  • Shepherd’s hut in the peaceful Shropshire hamlet of Aston Botterell
  • A 40-minute drive to Ironbridge Valley of Invention; Ludlow 20 minutes
  • Retro-style glamping with a private garden and sheltered decking
Tucked away in a Shropshire field in the pretty hamlet of Aston Botterell, pride of place at adults-only Cadink goes to a genuine 1930s shepherd’s hut. Originally used by shepherds locking after their flocks on the Wiltshire Downs, it has been the site owners’ private garden hideaway for 25 years. Now the hut has been carefully restored (see if you can spot a list written by one of the shepherds on the walls) in retro style, with upcycled furniture, textiles and crockery. Everything is provided, from quality linens on a real bed to cosy heat from the woodburner, plus a kettle for that vital morning caffeine kick. The shepherd's hut also has its own toilet and shower in a hut just a few steps away. Outside is a private seating area overlooking the orchard, as well as a sheltered, raised decking at the front of the hut so you can sit back and take in the wonderful views of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the county’s highest hill, Brown Clee.

Shepherd's hut

Liked: Fantastic little hideaway, gorgeously decorated original Shepherd's hut, kitted out with all those little extras like homemade cake, homemade jam and fresh coffee on arrival that made for a perfect stay. Great, tranquil location and with local country pubs within a few miles. Colin and Kink could not have been more helpful, generous and lovely people, my only regret was that we hadn’t booked for a longer stay, next time is a must!

Local attractions

With its 10 industrial museums, reconstructed Victorian town with sweet shops, horse-and-cart rides and River Severn walks, Ironbridge Valley of Invention (40 minutes' drive) deserves a place near the top of your Shropshire must-do bucket. Ludlow (20 minutes) also rewards a visit, with its medieval centre and lanes lined with half-timbered houses. Have an amble around the 11th-century castle ruins, and then stroll along the River Teme to a waterside pub to sample some locally produced ciders. If you’re after hiking in some hills, you have the choice of challenging yomps in the Shropshire Hills AONB (10 minutes), or gentler rambles in Wyre Forest National Nature Reserve (25 minutes). Severn Valley Country Park (35 minutes) has way-marked trails for rambles and cyclists, and you can combine riverside walks among rare trees with cuddling friendly donkeys at Bodenham Arboretum (40 minutes). Alternatively, get your daily exercise on the golf course (20 minutes) or settle down for an afternoon coarse fishing for carp at Shatterford Lakes (35 minutes). Time to take the weight off your feet? Board the Severn Valley Railway at Bridgnorth (20 minutes) for a chug along the course of the river on a heritage steam train.
