Abdo Hill Farm: View of the field from the kid's play area

General

  • Scenic family site with spectacular views of the Shropshire Hills
  • A half-hour drive from Ironbridge, Hoo Farm and Telford Steam Railway
  • Ramblers' paradise: climb the Wrekin within half an hour’s drive

Fancy quiet hols in pretty and peaceful Shropshire countryside? Tiptoe along to Abdo Hill Farm, a family-friendly site less than 10 minutes’ drive from Shropshire's Market Drayton.

This is outdoor holidaymaking without too many bells and whistles… facilities like toilet blocks, waste disposal and barbecue disposal are all in place, but there’s nothing else to distract from unwinding days of playing with the kids or taking a walk with the family’s four-legged companion.

There are plenty of walks to inspire waggy tails and happy humans hereabouts though, starting with a stroll along Shropshire Union Canal (which passes about five minutes away) before travelling on half an hour to Ercall Wood, where an eight-mile loop that climbs the Wrekin starts. Do try to make it all the way to the top too, as it’s said one can see five counties from the peak on a clear day…

It can be a challenging climb, so make sure to load up on fresh eggs and home-cured bacon (available on site) before the attempt, and plan to self-reward with some pub food and pints at the nearby inn less than five minutes from base, once the path circles back to terra firma.

What a lovely campsite absolutely loved it. A nice small campsite with lovely views and a lovely friendly and helpful owner Paul. The kids loved the play area and they said they liked the views and how quiet it was. With 2 children with autism this is a nice quiet location. The facilities were good. paul was always checking them and making sure they was clean and tidy. Paul was always checking on us making sure we was having a good time and telling us about places we could visit. We went to the red lion which was a lovely 20min walk down some country roads. The food was lovely nice home cooked food. We are definitely going to come here again. Thank you Paul.

Clean facilities and friendly host. Lovely park for the younger children. Campsite was quiet, yes you can hear the road noise but it would only bother you if you let it. Paul is the friendliest host you will ever meet. Always at hand if you need him, greets you on arrival and came to say goodbye on departure. Pitch was nice and flat and great views out over the fields. Would not hesitate to return.

Very clean facilities and friendly staff. The park is a fantastic addition to the site. Paul the owner is very helpful and always makes sure everyone is ok. We had a problem with our tent on arrival and Paul went out of his way to find us a spare tent which he let us keep. We will definitely be returning.

Paul the host was a really nice guy and very helpful. Nice clean and tidy, quite small site but with good sized pitches. Plenty of hot water for wash up and showers only two toilets and two showers (only had to que for the toilet once for a very sort time) so no issues. One wash up, we could see from our pitch when it was free so never caused any issues.
Chip shop and convenience store half a mile away (10 min walk), Redwood American smokehouse resturant and take away next door (which I highly recomend a try).
We walked into Market Drayton which took us 1.25hrs, Paul gave us spot on directions on quiet country roads which was a lovely walk with our two dogs. (Only about 10/15min drive)

    Disliked:

Quite a busy main road close to the site, (didn't disturb us too much) but the motor bikes whizzing up and down like a bee in a baked bean tin got a little tedious at times.

Local attractions

Start nearby explores with an immediate trip into Market Drayton, 10 minutes’ drive from the site: there are plenty of small independent shops and restaurants to try out, indoor and outdoor pools to plunge into, and a local brewery where tours are a must. The market town was the one-time home of gingerbread too, so make sure to sample the wares, liberally…

See more of the Shropshire countryside by heading next to Norbury Junction 20 minutes away, where the canal’s barges are moored and where there’s a narrowboat that visitors can catch for slow-paced puttering along the waterways.

This is a particularly stellar part of the country for delving into the past too: history buffs can have their pick from stately homes, National Trust sites and the tar tunnel, china museum and Victorian village of Ironbridge Gorge, all within about half an hour, and the famed Hawkestone Park Follies are 10 minutes from base.

Ease the rest of the family into the right frame of mind with jaunts on the Woodseaves Miniature Railway (five minutes away) and the Telford Steam Railway half an hour from the site, or opt instead for some time among the animals – Hoo Farm Animal Kingdom is 25 minutes from home base and Trentham Monkey Factory is a little under 40 minutes away.

Must see

  • The Trentham Estate (23.0 kilometres)
  • Trentham Monkey Forest (23.3 kilometres)
  • Wedgwood Visitor Centre (24.8 kilometres)

  • Sunnycroft (19.4 kilometres)
