Opened by the Shingler family in 1974, Lower Lacon Caravan Park is just a mile from the stunning market town of Wem in north Shropshire. With train and bus services in Wem being within walking distance, the site has easy access to plenty of local attractions, including Shrewsbury, Ellesmere and Whitchurch (which are all within 25 minutes' drive of the site if you'd rather take your own transport). The site has a very convenient and secure set-up, with a barrier system, 24-hour emergency cover and a warden and owners living on site. There are two play areas on site, as well as crazy golf and a heated outdoor swimming pool with a toddler's paddling pool (please take note that the pools are only open during high season for pre-booked sessions only, and weather dependent). For extra entertainment, the J.A.K.K.S. Barn (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) has a bar and occasional family discos. When you're hungry, pick up snacks at the on-site supermarket, which also has an off-licence. The J.A.K.K.S. café and takeaway (open on weekends during low season and closed during winter) are on hand for further refreshments. By the pool, there's the choice of CJ's Snack Bar (weather dependent) and the adults-only Windmill Lounge Bar (only open during high season or on weekends during low season and winter), which has a marquee. Lower Lacon Caravan Park has a pretty cool backstory, having started as the back entrance for the Aston Park American Army Camp, a munitions and distribution depot built in World War II (on land purchased from owner Clive's paternal grandfather). During its development, a D8 bulldozer sank in the soil, so the land was covered with three feet of solid materials from local foundries; this can make placing pegs difficult but it also means that the team have never had to turn away any customers due to bad weather as the pitches stay firm.

Syntes om Site was pretty clean. Toilets were always clean. Lots of play areas. Polite staff.

Syntes ikke om Some people were noisy until midnight. Drunken noise!

Only one washing up area which was quite far away from our pitch.

Lovely site but not truly dog-friendly, which was disappointing.

Syntes om The site is clean, spacious, and well-run, with friendly staff and great facilities. The outdoor pool, shop, and evening entertainment were ideal for families, and there’s plenty for kids to enjoy. Pitches are generous and well-spaced, and it’s perfectly located for exploring Shrewsbury and the countryside.

Syntes ikke om The only real downside for us — and it was quite a significant one — was the lack of dog access to both on-site bars. While we understand some restrictions, it became more of an issue when we found we couldn’t even order food at Jakks Barn to eat outside, reportedly due to takeaway items going missing. This left us with no choice but to take food back to the van.

It was disappointing, especially as our dogs are very well-behaved, and in the 49 sites we've stayed at previously, dogs have always been welcomed indoors. The site is advertised as dog-friendly, but in reality, it didn’t feel that way. We couldn’t enjoy the entertainment on Saturday night unless we left the dogs behind — which isn't something we’re comfortable doing.

We travel most weekends and had hoped this would become a regular stop for us, but unfortunately, we’ll likely look elsewhere in future — there are plenty of great sites that are genuinely dog-friendly.

Syntes om ✅ Beautiful location. Surrounded by country side.
✅Pool - free - pre book - clean, tidy, well organised, food and drink available at a good price.
✅Crazy Golf - free - £2 each deposit(given back when return the golf club)
✅Jakks Club house - check online for opening times as different throughout the year. Brilliant entertainment, karaoke, music - average priced food and drink available
✅ Lots of Animal paddocks around the site.
✅Two well maintained playgrounds for kids - either end of the site
✅Take away food - near Jakks. Tasty freshly cooked food at a good prices
✅Site generally clean and tidy - didn't see any litter anywhere and plenty of bins placed around the site
✅ Reception Staff where informative and welcoming.
Groundsmen where helpful and friendly and delt with any problems straight away in a professional manner.
Other park staff were all friendly and chatty.
✅I was on the top field and it was well marked out, good size pitches, grass cut, everyone spaced out and lots of water points .
We had a great weekend, cheap an cheerful site. If the kids are happy then adults are happy x

Syntes om We had a lovely stay at the caravan site and would definitely come back. The site was very well maintained—everything was clean, tidy, and clearly well looked after. My daughter especially loved the play area, which kept her happily entertained while we relaxed. It had a really friendly atmosphere, and we felt welcome from the moment we arrived. A great place for a peaceful break with the family!

Shropshire is a pretty peaceful place without too many crowds most of the time, so grab your chance to get stuck into a few gentle activities like floating on the Shropshire Union Canal, river Severn or Llangollen canal (50 minutes' drive). The site is also within striking distance of Ironbridge Gorge (45 minutes), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Adore exploring the history of a place? Take yourself to spots like the British Ironwork Centre (35 minutes), Blists Hill Victorian Town (40 minutes) and Royal Air Force Museum Midlands (40 minutes), or pretend like you've gone back in time at Attingham Park (25 minutes), a National Trust site. The Quarry (half an hour) is a gorgeous spot for a little stroll in Shrewsbury, and if you fancy something a bit more challenging, Hawkstone Park Follies (five minutes) has sandstone hills and caves. If you're looking for activities that'll entertain the kids, however, make a beeline for Hoo Zoo and Dinosaur World (35 minutes). The site is near plenty of historic Shropshire towns and villages, from Hodnet (10 minutes) and Ellesmere (20 minutes) to Market Drayton (20 minutes) and Oswestry (40 minutes).
