  • Campsite next to the Severn Valley Railway in Shropshire countryside
  • A 25-minute drive to West Midlands Safari Park; Ironbridge 40 minutes
  • Playground, fairy village and nature pond on site; steam train views
What a spot for vintage train lovers. Wellness Woodlands has a peaceful rural setting in Shropshire countryside near Bridgnorth, and a stay here offers all comers the chance to spy steam engines chugging past the camping field on the historic Severn Valley Railway. Round and about on site – set over 20 acres so there are lots of walks to explore amid woodland planted with native trees – are four wildlife ponds as well as resident geese, chickens and ducks. You may also get lucky and see buzzards and red kites circling above, or woodpeckers among the trees. Kids are welcomed with open arms here, and they can keep themselves entertained at the play area, find rope swings in the woods or head off to discover the themed fairy village. To keep you, your offspring and any dogs safe, no vehicles are allowed by the pitches. This is an eco-friendly, off-grid campsite (note: off-grid equals no electricity), with no-frills amenities including separate showers and an outdoor sink for washing up. If the weather turns, simply take cover at the HUB communal area. As far as catering goes, buy foodie supplies in Highley (five minutes’ drive) or dodge cooking altogether by eating in the pubs there. Back at base, buy fresh eggs for a breakfast fry-up or spread your bread with honey produced by the resident bees. As this is a quiet site, portable sound systems are not permitted. Please be particularly considerate of others between 10pm and 6am. Please note that the site grounds are not completely even and that cars cannot be parked by the pitches (trolleys are available to help you transport your luggage from the parking area).

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Love it, they’ve made sure you have lots of space so it feels relaxed and things to entertain the little ones. As it was hot we walked down to the river for a swim too. Some great amenities too, such as a grill and fridge.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: Absolutely loved our stay here. From the moment we were greeted by the guard geese, the walk through the fairy village, to getting everything back to the car quickly using the trolleys provided; it was fabulous. Our spot was perfect for sun and shade, we got our hammock up for the first time and had so much space and privacy. There were other tents around, but we’re far enough away in the distance to not know they were there. Facilities were good, and the option to use the fridge was welcomed in the heat at the weekend. Really friendly host, welcoming but also happy to leave you to yourself. Enjoyed the walk down to the station to see the steamtrain, and popped over to Bridgnorth for the day (also a wonderful place) Cannot rate this site highly enough.

Disliked: Nothing to dislike about it at all.

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: The location was beautiful. Facilities were basic but more than suitable. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Even though it was a bank holiday, and quite a few families about, it was quiet, and peaceful at night.

Stargazer bell tent (large)

Liked: Beautiful surroundings, comfortable bell tent which was very cosy. Loved that a stove and gas was supplied and basics needed to eat in a little hut. Any needs were met straight away. Responsive owners. Wonderful getaway for peace and quiet to escape everyday life. Daughter loved the fairy village and watching the geese and trains. Great fire pit and little bbq.

Disliked: The plastic on the star gazer tent was grubby so we couldn’t actually see the sky which was a shame as it was a clear night! Probably due to the heavy rainfall we have had though! Maybe some children’s play equipment for younger children would be be beneficial too!

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was easy tinting and well situated. Plenty of level places and flexibility to set up the tents. The site had been meticulously thought about with children in mind, with trolleys and carvings and parks and a fairy village and ponds (fenced off) and picnic areas that my kids were entirely smitten with. There is a good fish and chip shop in the village and there were plenty of structures to communally shelter from inclement weather under. There were plenty of fire outs and wood available to roast marshmallows. All in all it was a great trip and we couldn't have asked for more

Non-electric grass and earth tent pitch

Liked: A lovely, peaceful back to nature campsite, magical for young children. Lots of lovely details like colouring in the hub, the fairy garden and mud kitchen. Not overly busy with plenty of room to spread out & children to play football etc. Everything we needed to wash ourselves and plates and pans. Lovely local village with plenty of amenities like the co-op and The Ship Inn for a delicious Sunday carvery.

Disliked: Young children may struggle with the walk into the village as narrow roads or lots of step through woodland/country park - we ended up using the car to get everywhere.
