The Old School Campsite: The glamping

General

  • Well-maintained and family-run site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Close to the Welsh border and 35 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • Outdoor activity and crafts centre on site

It might be old-school, but there's nothing too basic about The Old School Campsite in Shropshire, a family-friendly site 40 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury where hiking the hills, strolling the scenic countryside and canoeing the Severn are all a cinch.

The site’s close to the Welsh border and on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect lengthy walks through pretty hills and dales as well as splendid views all around.... and plenty of peace and quiet next to firepits in green fields, setting the barbecue smouldering for dinner and taking in the starry night sky.

By day, stroll over to the site’s activity centre for a host of arts and crafts workshops: guests can embrace their artistic sides with silver jewellery, felt, knitting, enamelling or batik workshops on site, to wrap up stays with handmade souvenirs to boast about back home.

If that sounds too laidback, spend time at the activity centre chatting to owners Rachel and Stuart instead. They’ll help guests to organise rock climbing days, paddleboard lessons, canoeing trips on the Severn and the Montgomery Canal, and mountain biking excursions on the trails nearby – or venture out solo on wanders along the long-distance Shropshire Way, which passes within minutes of the site.

On a quiet weekend break. Ran out of gas for cooking within about 10 minutes of arriving, but the site is really well equipped so this didn’t spoil our holiday!

First, the shop is unattended but super easy to use via QR codes and a web store, so I was able to buy hot drinks and didn’t need to miss my coffee for a few days.

Second, the shop has things like coal and BBQ hire so we were able to get what we needed to make tea. Managed to cook a madras and even make coffee; not ideal but rescued me from my poor planning.

Third, while we were one of only two visitors it was clearly a cared-for site and I’d have no worries about being there on a busier weekend.

Great place for visiting the local area.

    Disliked:

WiFi signal strength could be better at range, (something like a UWB-XG would be fantastic). Bit more signposting to local sights/walks would be nice, maybe I missed that somewhere tho.

Had a lovely Easter Egg hunt for kids on Sunday morning. Tent was clean and neat. Linen and beds were lovely!

    Disliked:

Bathrooms were dirty most of the time, you had to pay for a shower and lights only went on when it was dark outside which was not sufficient as bathrooms where dark inside , only one washing up basin for the entire site. Pitches were small and right on-top of each other. You had no privacy or space from your neighbours. There were no BBQ utensils or serving dishes to put food onto. The lawn on the pitches was long. There were no activities for the children that did not cost a fortune. We have been to many campsites and where really disappointed. We actually checked out a day early and lost close on £80. Will not be going back.

    Disliked:

Could have done with much bigger marshmallows for the Smores!
On the website I paid for firepit hire, but when we got there they were free to use. Got wood instead tho

From the manager...

Thank you for your feedback.
The smores kit comes with standard sized marshmallows.
The description of the extra you bought is 'The firepit itself is included in your booking but if you want wood we can provide a pack to get you going.'

Local attractions

There’s plenty hereabouts to keep even the most avid explorer busy for lengthy hols. As well as the long-distance Shropshire Way, the site is within half an hour of trails at Manstone Rock, the other Stiperstones (and the rest of Stiperstones National Nature Reserve), the Shropshire Hills and Long Mynd.

Looking for a getaway for the history books? Dive right in at the House on Crutches Museum 15 minutes away in Bishop’s Castle for an overview of the area, then get a bit more specific at Snailbeach Lead Mine (check ahead for opening times) and further afield at Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard.

If that’s still not enough time in the past, glide to stately piles and old castles at Powis, Stokesay, Ludlow and Wilderhope within 40 minutes, or jump in the time machine for a day at the birthplace of the industrial revolution – the open-air Ironbridge Gorge museums.

When travelling with impressionable minds, give kids (and grownups) a secretly educational outing among the beasties at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom within an hour, hear about near Earth objects at the Spaceguard Centre and observatory 40 minutes away, or (and?) swim with the fishes (not literally) an hour and a half from base at Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (8.5 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (12.1 miles)
  • Ludlow Castle (18.4 miles)

National Trust

  • Carding Mill Valley and the Shropshire Hills (7.7 miles)
  • Wilderhope Manor (14.2 miles)
