The Royal Oak Campsite: A view of the grassy pitches

General

  • Dog-friendly grassy pitches behind a country pub in Shropshire
  • A 15-minute drive from Wyre Forest, Severn Valley Railway and Bewdley
  • Food and real ales served with indoor or outdoor seating; walks nearby

Pub grub, real ales and countryside walks… at The Royal Oak Campsite, you’ll be making base at a country pub in Shropshire in the little, characterful village of Alveley, 15 minutes’ drive away from Wyre Forest, the Severn Valley Railway and the West Midland Safari Park. With grassy dog-friendly pitches, this is quite the merry base to be had within reach of these particular attractions' steam train trips, treetop courses or animals.

One of the highlights here has got to be the pub itself. Built in the 1800s and added to over the years, today, it has a great food menu with real ales available so that you can wash your meal down. You’ll be able to eat indoors or outdoors, depending on what you feel like.

Dogs are allowed to accompany you on your trip here, as long as they’re kept on leads at all times. But whether you’ve got a canine companion or not, there are lots of local walks you can take, including a trail to the river at Arley (a little over an hour’s walk away).

The pitches have 24-hour access to toilets and showers, so the basics are covered. Barbecues also have the go-ahead, so if you’re looking to piece together the works, the nearest food shop is only around the corner (five minutes’ walk away).

Friendly owner, great facilities and pub on site08/12/2021

The owner of the site was very nice and helpful, lending us a hookup extension when ours wasn't long enough and happily explaining the site to us on arrival. We had a scary situation where we had to call an ambulance in the night for our baby and the owner was right there making sure we had what we needed to get out quickly, and after a quick hospital visit (baby all fine in the end) we were back at the sight in the morning for a nice lie-in. Enjoyed our short stay and would visit again when back in the area!

Location good for West Mids Safari Park, clean toilets and showers. Good size showers with space for changing and clothes hooks.

    Disliked:

Showers a bit cooler, but expected this time of year. Dont drive across grass if wet, neighbours got stuck and had to be towed out. On a main road so slightly noisy.

The Campsite is on the edge of a nice village with good walks and three pub, a shop and a couple of take aways.
The facilities are basic but ok.
The pub is ok and has great beer.
We did not eat there but they do serve food and the landlord was welcoming.
The site is level, the grass was quite soggy in places so we stayed on the gravel so not a problem

    Disliked:

The elsan point is in the same room as the washing up
The road is a bit noisy which is not a problem in a camper van but would be in a tent.

Lovely and peaceful, nice pub food. Lovely surrounding views. Locals very friendly and welcoming.

    Disliked:

No gravel drive through road or parking next to tents for cars, so very wet and muddy, cars got stuck on the grass.
Local shop closed very early. Major road closed, so if you don’t know the area it’s a lot of travelling in lanes (no fault of the camp site).
