Abdo Hill Farm: View of the field from the kid's play area

General

  • Scenic family site with spectacular views of the Shropshire Hills
  • A half-hour drive from Ironbridge, Hoo Farm and Telford Steam Railway
  • Ramblers' paradise: climb the Wrekin within half an hour’s drive

Fancy quiet hols in pretty and peaceful Shropshire countryside? Tiptoe along to Abdo Hill Farm, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from Shropshire's Market Drayton.

This is outdoor holidaymaking without too many bells and whistles… facilities like toilet blocks, waste disposal and barbecue disposal are all in place, but there’s nothing else to distract from unwinding days of playing with the kids or taking a walk with the family’s four-legged companion.

There are plenty of walks to inspire waggy tails and happy humans hereabouts though, starting with a stroll along Shropshire Union Canal (which passes about five minutes away) before travelling on half an hour to Ercall Wood, where an eight-mile loop that climbs the Wrekin starts. Do try to make it all the way to the top too, as it’s said one can see five counties from the peak on a clear day…

It can be a challenging climb, so make sure to load up on fresh eggs and home-cured bacon (available on site) before the attempt, and plan to self-reward with some pub food and pints at the nearby inn less than five minutes from base, once the path circles back to terra firma.

Great small site but with plenty of allocated space. Paul (the owner) was very welcoming and had sent us very useful directions in advanced. Extremely clean site with good facilities. Yes, as others have mentioned there aren't many toilets or showers, but it really wasn't a problem and the site was full while we were there. Loved the Ice-cream van turning up daily and how quiet the site was at night. Everyone was there to have a good time but respectful that people like to sleep! Will definitely book again.

    Disliked:

A freezer to freeze ice-blocks would be a helpful addition but didn't detract from our stay.

Great site, clean facilities, small park for children05/06/2022

Received a text message from Paul, the owner on the morning of arrival, giving instructions how to get to the site and to ring him when we arrive. Rang Paul and he came straight over. We were 3 families, 5 adults, 2 children and 4 dogs between us. Although I’d made 3 separate bookings, I phoned in advance to ask if possible to have the 3 pitches together, Paul said that this wouldn’t be a problem.

We were 3 tent pitches with EHU.

The site is well looked after, small park for the children, with picnic benches for adults to supervise. Purpose built hut with 2 showers and 2 toilets and a sink, no problem with hot water. Additional toilet rolls, cleaning products for campers to use, Paul asks that toilets / showers are left as you find them. Although the site was full, never had to wait to use the showers or toilets. Paul said he’s working towards opening a bigger shower and toilet block in the near future.

We had a bbq / fire pit, Paul provided flags too put this on and had bags of logs for sale £5 per bag.

Paul asked that no noise from 11pm. We usually went to bed around 10pm and didn’t hear noise from the other campers.

Paul knowledgable about the area, friends of ours had a flat trailer tyre and Paul gave advice on where to go to have this fixed.

Paul visited each pitch once daily to make sure everyone was ok, happy and had everything we needed.

The site is next to a main road, sounded like drag racing on the 1st night, but Paul said that a lot of bikes use this road on a Thursday evening. The other nights, didn’t really notice the traffic noise.

Speaking to others using the site, they also said how great it was.

Icecream van came around daily, usually tea time, decent prices.

I would recommend staying at this site. Ignore the negative reviews, we had no issues at all.

Thanks Paul, we had a great weekend!!

welcoming & friendly owner, decent & clean facilities. My youngest loved the park & the fact he was allowed to ride his bike ! Loved it ! Returned home feeling relaxed.
    Will definitely be returning.

    Disliked:

Only down side would be the low number of facilities at busy periods, we were ok because we were in a caravan with our own available but I did see queues for toilets and sink washing area from guests in tents/ campers
As Abdo hill is a small site this is to be expected, I’m sure once the site expands this would be improved.

Amiable and enthusiastic host Paul was delightful and helpful despite the ravages of hay fever. Enjoyed our brief stay here but very likely to be back.

Local attractions

Start nearby explores with an immediate trip into Market Drayton, 10 minutes’ drive from the site: there are plenty of small independent shops and restaurants to try out, indoor and outdoor pools to plunge into, and a local brewery where tours are a must. The market town was the one-time home of gingerbread too, so make sure to sample the wares, liberally…

See more of the Shropshire countryside by heading next to Norbury Junction 20 minutes away, where the canal’s barges are moored and where there’s a narrowboat that visitors can catch for slow-paced puttering along the waterways.

This is a particularly stellar part of the country for delving into the past too: history buffs can have their pick from stately homes, National Trust sites and the tar tunnel, china museum and Victorian village of Ironbridge Gorge, all within about half an hour, and the famed Hawkestone Park Follies are 10 minutes from base.

Ease the rest of the family into the right frame of mind with jaunts on the Woodseaves Miniature Railway (five minutes away) and the Telford Steam Railway half an hour from the site, or opt instead for some time among the animals – Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom is 25 minutes from home base and Trentham Monkey Factory is a little under 40 minutes away.

Must see

  • The Trentham Estate (14.3 miles)
  • Trentham Monkey Forest (14.5 miles)
