  • Off-grid, peaceful Shropshire woodland site within a Forest School
  • A 20-minute drive to Telford and 30 minutes away from Shrewsbury
  • Well-equipped kitchen, eco-friendly amenities, firepits and barbecues
Fancy swapping the sound of your smartphone pinging for the noise of birdsong? Then book in a trip at Wrekin Forest Events Camping, an off-grid site with a back to basics feel in lush Shropshire surrounds. This peaceful place also comes with handy essentials to help amp up a weekend in the woods, from fairy lights and festoon lamps to a barbecue, firepits and a well-equipped kitchen (although please note there's no fridge or freezer due to the off-grid nature of the site). While a stay at this park’s all about getting lost in the forest (bring your pup along to help you sniff your way back...) or letting the kids loose on the large playing field (with swings, sandpit, football net, badminton and table tennis), ace activities and attractions are all around too. It’s a 20-minute drive to Telford from here for the landmark Iron Bridge as well as a kids’ park with heritage trails and an aerial rope course. If educational times for the small fry are what you’re after, it's handy to note that the site is set in a Forest School with activities like archery, air rifle shooting, open-fire cooking and den building available, and outdoorsy courses available for primary school pupils. It's 25 minutes from the Museum of the Gorge as well, one of 10 around town giving a glimpse at the history of the Industrial Revolution in this area where it all began. (If even more poking into the past appeals, Blists Hill Victorian Town is around the same distance with its recreated 19th-century village and staff dressed up in fancy period clothes… and should be a hit with those primary-aged pupils too.) To nosey in nature instead, The Wrekin is a 25-minute drive from the park: putter to the hillfort’s 1,335-foot top and check out views over 17 of England’s counties or have picnics at the peak. And if you’d prefer to just hang out at your new home from home, plenty of space is available for outdoor games like croquet, swing ball and Jenga (all available to hire from the owners).

Dormouse House rental tent (four person)

Liked: We stayed as a family with two children and a young puppy. The children absolutely loved the forest school site and the little park onsite. The fire pit and wood was a lovely touch and the tent was well equipped, as was the kitchen and toilet facilities!

Disliked: We didn’t like how close our tent was to the pod next door, the pitch was big but felt as if we had no privacy as our seating areas were close to theirs. We solved this by moving the chairs and fire pit round the side of our tent. We also didn’t get our email containing all the information until 11pm on the night of our stay, and because of the lack of signal we didn’t actually get it until we got home the next day.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We are glad that overall you and your children enjoyed your stay. Yoiu stayed at a tricky time with all the flooding, so it is good that you were able to access everything you needed. Space.....unfortunately there is no intension to change the size or position of this pitch at this time. As you say it is large, you will have noticed the new willow hedge planting all around this pitch, this willow grows quickly, so hopefully will offer some privacy in the future. Most of the time on our site children and adults often end up talking and playing together. It is all about perspective of size and privacy I guess. Customer service.....you stayed for one night and to be fair you did not see me, but you saw my partner around on site. You booked at 12.30pm the day before your arrival, I work very long days and on this occasion I worked part of my day off-site in a school. It is often the case that paperwork is done late into the night, this includes sending emails. If you book last minute, you do risk not getting all the additional, non essential, but useful information early, but iut did get to you before you left home. Wifi...we pride ourself in being off-grid. Thank you once again, Judie & Anthony

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Really good facilities. Clean and comfortable. We only stayed one night with our 5 year old son. On arrival Judie welcomed us, she was ever so lovely. Unfortunately it had rained so much over the past few weeks the surrounding areas had flooded but they had worked so hard to get the site as safe as possible. Really great stay would recommend if you have young kids, had a good kitchen set up too to wash your stuff afterwards, and if you have forgotten anything they had absolutely everything you would need. Had a wonderful stay and would recommend. No wifi and not much signal but thats what you have as a wild camping experience, so nice to be with nature and we say plenty.

Disliked: Nothing couldnt find anything negative to say about the place.

Rabbit Warren non-electric grass and earth tent pitch (family)

Liked: We came to Wreken Forest with our 3 year old twins and elderly dog. And it was fabulous. The site is so well equipped with everything from. Pots and pans, to games for the kids. The owners have done a great job thinking of everything. As it was end of season we had a choice of a couple of spots to camp as well which was really nice for us. We will be back again that's for sure.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review us. So glad you had a lovely time and truly hope you will return next season. The twins were lovely and maybe they would enjoy a family fun weekend on the bank holidays. They are a lot of fun! Judie & Anthony

Dormouse House rental tent (four person)

Liked: We have stayed a few times previously. The pitch was big. Everything you need in the tent. The forest school is great for kids. Nice selection of toys for kids to use.

Disliked: some other campers were a little loud til late. However, the owners of the campsite responded promptly and efficiently.

From the manager: Thank you for your review, so sorry you were disturbed, it's so hard to keep noise from travelling through canvas, we always try really hard to emphasise that we are a quiet site, family friendly with an 11pm curfew. We are so glad you still enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you again next season. J&A

Owls Nest shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful site. Owners Judie and Anthony are really nice and so helpful and friendly, nothing was to much trouble. Site has small amount of people staying on a large forest area and nice and quiet. lots of activities like forst school, park and games for the children to do. Stayed in the Shepards hut and it was spotlessly clean with lots of things included like bedding , towels, camp fire including logs and bbq. Will definitely be back next year.

Disliked: Nothing it exceeded expectations for off grid.

Local attractions

In Shropshire with the intent of shuffling about in the lush landscape? Drive to Ironbridge first off (half an hour away) and steel yourself for a 139-mile stroll on the Shropshire Way. Alternatively, if that sounds a little lengthy for your liking, Much Wenlock is around the same distance and leads to the 19-mile limestone ridge of Wenlock Edge (and fun fact: it was formerly a tropical coral reef aeons ago when this area was under the sea). If this gets you craving some water-based whiling, take a stroll over to a Much Wenlock activity centre for canoeing, kayaking and rafting on the River Severn, plus quad biking and clay pigeon shooting on land. Boldings Pools (30 minutes) meanwhile is your go-to if angling for carp, bream and roach sounds like a grand day out...
