  • Secluded riverside site 20 minutes' drive from Oxford
  • Wild camping, wild swimming and kayaking
  • Brazier, logs and welcome pack included: acclaimed farm produce to buy
Wild swimming in Oxfordshire… what a clever notion. D'Oyleys Farm is an excellent option if you’re visiting Oxford and want a bit of adventure along the way: this laidback place has a riverside setting, a wild camping vibe and the means for outdoor cooking and picnics at its lush little island. This is Boys’ – and Girls’ – Own Adventure stuff: the farm is in a secluded setting by the Thames, with pitch numbers carefully managed so that guests have loads of room and plenty of peace. There are four access points where you can plunge into the river for a spot of wild swimming – it's a little muddy in places (getting in and out is all about the sit and slide…) but it's fab for cooling off. There are also kayaks available to use for free – this isn't a hardcore training route though, more somewhere you can splash about and have fun with the kids. A highlight of the site is the little island, where the D'Oyleys Farm team has set up the ‘BBQ shack' with cooking facilities, woodburning stove, deck space and a campfire area, where you can sizzle up supper on your own woodfired cooking stove (brazier and hurricane lantern hire plus a bag of logs are all included in the pitch price). And another, also excellent, highlight? D'Oyleys is home to an acclaimed farm shop and prepares breakfast packs (bacon, sausages and eggs) and barbecue packs (lamb chops, chicken drumsticks, steaks and burgers) for guests, all home produced and all easily sorted by ordering before you arrive – use the details in your booking confirmation email. A welcome pack is included in the price too, with olive oil, toilet roll and other bits and pieces. When (if) you crave a bit of city life, Oxford is half an hour away by bus via the service running from the village 15 minutes’ stroll away, or about 20 minutes by car. The farm is four miles from Junction 7 of the M40, so it’s easy to get out and about from here by car too. The local pub (dog- and welly-friendly) is 15 minutes' walk away.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Just about everything. The location is beautiful. It's hard to believe it's so close to Oxford. The pitch sites are really big. We were on pitch B and could barely see the other pitches or hear anyone else who was camping on site. It feels very isolated. We loved hearing and watching birds, including owls, red kites and the many pheasants.

Disliked: It's definitely not a deal breaker, but obviously emptying the compost loos isn't a pleasant job. It's actually prety quick and easy. For me it's offset by the convenienceof having a loo on your own pitch, but it's important people know this is part of the deal before arriving!

The Coop cabin

Liked: The location - pitch space was massive, couldn't see neighbours from the coop, or hear them! Had our own access point to the River. Very peaceful and tranquil. I want to stay there every week! The river - instructions on how to get down to the River and where the deep spots were are documented in our accommodation. Water was mild. Didn't get bit by a mozzy! The owner - my booking was cancelled at short notice due to a glitch on the system. I spoke to Fiona who apologised, explained, and rectified the situation very quickly. Welcome email - had a useful list of everything we may need for our stay. Welcome pack - logs, firelighters, quality sponge, bin liners, washing up liquid all included. The coop aslos had most utensils (except a spatula) and tea bags! Neighbours- the other campers were very friendly and polite. The map - there is a map at the farm showing where to go. You need to go offroading to get to the campsite. Easy to navigate. Would be helpful for the map to be attached to the welcome email. The checkout time - 12pm. Footpaths to the pub Kid friendly - kayaks, rope swings, the plot on the coop had a gate which can shut to stop kids running in the river.

Disliked: That my original booking was double booked! Farm shop - we were excited to bring some meat home on Saturday. Website states the shop is open Saturdays. But when we arrived it was closed with a sign saying "click and collect only". Would be helpful to have that info before hand so we could preorder. Locating the kayaks - it wasn't clear where the kayaks lived. We called the landline on farm website and left a message. In the end we went on a mini adventure and found them ourselves. They are located in the holt. The kayaks- we did have so much fun with these. But they are small! I think for children. We struggled getting in and out of them. Emptying the compost loo - but it is a sacrifice I am willing to make as the stay was wonderful.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Very pretty spot, and the farm is very welcoming -- Fiona rode her horse down to say hello and they leave out a useful box of firelighters, wood, washing up liquid, etc, for your arrival. Pitches well spaced -- we couldn't hear the lads in the pitch down the field from us even though we discovered they were playing music when we walked past. There is a wonderful spot by the river with kayaks, a rope swing, a ladder into a tree, etc., and a great cabin set up for rainy days. The compost loos were clean and a good system.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Peaceful, great walks and the river is perfect. Don’t want too put this in the dislike section but if it was my site, I would trim back the bushes/brambles in a very small area next to ALL pitches so river access and views can be had from each pitch. Certainly not a dislike though, more of a “would” like. Great location, very dark at night, stars were amazing, not used to that living in London. Weather was perfect. Thanks

Disliked: Nothing really, if I had to be fussy I would say pitch E was a little too close to F but definitely didn’t ruin the weekend. Didn’t hear our neighbours but would of been nice if we couldn’t see them either.

The Coop cabin

Liked: We had a wonderful time staying in the Coop. Lovely off grid cabin. Simple but cosy. Beautiful location by the river. We loved swimming every day and it was very peaceful and relaxing.Especially in the evening sitting by the firepit listening to owls and the sounds of the river. We don't drive and it was very easy to get to the farm by bus from Oxford. There is also a lovely walk into the village along the public footpath.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. Sorry i only got to meet one of you but really happy that you had a relaxing time undisturbed and back to nature - the way we like it. Look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

Non-electric grass and earth tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch (wild)

Liked: Lovely and spacious with fire pit. Own toilets were a great idea. Lovely and friendly owners. Amazing campsite for people that like a quiet and very rural experience. Great location for surrounding area. Handy for park and ride into Oxford. Also we also got a train into London which worked really well.

Disliked: Nothing really just a great wild campsite.
