General

  • Off-grid campsite with spectacular views over the Shropshire Hills
  • Ironbridge Valley of Invention 25 minutes’ drive; hiking from site
  • Spacious grass pitches in a dark-skies area; shops 15 minutes’ drive

Are you ready for a real off-grid experience? One with spectacular views over hills on the edge of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with lots of walking options right from the camping field… and the chance to see buzzards or red kites flying overhead? If it’s yes to all those questions, then haste ye to Spring Field Dark Skies Camping.

On-site numbers are kept low to provide spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe of the place. Facilities are simple: solar power for the electricity and a private water supply (there’s also wifi – the kids will be pleased).

In terms of amenities, there are flushing toilets with hot hand-washing facilities and separate grey and black water disposal available. There is also a drive-on grey water point for motorhomes.

If you’re keen to hone your barbecuing skills, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car) to grill on the communal firepit. Otherwise there are several traditional pubs serving good grub within about the same distance, and Shrewsbury’s only 35 minutes away for big nights out.

By the way, the site’s in a dark-skies area, so if you get a clear night, don’t miss the chance to see the stars glittering in the heavens far above you.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

A cable measuring at least 15 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Units longer than 8 metres are not allowed.

Units heavier than 3500 kg are not allowed.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No electric barbecues allowed.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Fires, barbecues and/or firepits will not be permitted in dry, windy and/or hot weather conditions.

The charging of electric vehicles is not permitted on site.

So please you enjoyed our simple back to basic campsite with some Tech and Eco modern enhancements. As campervan travellers and owners of 30 years, its the type of site we ourselves look for. We will never crowd our site. The Fire-Pit has been a great social success this year and you can be assured it will be available next year. Extra toilet with hot hand-wash now installed.

Linda and Malcolm were very friendly and helpful. Checked in on us a couple of times but just left us to enjoy their beautiful camp site.
Pitches were nice size (at one point we were the only ones there so had the place to ourselves.
Love the fact that they are as eco friendly as possible and very mindful about the environment. Electric is solar powered and all water is from there own borehole.
Had EHU and WiFi which was great 😊

    Disliked:

Single toilet, which wasn’t too much of an issue until a few more people arrived (Malcolm did tell us they are in the process of getting another one up and running, which will be great) even tho one toilet was clean and tidy.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind review. So pleased you enjoyed your stay and appreciate our efforts to operate the site in an Eco Friendly way.. Yes we have been working on the limited toilet. We know this has been an issue at the weekends when we have more campers on the field. It should have been here 3 weeks ago but were let down by our supplier.
NEW extra flushing toilet installed today with warm water hand wash and mains lighting. Now were working on the shower facilities.

We had 2 tents with 16amp , a cool box each small fan heater each 1 electric radio , and phone chargers , for both tents , and electric hot plates each , we pitched up on the Friday and got electricity about 5.45 pm , the owner came to us on the Saturday morning saying we had used a lot of his solar energy approximately £14 . 88 between both tents and that he was worried that other tents were coming on and that the energy would run/trip out , from what we could understand. We all found this harsh as they shouldn’t have the amount of electric pitches if the supply cannot be met . We found this to dampen our stay and found that we were conscious for the rest of our stay on how much electricity we were using . And ended up been cold as we didn’t put the heater s on much . Which is the hole point of us having EHU . Also one toilet for the site which is stated on the information when booking , which can mean you have to wait when the site is busy , but it was always clean . What we can’t understand is our own 2 houses don’t use that amount of electricity in a full 24 hours . Because of this it felt like we were been watched . Also the tent next to us , at the electric point the light was flashing constantly throughout the night which the lady told him about , and he said it had been turned off , yet was still flashing for the next 2 nights , which ended up with coats trying to block it out .

From the manager...

We offer our site as Eco and Green Friendly but unfortunately these campers were neither Eco, Green or Friendly. If you are cold in midsummer, you have the wrong equipment. Heating a tent with electricity overnight is certainly environmentally unsustainable. What would the EPC rating be of a tent !!.
2 flushing toilets now on site.

The best approach directions are clearly given in the booking information. What3words: decking.above.rocks. Use the B4371 Much Wenlock to Church Stretton road and turn off through Hughley. It has the best access to the site and avoids narrow lanes.

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though).

Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash.

To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
