  • Low-impact eco site in a dark skies area next to the Shropshire Hills
  • Wroxeter Roman City 20 minutes' drive; walks directly from the site
  • Spacious pitches and spectacular views; shops 15 minutes’ drive
Are you ready to see the stars? When the conditions are clear, your chances are spectacularly high at Spring Field Dark Skies Camping, set within a dark skies area on the edge of the Shropshire Hills National Landscape. Not only that, but during the daytime, there are stunning views over the hills; keep your eyes peeled, and you might just see buzzards or red kites flying overhead This is a low-impact eco site where there's open field management (to attract birds of prey), a solar installation (to provide all electrical supplies) and additional eco features including eco-friendly mowers and recycling facilities. On-site numbers are also kept low to allow for more spacious pitches and privacy for all guests, and to keep the ‘away-from-it-all’ vibe. Don't forget your walking boots here; there are lots of walks beginning directly from the field. For another style of outdoor activity, sign up for a canoe hire experience on the river Severn. If you’re keen to hone your barbecuing skills too, pick up gourmet treats from the well-known butcher in Much Wenlock (15 minutes by car). A modern woodfired pizza oven is in the central area of the site for guests to use, as is a communal sheltered picnic pod with a TV and phone charging facilities. There's also a communal firepit and a central fire-safe area (for barbecues and personal firepits, subject to inspection). You're welcome to have a barbecue at your pitch, but only under the condition that they're one of the woodfired barbecues hired out by the site. Amenities are fairly simple at Spring Field Dark Skies Eco Camp: drinking water taps and blocks with proper flushing toilets, showers and hot hand-washing facilities, plus separate grey and black water disposal points. Several traditional pubs serving fine food are within 15 minutes' drive of the site, and Shrewsbury is only 35 minutes away for bigger evenings out.

Power optional grass campervan campsite (maximum 7 metres)

Liked Loved this site. Don’t tell everyone but this is a seriously good site. Small and tonnes of personality. Well run and the view is stunning. Facilities are sufficient and clean. It’s not a visitor centre sort of campsite. It’s perfect. Small, just the right side of rustic. Owner is kind and friendly. Seriously good site.

Power optional grass tent or trailer tent campsite

Liked Great views, spacious pitches, water and electric at each pitch, great space nearby for fire pits and pizzas, not too far from facilities, loved the lights on loos and showers to see when free, great hosts and welcome, good info for locals, communal fridge great and eggs logs etc available! No dogs and no poo great for kids! We saw red kites and pheasants and rabbits. Close to loads of great stuff to do. Plenty of room for kids to play. Quiet at night. No road noise or other noise at night.

Hide Away primitive grass tent campsite (secluded)

Liked I stayed for one night at Spring Fields Dark Skies Eco Camp and had such a peaceful, memorable experience. The owner met me at the gate on arrival and personally showed me around, which was a lovely touch. As there was only one other camper there, I was even able to choose my own spot, making it feel really special and private.

The facilities were excellent — the toilets and showers were clean, well stocked, and had a great lighting and locking system that made everything feel safe and comfortable, even after dark.

The views across the Shropshire Hills are absolutely stunning, especially at sunset. It was the perfect setting to unwind. I spent the evening sitting by the fire pit, watching the sky fade into darkness and then fill with stars — exactly what you’d hope for from a dark skies campsite.

I also appreciated the little charging pod for phones, which is a thoughtful addition, and the no-vehicles policy on site after unloading really adds to the calm, natural atmosphere.

Overall, a beautifully quiet and well-run eco camp — I’d definitely stay again.

Disliked The ladybirds in the shower.

From the manager: We are pleased that you felt safe at our campsite. We are always aware that sometimes, people like solitude or peace from the busy world and we aim to offer just that.
A nod in our direction and we will always accommodate space.

Sorry about the ladybirds but we do seem to be having a glut of them. I try to free as many as possible but a few are really stubborn.
We hope to see you again

Local attractions

If you’re an active family looking for sporty pursuits, whizz around on quad bikes, try an archery session or improve your aim while shooting clays at The Edge Adventure Activities (15 minutes’ drive). Go pony trekking in the Shropshire Hills (25 minutes), or take to the water in a kayak on the River Severn (half an hour). And of course, there are loads of hiking trails to explore on foot or by bike (an electric bike might make some of those hills easier though). Sneak a bit of history into the holiday mix with a potter around the ruins at Wroxeter Roman City (20 minutes), where you can also see a recreated Roman townhouse, and move forward to the 18th century at National Trust - Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (15 minutes) to admire the Italianate villa built by mega-architect John Nash. To continue the cultural theme, plan to spend a day discovering the numerous museums and attractions at Ironbridge Valley of Invention (25 minutes), where highlights include the chance to get dressed up in period hats at Blists Hill Victorian Town, pull a locomotive down the track at Engenuity or go deep underground in a tunnel oozing with bitumen.
