  • Rural Staffordshire pop-up site between Stafford, Stone and Uttoxeter
  • Cannock Chase walks and Alton Towers within a half-hour drive
  • Simple, gently sloping pitches on a 12-acre plot with country views
Set off to the Staffordshire countryside and a spot that’s peacefully rural but also strategically set within easy reach of a trio of towns to make shopping, eating out and finding attractions nice and straightforward. Fradswell Meadow Campsite is in the little village of Fradswell, pretty much at the centre point of the triangle formed by Stafford, Stone and Uttoxeter. It’s a handy spot for all sorts of activities, from getting out for leisurely country walks and bike rides to spending the day screaming your way along all the rides at Alton Towers. In between are such things as animal parks, cinemas, a pottery museum and plenty of country pubs. The pitches at Fradswell Meadow are set in a 12-acre space with gentle slopes, lots of trees for shade and lovely views out over the surrounding Staffordshire countryside. The owners picked this spot because it’s a favourite of the dairy cows that graze here in spring and early summer – and no doubt it’ll prove popular with human visitors as well (and dogs are allowed too, although they’ll need to be kept on leads and under control at all times because of the livestock). Staying at this pop-up campsite is all about spending time in nature, say the owners, so they’ve left the place as untouched as possible, simply adding portable toilets for guest use (but please note there are no showers). Barbecues and campfires are allowed here, and you can buy wood and fuel on site. A local lady may be able to provide you with home-baked bread, rolls, croissants, pains aux chocolat or cupcakes with 24 hours' notice (ask the site team for more information).

Local attractions

Need to stretch your legs? You can set off for a walk directly from the site, or head a little further afield to scenic spots like Doxey Marshes (20 minutes’ drive) or the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (25 minutes). All these countryside areas may well reward you with some bird or animal spottings, but to be sure of such things you’ll need to plan a trip to one of the local animal attractions – perhaps Gentleshaw Wildlife Centre (25 minutes), Trentham Monkey Forest (25 minutes) or Peak Wildlife Park (35 minutes). To meet more domesticated animals, try Amerton Farm (10 minutes), which has a play barn as well as activities like horse grooming and lamb feeding. If you need something a little more urban, head to Uttoxeter (15 minutes) for a cinema and ice rink, Stafford (20 minutes) for the castle or Stoke-on-Trent (20 minutes) for the Gladstone Pottery Museum. And of course if it’s high-octane action you’re after, plan a day at Alton Towers (half an hour).

Disliked: So much cow poo just every where and the toilets really need more care to be cleaned throughout people’s stay

From the manager: Thank you for your review Emma, and your kind words about me personally. I'm sorry you won't be returning again however I would like to point out that we did mention in our introduction profile that the field had been grazed throughout the spring and very early summer so visitors were aware and could experience the field in its natural state. I hope we shall see you again and I hope Elliot enjoyed his flask of tea 😊

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Fradswell Meadow was a wonderful campsite and James was a fantastic host. An idyllic country location with lovely walks and paddleboarding nearby, and James brings delicious baked goods and the best firewood around if ordered. A simple campsite, which is what we love, but everything that was offered by very well maintained. We hope James will continue with his venture as we'd love to come back and stay.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Space, simplicity, wildness, peace and quiet, campfire. Could choose where to pitch up - had a great flat spot so one of the best sleeps I’ve had in a tent. We were 3 adults, 6 children (9+ years) - the children had space to run and play freely but safely. James was a great host too!

Disliked: A minor observation but the meadow was totally unmown - when it rained we were all soaked walking to the portaloos in the long grass. Perhaps a few path ways could be mown in the grass whilst keeping the rest of the field as natural as possible? Please also sow some wildflowers - it would be an absolute joy to camp in a meadow like this.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks Suzanne :-) it was lovely to see your family enjoying themselves. Your point about the pathways is a good idea, and something I'll certainly take on board! the wildflowers is in my vision for this site (thinking of planting them on the bank where people don't pitch) but i wanted to see if there was a market for our site before committing so anything permanent. We also plan on offering more bakery goodies as these have been a great success :-D look forward to seeing you again in the future

Will definitely come again.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The peace and quiet. Having water on site. Toilets on site. Walks around the area. Dog friendly site. All dogs on leads. Eggs and fire wood available to order in advance. Fire pit and BBQ you can bring yourself.

Disliked: Would have liked the bottom walk gateway cut back so it was easier to pass through for another walk.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review Sharon it was lovely to meet you both. My apologies for the gateway, i saw that a few other campers had walked through there so i assumed it was passable, however i shall look to check it more often in future. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and I look forward to seeing you both again :-)

Liked: The surroundings were lovely and the site excellent. Basic toilet facilities are available alongside fresh water. Firewood and refreshments are also offered by the site, to order. James the owner, I found to be a very nice young fellow, being very friendly and very helpful. We had recently bought a camper and wanted a site close to home to test the van, but we will certainly be returning back to Fradswell.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike
