  • Site in the Shropshire Hills with views over a lake and the Long Mynd
  • A 20-minute drive from Stiperstones and half an hour from Shrewsbury
  • On a public footpath near Gatten, a 20-minute drive to Bishop’s Castle
Near Gatten Campsite is a small, basic site on a small farm. It's on a public footpath right in the thick of the Shropshire Hills, with views of a lovely lake and the even lovelier Longmynd moorland plateau. As you might already have gathered from reading this description and looking at the pics, there are excellent walks to be had over the heaths and around Stiperstones National Nature Reserve from this park, five miles away through cracking countryside. For shorter strolls with friends and family, a well-known pub is about half an hour away on foot. Groups are welcome at this site, but overall it’s a peaceful place spread over an eight-acre field to make sure all guests have ample room. And while the setup is simple, it does have showers, flushing toilets and multiple water points. Fancy flinging food on a fire for sustenance? Building a blaze is permitted at the park but it must be off-ground (firepits are available to borrow with a deposit, and wood is sold on site). When travelling to Near Gatten Campsite, it’s best to avoid coming over the Long Mynd as this route is along a narrow country lane with steep drops. Drive via Buildbase on Longden Road in Shrewsbury, half an hour away, instead.

Local attractions

Walking is your main modus operandi when in the Shropshire Hills. This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is home to the Long Mynd and Carding Mill Valley, as well as the Stiperstones nature reserve (five minutes' drive), so it’s hardly short of places to stroll. Head to the peak of the former spot for views over a 50-mile radius or stroll about the latter to set eyes upon an intriguing ridge studded with quartzite rock. Look out for birds – rarities such as the hawfinch have been spotted in the area – or go pond dipping and wild swimming in the bodies of water scattered throughout the landscape. Mountain bike trails and bridleways are all around too for explores on the saddle (whether cycling or horse riding) and tiny towns like the Bishop’s Castle (20 minutes) with its 18th-century Town Hall are worth a stop as well.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Me and my partner attempted to stay here on Saturday but were absolutely appalled at what exactly we turned up to?! Derelict toilets, graffiti on signs, it looked like a disused commune of some kind. Drove around, found no one, took pictures and left. Wouldn’t pay 22p to stay here! What a waste of £22!!

Disliked: All of the above

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: This is a back to basics campsite- felt very freeing! Lovely to be out in nature and the view is gorgeous. Great to have walks straight out of the door. Facilities are basic but functioning and clean- don’t expect anything glamorous! Ideal for a retreat into nature.

Disliked: Needs a check in system! Took a while to find anyone on arrival and didn’t get any answer from the phone number.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Peaceful site with stunning views. Basic amenities but clean and functional. Great location for cycling / walking. Dark skies for stargazing. Lots of space to pitch, including a decent amount of level ground.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Quiet and great view over the valley. Reasonably level pitches although the soil cover was thin where I pitched but it was possible to erect the tent. A flushing toilet and a very welcome warm shower. The grass was cut and I found a random chair to sit on. I was the only person on site and that was very welcome. I had a very pleasant stay.

Disliked: Well, it is all a bit run down looking. Overall it looked like the site the world has forgotten which is a shame as the view is so good. Simple things would improve the look and feel - for example: 1. Make sure everything that is provided works. Two out of three showers blocked off, presumably broken, heater fan not working in the showers. Not that it was necessary but if it is there it should work, ditto water heater for the wash basins. If there are soap dispensers then make sure they are full. 2. Make things look straight and of good quality - make it work. The facilities cabins all look a bit lopsided, some rusty bits on the facilities cabins, odd screws poking through in the one working shower. 3. Plant some screening between the campsite and the more industrial parts of the rest of the higher land. It may be all good valuable stuff but it looks like a scrap yard. The happy campers don't really want to look at the world of work. 4. Why were all the lights on? I actually took the liberty of turning most off. It is just a waste of money when there is no one there. 5. Mow the verges that are laden with weeds. 6. Provide some bins. I could but won't go on.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked: Quiet, rural location with lots of birds and wildlife. Good walking right from the site. Proper toilets and showers (don't look much from the outside but all working). Firm, gently sloping terraces to pitch on.

Disliked: Steep slope back onto the main road means a tricky handbrake start in a motorhome. Easier to turn left and turn around than turn right.
