  • No-frills bike-friendly site on 10 acres of Forestry Commission land
  • In Cannock Chase, a 10-minute drive from Rugeley and the A51
  • Access to popular mountain bike paths, including Follow the Dog trail
Woods, wild terrain and some of the finest mountain biking trails in the Midlands – access to all of the above is to be had from Tackeroo Caravan Site in the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This Staffordshire park, set on Forestry Commission land, has pitches spread among the tall pine, spruce and evergreen trees. It’s got a wild feel – there are no showers, toilets or facilities in general, save for some rubbish bins and a waste disposal point to empty chemical toilets (which you’re required to bring if you want to stay here). Taps are on hand for filling up your water tank and bottle. It’s definitely worth lugging a mountain bike along on a trip to Tackeroo, which sits alongside the famed Follow The Dog trail, the Midlands’ first – and arguably still the best – dedicated mountain bike path. Outside peak camping season, the site hosts popular cycling-themed events and the area is a general hub for all things riding (head south for the Monkey Trail or north to explore Cannock Chase Country Park). It’s also around a mile or so to Birches Valley Forest Visitor Centre, a prime place to grab some tourist info brochures, get your bearings and make a plan for exploring the area. There’s a GoApe! activity centre, a Gruffalo nature trail for families and a decent little café as well. Oh, and more mountain biking trails of course…

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked I was pleasantly surprised with the site. Me and my lads only had a 1 night stay but it was still good. Went a trek through the woods also with head torches and the trail was nice a clear. Site itself was busy but everyone was respectful. We will come again. I also had a few question and spoke with Adam. He answered all of my question and was very helpful. Thanks Adam and thanks Tackeroo👍

Disliked Nothing to dislike.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Pitch where you like
Beautiful trees and grass
Very quiet
Pitch black at night
Very private
Totally minimal and off grid style camping. Single amenity - water point and waste drain.
Fresh blackberries at the nearest bush!
Immediate access to Cannock cycling trails - Follow the Dog goes past the campsite.

Disliked Bit of noise in the evening from cars / motorbikes racing round the forest roads, but not too bad.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Beautiful site with the most scenic surroundings. Grass was cut well and looked after and there are a few facilities spotted around including drinking tap water, bins and disposal sinks.

In a lovely location with shops 10 mins away and lots of trails for walks and dogs.
Owners came round to check the site and were really polite and helpful.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Stayed for a night with my 2 kids in a tent. Plenty of room, fresh water and a waste disposal and that’s it! Perfect! Dead quiet except for the deer and the birds. Absolutely great spot right in the woods and right on the mountain bike trails. We had a great time 👍

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Beautiful setting and very peaceful.

Disliked For somebody who does not know the area at all, it was very confusing to try to find a pub on our bicycles. There was no signal there to use and the pub telephone number was wrong so we couldn't phone the pub. We passed several other people who were also lost - families etc. It mentioned that the wardens would be around to help but there was nobody in sight and we were directed to the information cabin which we could not find also. It was only once we were on the main road at the bottom of the site that we saw a sign for this. It is such a shame as the woods were beautiful. Although it is a gated entrance with a lock it is clear that people can easily drive around the gate and have been doing so.

Non-electric hardstanding and grass pitch

Liked Very lovely site, clean and very friendly staff. Will definitely come back, very understanding with us entering late,

Disliked A mountain bike club situated right in front of our motorhome which was very unsettling as they were racing round the camp and the lady in charge of them was constantly shouting which was unnecessary, the elderly gentleman who was with her was very considerate and kept his voice low and the team could still hear him.

Local attractions

Once you’ve ridden around all the area’s excellent mountain biking trails several times, keep the adrenaline pumping while suspended high above the forest canopy at Go Ape Cannock (five minutes’ drive), an activity centre with almost 1,500 metres of tree-to-tree crossings. Less energetic dawdles in the area include dog-walking and orienteering trails. Other gentle ways to while away a day include wanders by the water at Fairoak Pools (five minutes) or fly fishing on the banks of Blithfield Reservoir (15 minutes). Amateur historians could amble around Castle Ring, an Iron Age site (15 minutes), while shoppers might prefer to dip in and out of the boutiques of Rugeley market town (10 minutes). If stately homes appeal, navigate your way to the National Trust’s Shugborough Estate (15 minutes), a huge Georgian building with a walled garden. Into flexing your creativity? Check out Ingestre Hall, a Grade II-listed 17th-century Jacobean mansion and the UK’s only dedicated Residential Arts Centre (20 minutes).
