The Old School Campsite: The glamping

General

  • Well-maintained and family-run site in the Shropshire Hills
  • Close to the Welsh border and 35 minutes' drive from Shrewsbury
  • Outdoor activity and crafts centre on site

It might be old-school, but there's nothing too basic about The Old School Campsite in Shropshire, a family-friendly site 40 minutes’ drive from Shrewsbury where hiking the hills, strolling the scenic countryside and canoeing the Severn are all a cinch.

The site’s close to the Welsh border and on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect lengthy walks through pretty hills and dales as well as splendid views all around.... and plenty of peace and quiet next to firepits in green fields, setting the barbecue smouldering for dinner and taking in the starry night sky.

By day, stroll over to the site’s activity centre for a host of arts and crafts workshops: guests can embrace their artistic sides with silver jewellery, felt, knitting, enamelling or batik workshops on site, to wrap up stays with handmade souvenirs to boast about back home.

If that sounds too laidback, spend time at the activity centre chatting to owners Rachel and Stuart instead. They’ll help guests to organise rock climbing days, paddleboard lessons, canoeing trips on the Severn and the Montgomery Canal, and mountain biking excursions on the trails nearby – or venture out solo on wanders along the long-distance Shropshire Way, which passes within minutes of the site.

Lovely friendly site with great facilities but bit noisy from the road06/09/2021

Loved the cosy and friendly nature of the site, great and clean facilities within spitting distance of our pitch. So well kitted out with BBQs and firepits to lend out and packs of wood that you could buy just using a QR code!
Great access to lovely walks straight out of the campsite too with blackberries in abundance.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately quite noisy from the road and some huge lorries thunder past which woke us up in the morning.
Didn't realise about the marquee until late on as this wasn't obvious when we arrived, maybe guests could be told about this clearly in an email in advance as we weren't told about this on arrival?
Activity list impressive but expensive we felt and no guidance on what age the activities were suitable for for children?
No hot water to wash pots up at any point during our stay.

Loved the location - loads of walking opportunities and we enjoyed a short one to Mitchell's Fold Stone Circle with 15 stones (not bad!) and beautiful views of both England and Wales. Clean facilities - small place but not crowded and very peaceful - site is off the A road but traffic not heavy. Friendly staff and clearly lots of activities possible - we didn't stay long enough but would definitely return for more!

The bell tent had great electric and enough room and was cosy. The climbing wall and instruction from Stuart was great! My girls loved it. The facilities were nice and clean and it was great they provided wood and fire pits for the evening.

    Disliked:

The noise of the traffic from the road - couldn’t be helped but was very loud in the morning rush hour, it woke the kids early and felt like the lorries were entering the tent!

Local attractions

There’s plenty hereabouts to keep even the most avid explorer busy for lengthy hols. As well as the long-distance Shropshire Way, the site is within half an hour of trails at Manstone Rock, the other Stiperstones (and the rest of Stiperstones National Nature Reserve), the Shropshire Hills and Long Mynd.

Looking for a getaway for the history books? Dive right in at the House on Crutches Museum 15 minutes away in Bishop’s Castle for an overview of the area, then get a bit more specific at Snailbeach Lead Mine (check ahead for opening times) and further afield at Wroxeter Roman City and Vineyard.

If that’s still not enough time in the past, glide to stately piles and old castles at Powis, Stokesay, Ludlow and Wilderhope within 40 minutes, or jump in the time machine for a day at the birthplace of the industrial revolution – the open-air Ironbridge Gorge museums.

When travelling with impressionable minds, give kids (and grownups) a secretly educational outing among the beasties at Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom within an hour, hear about near Earth objects at the Spaceguard Centre and observatory 40 minutes away, or (and?) swim with the fishes (not literally) an hour and a half from base at Blue Planet Aquarium in Ellesmere Port.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (13.7 kilometres)
  • Stokesay Castle (19.5 kilometres)
  • Ludlow Castle (29.7 kilometres)
