General
- Wild-ish camping in a peaceful south Shropshire meadow
- A 15-minute drive to Bridgnorth; 25 minutes to Ironbridge museums
- 'Leave no trace' site with lots of wildlife and lovely views
Get set for a mini adventure in the meadows at Monkhopton Meadow Camping – follow a little stone track off the road and you’ll arrive in an unspoilt natural meadow that’s just the place for a bit of peaceful wild (ish) camping in the south Shropshire hills.
What makes it wild (ish)? Well, this is a real back to basics setup, with no electricity or lighting on site, but it does have a small nod to home comforts in the form of portable toilets for guests to use. Other than that, it’s just you, an abundance of wildlife to spot, and a peaceful atmosphere punctuated only by the noises of nature.
A wander around the site rewards you with views of the livestock on the surrounding hills, streams on site and lots of birds singing in the trees. It’s all rather relaxed and gorgeous – and to keep it that way you’ll be asked to respect the natural environment and other guests and to ‘leave no trace’, taking care to remove your rubbish and leave the place as you found it.
Shopping local is another good way to have a positive impact on the area – and luckily that’s easily done as it’s only about five minutes’ drive to the pretty village of Ditton Priors for a shop, a café and a local butcher. More shops, places to eat and other amenities are on hand in Bridgnorth (15 minutes’ drive) and foodie favourite Ludlow (half an hour).
If you need any extra items, there's plenty of stuff available to hire from the site, including but not limited to food hampers, bags of ice, blow-up airbeds, hammocks, camping chairs, gazebos, an extra tent and a travel cot.
Get your outdoors fix at the activity centre 15 minutes' drive away, which runs activities like clay shooting and quad biking.

Local attractions
Monkhopton is just outside the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so that means lots of walks and bike rides are easily accessible from here. If you’d like a bit of woolly company for your walk, book yourselves in for alpaca treks (short family-friendly ones or longer outings) with Severn Valley Alpacas (25 minutes’ drive).
Bridgnorth (15 minutes) is a nice place to wander around too, with a castle and the waterside DanIels Mill to visit; you can also hire canoes in town for paddling along the River Severn. Dudmaston Estate, just outside Bridgnorth (20 minutes from Monkhopton) has an excellent art collection as well as pretty terraced gardens; other stately homes to visit nearby include Stokesay Castle (25 minutes) and Attingham Park (half an hour).
For different views on history, go all the way back in time at Wroxeter Roman City or explore the many attractions of Ironbridge (both 25 minutes), which has interactive exhibits at Blists Hill Victorian Town and Enginuity and a tile museum (plus the bridge itself, of course).
