  • Stays in the lush green grounds of a traditional Cotswolds inn
  • A five-minute drive to Hook Norton Brewery and 10 to Broughton Castle
  • Meals made with local ingredients served at the dog-friendly pub
Set your tent up in the grounds of a cracker of a Cotswolds inn with an intriguing name – The Gate Hangs High – for a break exploring the gorgeous green hills and honey-coloured villages of an especially famed part of Oxfordshire. This spot’s brilliant for fans of both tradition and beer: every Friday (depending on the weather), the pub’s casks are delivered the old-school way by horse-drawn dray. And for more alcohol-related attractions, the well-known Hook Norton Brewery is a pleasant half-hour walk away; the space hosts tours and visitors can craft their own beer for special occasions (ask at The Gate about pre-booking your slot). Drinks are, of course, also sorted back at the pub. Cosy up next to the inglenook fireplace with a glass of something chilled, or book a table in the restaurant section for a locally sourced meal. The chef’s pies are said to be popular with the area’s residents and the inn welcomes dogs too – it keeps canines satisfied with dog treats available at the bar. As well as stunning views of the Cotswolds' hilly landscape, this place in Hook Norton also has essentials like a chemical disposal area and recycling facilities, plus an outdoor shower, toilets and sinks. A shop’s just down the road for gathering up supplies.

Local attractions

This part of the Cotswolds has ample attractions to visit, from stately homes to pretty villages, and is within reach of activities like golfing and horse riding as a course and stables are a five-minute drive away. Beat your travel partner during a round on the green, trot along bridleways in the pretty countryside, then seek out the area’s sights: landmarks like Broughton Castle and the Rollright Stones – three Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments – are accessible within 10 minutes. Fancy following in the footsteps of the aristocracy? Other renowned buildings in the area include Blenheim Palace (25 minutes), a massive country house owned by the Dukes of Marlborough, and there are cute cottages to check out in classic Cotswolds villages like Bourton-on-the-Water (half an hour). If you fancy having a gander at some prim and proper gardens, this region has manicured outdoor spaces by the dozen – get over to the grounds of the National Trust’s Hidcote Manor Gardens (35 minutes) or see animals ranging from meerkats to rhinos in the pristine parkland of the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (40 minutes).

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Warm friendly welcome on arrival
A choice of where to park up in the field behind the pub with electricity hook up
There is an outside toilet and shower room to use when the pub is shut which is ok ish
In the pub we had a lovely meal and dessert it’s like home made food with fresh vegetables, and of course a drink or 2 all the staff are warm and friendly and the locals too
Would definitely use as a stopover again good value for the money

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Very quiet, facilities were good (toilet/shower, drinking water, black water disposal) and had a nice field for the dog to sniff about in.

Disliked: We paid for electric hookup but the hookups were on an uneven grass field through a narrow gate. Decided not to risk it with our large 4-berth 7m motorhome and stayed in the car park instead. Still had a good night.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We loved this site. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. We were fortunate to get there early and get a flat pitch at the top of the field. Great views. Great location. Food in the pub was brilliant.

Disliked: Need a pot washing station. Some Non electric pitches were on a bit of a slope.
