Great Family Holidays Since 1974: the Shingler family welcomes you to Lower Lacon Caravan Park
Play area by orange area and top field
Children can play for hours and make lots of new friends
Play park by one of the camping fields

  • Family site one mile from the market town of Wem
  • Within 25 minutes' drive of Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch
  • Two play areas, crazy golf and a supermarket with off-licence on site
Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

Pitches are generally spacious and well-maintained, and staff are frequently praised for their friendliness and helpfulness. While many guests appreciate the cleanliness of facilities, some found them dated or experienced issues with noise, particularly during peak times. Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked Lots to do on the site - swimming pool - crazy golf - play areas for the kids- goats alpacas sheep.
Nice hot water in showers. The wardens were lovely- very helpful. Really spacious pitches

Disliked Didn't like the field we were in (Green) - bit far away from main areas - walk through the woods for the toilet - to empty cassette which is ok in the day time- pitch black at night - could do with more singage around the site - for first timers especially- ok when you have been a few times -the site map they gave was out of focus couldn't see what half the stuff was.
The showers - no where to put anything where it didn't get wet - one small hook on back of door.

Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked Upon arrival instantly there was a good atmosphere, staff were very friendly in reception and to the person who showed us our pitch. We’ve been here a few times before and was our first choice on deciding where to go. There’s loads of things to do on site such as seeing animals to having a boogie in the barn also a decent sized pool and a general stroll with the dog’s 🐶

Disliked Unfortunately the only downside to our recent visit on the pitch we were on we struggled pegging the tent down as there must of been a big concrete slab underneath 9/10 a peg would not go in which caused some frustration. Other than that everything else was spot on.

Electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Pitch space is more than adequate. We camped in dog free zone in orange section. The park was great for the kids and the pool. Although water appeared murky most days. Suitable takeaway on site, not overly expensive same for the shop onsite.

Disliked Toilets! Absolutely disgusting!! Through no fault of the site, how people thinks it’s acceptable to leave toilets is beyond me. Site was too busy for our liking, music being played loudly until after midnight most evenings. Portable showers are not cleaned thoroughly. Parents allow kids to poop in them and it flows through to all showers. Someone took our pitch space which caused further confusion for the family arriving on the Friday. It felt like the attendant was going to ask us to move even though we’d been pitched for 4 days.

Would give it at 3.5 out of 5 stars but wouldn’t return.

Non-electric grass pitch (large)

Liked We enjoyed our stay .. well organised on arrival and staff where great and helpful, the tent pitches were big, lots to do for children on site including 2 parks, animals, kids entertainment (only on some nights), outdoor swimming pool (which is we also well organised). And also things to do for children near by.. We visited the ironworks museum and hoo zoo. Both great days out and around half an hour drive away.

Disliked Toilets are dated I’d would have said unclean but there was always cleaners in cleaning them, grass wasn’t the best for pegs and I would be careful driving on the grass as I seen lots of pegs and screws left when walking to the toilet, there was a few loud families (swearing and there was even a scuffle between 2 families) but this can’t be helped by the campsite and it never kept us awake. They did keep all of us together on a huge field which I didn’t see the point in but again didn’t keep us awake, pool wasn’t the cleanest and the food at the cafe was awful.

Liked We LOVED this camp site, the whole park was keep clean and tidy.
The play parks were great as was the kids entertainment.
The shop had a good variety of different stuff.

Electric grass pitch (XL)

Liked Large.
Good play areas for kiddies.
Never seen so many children, plenty to make friends.
Decent little site shop.
Wardens patrolling and polite, they seemed good with the kids.

Disliked Very dated facilities appear dirty and unkept.

The additional trailer facilities were cleanest but had ques. And ran out of toilet paper on occasions.

Very large site looking run down, largely due to the permanent pitched caravans which many of look scruffy.

Looked at the pool but didn't book, appeared small for size of site and not the cleanest surroundings.

Overflowing bins added to the wasp issue they seem to have. And bad smell.

Overgrown hedging and brambles lots of nettles so kiddies have to be careful.

Large family field was like a set of Shameless.....not our vibe.
Lucky we were pitched elsewhere.

Good luck relaxing if your on the family field on a busy weekend.

Electric grass pitch (large, no pets)

Liked Pitches were well kept. Plenty of toilets and showers. Well stocked shop. Pool system worked well.

Disliked Orange field is a treak to washing up and CD facilities could do with a disposal option so when washing up in the tent you can dispose of the water. Pool was so cold not really heated.

Local attractions

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
