General

  • Tents-only rural escape five minutes from Bishop's Castle
  • Walking, horse riding and mountain biking all nearby
  • Luxury shower block with hairdryers; campers' kitchen; firebowls

Do you feel in-tents about walking? How about wildlife watching, stargazing, mountain biking or horse riding, all in the splendid scenery of the Shropshire Hills? Pack up the canvas and come to do all this and more at tents-only .

You won't find tourer or motorhome pitches on this small family-run farm, but should locate quite a few things to tickle your camping fancy, from the luxury shower and loo block with hairdryers, to the campers' kitchen with hot water, fridge freezer, kettle, microwave and toaster, to the most excellent firebowls for guests' use, upcycled from old washing machine drums. And everything's free to use, because is just that type of site...

Middlebatch is a seventeenth century working farm in a wildlife, birdwatching and walking haven in the Shropshire Hills, five minutes from the friendly market town of Bishop's Castle, near Offa's Dyke Path, and in a prime and peaceful locale for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. There's no light pollution in these parts, so the area is a hit with stargazers too.

Run expertly by Mary, the site also has a large disabled-friendly and family shower room as well as recycling facilities and a full breakfast takeaway menu. We wood.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Excellent site with clean facilities, friendly hosts and good views 13/07/2017

Peaceful setting on small site in countryside with good shower block and kitchen facilities. Plenty of room as numbers limited. Friendly hosts who offer breakfasts or baps on request at reasonable prices. Fire pits for you to make fires - logs available at the farm. Good views of the countryside and swifts that are constantly darting around.

    Disliked:

Little bit of a yomp from Bishops Castle - about 1.5 miles but will keep you fit if you walk it (and you can drive anyway). I knew that before I booked so no complaint.

From the manager...

If you're looking for a simple campsite, with simply breathtaking views, you've found it! It might be just one field, but that means it's quiet, and the facilities are simply brilliant! Firepits are a great idea, even if the daytime temperatures reached 29 degrees! The kitchen is a stroke of genius; such a simple idea to give people some home comforts (or even just the ability to keep their food and drink cold). We booked for a Father's Day camping trip (which is becoming an annual event with friends) and booked ourselves brunch at a local cafe, however, had we known that Mary and Steve can provide a full English for campers too, we might have taken them up on that and continued to enjoy our view! We will be back, and will have the full English outside our tent! Simple but perfect!

    Disliked:

The site is on a hill, but the owners have done very well to flatten out pitches for camping. We have a large tent and still managed to be on the flat.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for writing this review, we are pleased you enjoyed your stay at our farm & enjoyed our facilities.
The breakfast menu is displayed on the notice board in the campers kitchen, maybe next time you come you can sample one of our lovely breakfasts.
Our campsite is on a hill that is why we have such lovely views, all 10 of our pitches are level, so there is no need for anyone to ever pitch on a slope.
We hope to see you again soon.

Fabulous little campsite. Perfect combination of small and friendly with fresh, modern facilities. Friendly hosts who think of lots of little things to make your stay that much better; a kettle, microwave, fridge/freezer are available for your use in the kitchen. Loved the recycled washing machine drum fire pits!

All in all, a fab little site in a beautiful, quiet location. I suspect we will return soon.

Would've liked a waste bin next to the sinks in the shower blocks but this is a very minor quibble.

From the manager...

Hi, thank you for your lovely review.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at Middle Woodbatch Farm.
We used to have a waste bin in the campers kitchen for food scraps etc.
We had to remove it as some campers stopped taking their rubbish to the other bins & it used to get filled up with all sorts of other waste that we had to spend time sorting through every day.
We hope to see you again in the future.

My first ever camping trip, arrived just after the bank holiday so it was very quiet. Very welcome owners, the shower and kitchen blocks were spotless and the bonus of a freezer to refreeze ice blocks before the next campsite

Fantastic views over the valley, a short drive or walkable into town for lunch.

A great proper working farm meaning plenty of activity going on giving a great sense of being in the countryside.

    Would definitely return!

We camped at the farm for a weekend in mid September when the campsite was very quiet but the weather was wonderful. It was very peaceful and a great location. The showers, toilets & kitchen facilities were spotlessly clean and plenty of hot water for showers & washing up. We walked to Bishops Castle along the lanes which took about 40 mins and plenty of cafes & pubs to eat at plus local shops. There are also lots of footpaths straight from the farm (alternative walk to Bishops Castle took about 2 hours). We happened to be staying the weekend of the Michaelmas Fair which we hadn't realised was on when booking, well worth visiting for the vintage cars, elephant parade, stalls & live music.

Local attractions

This is such an excellent area for all sorts of outdoor activities, and the views and scenery are pretty spectacular too…

is surrounded by an extensive network of footpaths and bridleways to wander and canter, and is close to Kerry Ridgeway, Offa's Dyke, the Jack Mytton Way, the B.C. Ring and the Long Mynd. The Shropshire Way and the Blue Remembered Hills bridleways pass through the farmyard.

Bishop's Castle, dating back to the eighth century and King Offa, is five minutes' drive or about 50 minutes' walk away: there's quite a bit to find out about local history in this locale and along Offa's Dyke, and these days the town has a busy market, large cattle and sheep market, and little shops along the high street selling local produce.

Church Stretton, Ludlow and Shrewsbury are all within easy reach, as are quite a few castles and quite a lot more splendid scenery. You could also take a look at Acton Scott Victorian Farm, Blists Hill Victorian Town, the hill of Stiperstones and the aircraft and exhibitions of the RAF base at Cosford.
