, two person)

Liked: The pod. The facilities and cleanliness of the pod.

Disliked: The lack of basics in the pod - why give a chopping board and no knife or tea cups and a kettle but no tea spoon? The shower costing a pound for 5mins even when paying for pod stays

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Good location, nice staff, good cafe serving bacon sandwiches etc. shower cubicles and toilets are nice and clean.

Disliked: Nothing really. £1 for 5 minutes in the shower was okay for me. Stops folk hogging it and was plenty of time. We had a fire pit that was £20 per night with logs. Tbh I thought this was extremely expensive. We’ve stayed all over the country and that’s by far the most we’ve paid per night for a fire pit and logs. But, clutching at straws was good over all.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely vibrant site with great entertainment. You can be part of the more lively crowd or choose the more quiet overflow field. Clean children’s playground with lots for them to play on. It was lovely to see kids running around playing games.

Disliked: My only small gripe is not enough water taps. Some at the top of the field are needed.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Loved the park my little one and his cousins had a great afternoon/morning playing. And the lake was beautiful to walk around.

Disliked: Unclear where bins are. Very rowdy neighbours howling after 10 pm in the evening when kids are asleep & would have loved a little shop to buy logs etc to be open a bit later as we ran out around 9pm and no option to get any or some lockers with some included.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lovely play area for the children. It really does help keep them busy. My God Daughters were able to make friends on site similar to their ages. Shower block, good overall kept clean, but desperately needs scent air fresheners near toilets and sinks. Unpleasant smells at different times. Local food hall near by 2.3 miles. Handy if you forgot something. Lovely grounds to explore on the site.

Disliked: Paying a £1 coin, each time to take a shower, I don't think this should be a separate fee with electrical pitches. We were a family of 4, and we shower day and night as that's our hygiene routine. The extra £16 we paid in showers was unfair in my opinion. We only stayed a extra day due to the kids enjoying themselves and the weather, turning for the worst in the morning that was poor before, it changed for the better. I think the shower fees need to be reviewed. Also the post code difference on Pitch up doesn't help. We ended up elsewhere but close. When we eventually found it, was advised correct post code on website. Phone signal a bit hit and miss.

Local attractions

Rural break not complete without spotting some animals out in the open? Try your luck on the trails around the Staffordshire Wildlife Trust’s Wolseley Centre (five minutes’ drive) or head to Amerton Farm (15 minutes) to feed lambs, groom horses and see chicks hatching (or let off some steam at the indoor and outdoor play areas…) For more of those peaceful country rambles, spend a thoughtful day at the National Memorial Arboretum or see if you can catch one of the opening dates at Mitton Manor Gardens for some splendid topiary, water features and sculptures. Both are 25 minutes away. Can’t resist the chance to poke about in a palatial country house? Nip over to the National Trust estate at Shugborough Hall or get your imagination going at the remains of Chartley Castle; both can be reached with a 15-minute drive. If that’s all a tad sedate, you may find the thrills of Hednesford Hills Raceway (25 minutes) more to your liking.
