General

  • Well-maintained and family-run site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Close to the Welsh border and 35 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • Outdoor activity and crafts centre on site

It might be old-school, but there's nothing too basic about The Old School Campsite in Shropshire, a family-friendly site 40 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury where hiking the hills, strolling the scenic countryside and canoeing the Severn are all a cinch.

The site’s close to the Welsh border and on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect lengthy walks through pretty hills and dales as well as splendid views all around.... and plenty of peace and quiet next to firepits in green fields, setting the barbecue smouldering for dinner and taking in the starry night sky.

By day, stroll over to the site’s activity centre for a host of arts and crafts workshops: guests can embrace their artistic sides with silver jewellery, felt, knitting, enamelling or batik workshops on site, to wrap up stays with handmade souvenirs to boast about back home.

If that sounds too laidback, spend time at the activity centre chatting to owners Rachel and Stuart instead. They’ll help guests to organise rock climbing days, paddleboard lessons, canoeing trips on the Severn and the Montgomery Canal, and mountain biking excursions on the trails nearby – or venture out solo on wanders along the long-distance Shropshire Way, which passes within minutes of the site.

We were the only people on site as this was a quiet time of year. Everything had been provided to make the stay comfortable and enjoyable. My son, age 10, completed two workshops, marbling and enamelling, and he enjoyed these immensely.

It was quite cold, being January, but the tent was warm with a decent heater and plenty of blankets being provided. There was a fire pit and another smaller fire basket so with these going it was warm to stay outside until late too. The site is near to local walks and amenities.

There is a stone circle nearby that involves a climb and there are other routes leading from it, worth a visit. I look forward to returning again with my other son to try out some of the other activities and visit more if this beautiful area.

    Disliked:

There were no negatives in relation to our stay. The site is next to a road but this is not an issue as relatively quiet, particularly in the evening. Everything was as arranged and the hosts were available in case if any difficulties.

I had a message before arriving to let me know who would be around. I came for the week of Christmas '19 so I expected noone. It was the perfect Christmas getaway. There was WiFi when needed, a very lovely snood and wooly hat on arrival, plus every cooking amenity I could imagine. Also extra wood again, thrown in because of the weather I imagine, and because I was on my own. The shower room was always heated, and clean. Back in the bell tent, the bed was very comfortable, set up with a heater that kept me and the tent toasty when needed.

    Disliked:

Literally only thing was the pressure of the shower I had to chuck 50p into. I see why it's needed, but as an extra, which you only see the result from once you pay, it wasn't as brilliant as the rest of the stay. Again, only minor though.

The exclusivity of the site. Small and compact with stunning views and a very relaxing atmosphere. Loads to do in the area which made every day interesting. If you wanted to simply sit and relax there was ample room to do that. Our hosts Sam and Jo were brilliant. Checking on everyone to ensure all was perfect for everyone's stay.

Local attractions

There’s plenty hereabouts to keep even the most avid explorer busy for lengthy hols. As well as the long-distance Shropshire Way, the site is within half an hour of trails at Manstone Rock, the other Stiperstones (and the rest of Stiperstones National Nature Reserve), the Shropshire Hills and Long Mynd.

Looking for a getaway for the history books? Dive right in at the House on Crutches Museum 15 minutes away in Bishop’s Castle for an overview of the area, then get a bit more specific at Snailbeach Lead Mine (check ahead for opening times) and further afield at Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard.

If that’s still not enough time in the past, glide to stately piles and old castles at Powis, Stokesay, Ludlow and Wilderhope within 40 minutes, or jump in the time machine for a day at the birthplace of the industrial revolution – the open-air Ironbridge Gorge museums.

When travelling with impressionable minds, give kids (and grownups) a secretly educational outing among the beasties at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom within an hour, hear about near Earth objects at the Spaceguard Centre and observatory 40 minutes away, or (and?) swim with the fishes (not literally) an hour and a half from base at Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (8.5 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (12.1 miles)
  • Ludlow Castle (18.4 miles)
