  • Low-impact eco site in a dark skies area next to the Shropshire Hills
  • Wroxeter Roman City 20 minutes' drive; walks directly from the site
  • Spacious pitches and spectacular views; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you ready to see the stars? When the conditions are clear, your chances are spectacularly high at Spring Field Dark Skies Camping, set within a dark skies area on the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Not only that, but during the daytime, there are stunning views over the hills; keep your eyes peeled, and you might just see buzzards or red kites flying overhead This is a low-impact eco site where there's open field management (to attract birds of prey), a solar installation (to provide all electrical supplies) and additional eco features including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities. On-site numbers are also kept low to allow for more spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and to keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe. Don't forget your walking boots here; there are lots of walks beginning directly from the field. If you’re keen to take a picnic along on your walk, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car). A modern woodfired pizza oven is in the central area of the site for guests to use, as is a communal sheltered picnic pod with phone charging facilities. There's also a communal firepit and a central fire-safe area (for barbecues and personal firepits, subject to inspection for safety reasons). Amenities are fairly simple at Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp: drinking water taps and blocks with proper flushing toilets, showers and hot hand-washing facilities, plus separate grey and black water disposal points. Several traditional pubs serving fine food are within 15 minutes' drive of the site, and Shrewsbury is only 35 minutes away for bigger evenings out.

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (four person, small)

Liked A friendly and informative welcome
Amazing views
Well-organised with a relaxed feel
Amenities were all clean - loved the reminders to leave them clean and not waste water

Disliked Not really a dislike. More of an observation - the mirrors in the ladies facilities were obviously put up by someone a lot taller than your average woman.

From the manager: Thank you for your thoughtful review.
I looked at the mirrors in the loos and agree. I'm 5'3" and I struggled..
I will get it sorted but I thank anyone for constructive criticism

Malcolm, maintenance man is 6ft.

I'll cut him down to our size.

From the manager: Sorry if you had wifi problems but this is the country and we actually like our guests to relax away from the world (and it's the best we can get and share it for free)

Lower Field electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch (XL)

Liked We enjoyed our stay here, I found myself frequently staring at the landscape, its a beautiful location and very scenic. We stayed here in the middle of the week and it was relatively quiet. The hosts are very helpful and welcoming. Linda kindly let our girls see the hens and they came away with freshly laid eggs. There are clean facilities available and the site is quiet. We met some lovely other campers there too.

From the manager: We are pleased that our site gave you a feeling of peace looking out over our scenery. We pride ourselves on the tranquility. We can't always promise the weather.

It was lovely showing your girls where their eggs came from and having questions about hens from them.

We look forward to your next visit.

Non-electric grass tent pitch (backpacker, small, two person)

Liked Owners were so lovely and very understanding about a mistake I made on the booking! The site is beautiful with great facilities, perfect for a quiet getaway. Thank you so much!

From the manager: I know you gave a 9/10 overall but we are disappointed with value for money (free showers, wifi, lots of extras including fridge freezer, and location, 8/10 , when you refer to a beautiful site etc. Also WIFI 4 which is free and works so well all over our site. We really don't understand your review and were always here to help with any thing you needed.

Beautiful views. Lovely and peaceful. Firepit hire is fab.

Electric optional grass campervan pitch (maximum 7 metres)

Liked Loved this site. Don’t tell everyone but this is a seriously good site. Small and tonnes of personality. Well run and the view is stunning. Facilities are sufficient and clean. It’s not a visitor centre sort of campsite. It’s perfect. Small, just the right side of rustic. Owner is kind and friendly. Seriously good site.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind review and we are pleased that you appreciate our small but, we hope, perfectly formed site.

We never intend to get bigger and we would welcome you back any time.

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
