Switch between the pedestrianised alleys of the ‘city of dreaming spires’ and the mellow hills and countryside tea rooms of the Cotswolds… all on the same day if you wish. Set your base in Greenhill Leisure Park, a family-run and adults-only farm site surrounded by the Oxfordshire countryside in Bletchingdon, within 25 minutes' drive of Oxford and an hour from the Cotswolds National Landscape. There are certainly no shortages of countryside pursuits on hand, with three fishing lakes on site stocked with carp or coarse fish, and a nice selection of countryside rambles or woodland walks from the site. Where to start, with 270 acres to explore? Well, first settle in on the well-maintained pitches. Next, head to the carp fishing lake for a test of strength… the biggest fish weigh up to a hefty 30lbs. Other facilities include a toilet block, launderette and washing-up facilities. There’s a dedicated grassy area for dogs to stretch their legs, if you’ve brought a canine friend along for the ride too.

Disliked We couldn't stay as it is now adults only, last time we visited children were welcome, their website wasn't working so they suggested we book via pitchup and we missed the small print that said this.

Liked The location for Blenheim palace and visiting Oxford was good. The pitch was pleasant and spacious. There were plenty of the usual facilities available for camping for the number of people including toilets, showers, washing up sinks and very hot water. They were clean enough. Dogs were very well catered for with walks including a large secure field to run off lead. It was quiet and our fellow campers were friendly and respectful. We arrived after reception was closed but were emailed with instructions where to find our pitch. The “building site” is tidy and wasn’t noisy. It looks like the site has a lot of potential and is undergoing a transition period. We didn’t miss the closed down cafe, bar and shop while this is going on. There’s an “open all hours” co-op in the village.

Disliked I wish there was still a pub open within easy walking distance. Both seem to have closed over the past couple of years. There was a whiff of drains in certain places but I expect there will be some upgrading and maintenance soon for that.

Liked Pitch was a good size with electric hookup. Water not far away.
Beautiful tree lined drive and nice welcome on arrival.

Disliked A lot of building work going on so constant noise until 6.00pm which was disturbing. After 6.00pm lovely and peaceful evening with wildlife. I imagine that once the building work finishes this will be a lovely peaceful site in the future.

Liked Clean toilet block. Helpful reception staff although construction staff were not.

Disliked We were shocked when we arrived at the changes to what used to be a beautiful and peaceful site. It is now basically a pretty big building site all over what were the biggest fields with a few remaining pitches for tourers. Noisy building work started before 7am on some days we were there and carried on until 6pm every day with no let up. Construction vehicles are regularly coming and going. The site bears no resemblance to what is advertised on the Internet(and what was there last year), the shop, cafe, one of the toilet blocks and the main access to the river are all gone. We returned to this site to get some respite from living near HS2 construction and found ourselves right back in the same relentless disturbance. It is no longer a great place to stay.

Liked Nothing. Never actually got to stay.

Disliked My booking was cancelled due to the site converting to be adult only, but I was only contacted to refund my payment the day before I was due to travel with my child for our summer trip to celebrate finishing school. No adequate explanation offered for why such a change might be made mid season when bookings had already been taken and paid for.

Woodland walking is on the cards at Island Pond Wood (20 minutes' drive). Don’t worry, you won’t find a crocodile here… but you may spot more than one or two at Crocodiles of the World (25 minutes). Keep your eyes peeled for more wildlife, including red kites and Duke of Burgundy butterflies, in the ancient woodlands and valleys of Chiltern Hills (45 minutes). Next, go where the fashionable people used to congregate, at the historic house and gardens of Blenheim Palace (five minutes) or Waddesdon Manor (35 minutes). At Bicester Heritage (15 minutes), you can delve into a different history, this time of motoring. Or look into the city of Oxford (25 minutes), where grand libraries and cathedrals stand tall. The same Jurassic limestone that forms the hilly walking district of the Cotswolds (an hour) is on show at the ancient stone circle of the Rollright Stones (25 minutes), another old site to add to the trip’s must-visit list.
