Camping field with pottery studio and artist pods

Camping field in use - early may

  • Family-run Oxfordshire site at a smallholding with art studios
  • Didcot and Wantage 10 minutes' drive; half an hour to Oxford
  • On the edge of the North Wessex Downs, with great walks nearby
We are a family run three acre smallholding hosting an Arts Studio running pottery classes and workshops. We have a level, grass covered paddock that is ideal for camping. It is served by a purpose-built toilet block with two toilets, one shower, a wash-room and a kitchenette. We are 3.5 miles from the Ridgeway - an ancient track that, to the West goes past the White Horse at Uffington and to the East links up with the Thames Path near Goring. The Ickneild Way - like the Ridgeway an ancient long distance track - has recently been resurfaced between East Hendred and Lockinge to provide an excellent cycle path from East Hendred to Wantage. Wantage is an historic market town and the birthplace of King Alfred the Great. It is the nearest town for a good selection of shops, supermarkets and a weekly open air market in the town square. Reachable by car and bicycle (and in some cases by foot) are some excellent places to eat and drink. Steventon is easily achieved by foot or bike, while the Hendreds, Ardington and Letcombe Regis are further afield.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Friendly welcome from our hosts, who couldn't have been more helpful, even giving a lift to the party we were attending in East Hendred.

Excellent fresh and clean facilities - the tea/coffee making facilities being particularly appreciated.

Level pitches, lots of trees, the call of green woodpeckers.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The size of the site is just right, the field is pitch perfect and you can park by the tent which is a big plus for us, the facilities are fantastic and super clean. Loved the honest shop, the kids got to see the chickens, there was a dog friendly walk righ there. You can hire a fire pit and buy coal and logs from the owner, don't forget the matches!

Disliked nothing!

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Level Pitches, clean washrooms and washing up area. Good access to national cycle network. Very quiet at night which we like!

If full I think would be stretched with only one shower but no problem while we were there.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked It was a really peaceful and well maintained campsite with lots of Birdlip. The little honesty shop and coffee machine were great.

Disliked Could potentially do with additional showers and toilets for busy times. The shower also needs an extractor fan because the walls were dripping in there.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Very much enjoyed 2 nights at this site. Great comms with the owner and very friendly. Loved the ‘honesty’ hut as mentioned so often in other reviews. Didn’t notice any particular road noise. We did a lovely 30 mins walk on the farm track to Steventon and had a nice lunch at the Cherry Tree pub. All in all I could not fault this site. Will definitely return.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location.

Disliked Not friendly landlord. We booked for 2 nights and we stayed only one. Fantastic place to walk your dog. Not great for children. The owner told me that he runs a trustee shop and he asked if I know the meaning of that! He made me and my kids not to feel welcomed. I won't recommended this place to any of my friends or family.

From the manager: We’re sorry you feel we deserve a 1 out of 10.
We greet campers at reception to introduce them to the campsite, so all campers get to know where everything is. We include the honesty shop (not trustee shop as you quoted) as part of this greeting to everyone. Some people do not know what an honesty shop is – hence why we introduce it. You took it as a personal affront for some reason when I asked you (like I would anyone else) if you know what an honesty shop is - we’ve never had this reaction from any camper before.
We think its unfair you said we dd not make you feel welcome. You arrived at the front door of our house (not the camping reception) at dusk, where you were greeted by the whole family with a "Hello, are you coming to camp, the weather is not on your side. Let’s go and get you settled".
We understand this was your first camping experience. We will try and help if we can, but you asked for several pieces of camping equipment that we just do not provide. Being prepared for camping in very wet weather is a must. We’re not surprised you decided to return home after one very wet night.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet campsite, well kept & clean with a lovely honesty shop including fresh eggs. Thank you!

Disliked Perhaps a little too closed to the road but it was perfect location for us to stop on the way to central London.

Did not use WiFi so cannot comment on it.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Washing up facilities, nice toilets/shower/washroom and honesty shop selling the essentials (including teas and coffees) makes it a relaxed camping experience. Plenty of space for each pitch and the size of the site means you never too far from the toilets. My daughter loved the chickens!

We wished we'd booked a longer stay.
