The Gate Hangs High: Aerial view of the site

General

  • Stays in the lush green grounds of a traditional Cotswolds inn
  • A five-minute drive to Hook Norton Brewery and 10 to Broughton Castle
  • Meals made with local ingredients served at the dog-friendly pub

Set your tent up in the grounds of a cracker of a Cotswolds inn with an intriguing name – The Gate Hangs High – for a hol exploring the gorgeous green hills and honey-coloured villages of an especially famed part of Oxfordshire.

This spot’s top for fans of both tradition and beer: every Friday (depending on the weather), the pub’s casks are delivered the old-school way by horse-drawn dray. And for more alcohol-related attractions, the well-known Hook Norton Brewery is a pleasant half-hour walk away; the space hosts tours and visitors can craft their own beer for special occasions (ask at The Gate about pre-booking your slot).

Drinks are, of course, also sorted back at the pub (open from 10am to 10pm seven days a week). Cosy up next to the inglenook fireplace with a glass of something chilled, or book a table in the restaurant section for a locally-sourced meal. The chef’s pies are said to be popular with the area’s residents and the inn welcomes dogs too – it keeps canines satisfied with dog treats available at the bar. On the social side, the pub hosts live music in the garden every Saturday night from 8pm till late, and also provides entertainment (DJs, comedy nights, wine tastings and the like) on some Friday nights.

As well as stunning views of the Cotswolds' hilly landscape, this place in Hook Norton also has essentials like a chemical disposal area and recycling facilities, plus an outdoor shower, toilets and sinks. A shop’s just down the road for gathering up supplies.

I had a basic and non-powered tent site behind the pub. Guests have access to toilet and shower facilities at the side of the hotel which again are basic but clean and functional with hot water. The standout feature is the pub itself. It's a friendly and cheerful place with good staff and great food. The location is good, a short drive to a number of local attractions such as the Hook Norton brewery. All things considered, it offers great value for money. I would certainly stay there again.

Site is a nice size. 6 electric pitches on a slight slope so take levelling ramps!
Friendly staff when you arrive- everything explained about the site and facilities. Lovely large beer gardens, very welcoming in the pub which serves excellent drink and home cooked food. Dog friendly.
Clean, but basic large shower room and toilet,at the side of the pub.
    Small toilet seperate.
Beautiful surrounding area with nice walks and bridleways. Hook Norton around 1 mile away.

    Disliked:

Skip & waste recycling yard on the other side of the trees which is quite noisy in the mornings- from 7:30 to around 1pm on Saturday- Quiet on Sunday as they don't open.
Grass in the main field could do with cutting.
Don't agree with the £5 per night charge for a dog

From the manager...

Thank you for your review,

The field is cut every week, anymore than that the traffic creates thin patches, when rains becomes mud.

regarding the cost for dogs, we have to go around a clean up after some. digging holes, need filling in, large sticks being left in the garden, that need picking up before mowing.. Dog mess some owners do not pick up. Ect all costs money

Quiet and friendly site, backs onto the field behind the pub, lovely mix of people staying the weekend, family’s with children who were kite flying, balloon flying and having lots of fun to a lovely group of lads camping and lots of very well behaved dogs on site as well, we had a lovely stay and an evening meal in the pub as well.
    We will definitely be back.

    Disliked:

The ground could be a bit more level, but it was dry so levelling the caravan wasn’t too bad, but I heard from someone else staying that the landlord is looking into this and having hard stand pitches so they can open all year round and he is also looking into upgrading the shower room and toilet, we did look in and it looked fine and would have had no problem using it, although we don’t need to use as we use our caravan.
Signage could be a little better but again I think this may be something else which is probably in the pipeline, we missed the recycling bins which were behind the normal bins in a wooden fenced off area.
