  • Small, family-friendly site on the northeast side of the Cotswolds
  • On a smallholding with animals; Moreton-in-Marsh 15 minutes’ drive
  • Spacious, mown meadow pitches with firepits for alfresco cooking
Crushing on the idea of a Cotswolds getaway, and keen to stay somewhere small and rural? Windrush Camping has you sorted. It's a small, family-friendly site on a 50-acre smallholding on the northeast finger of the Cotswolds National Park. Many animals consider this place home, including a brood of chickens that pop out fresh eggs for guests to fry and a small flock of Herdwick sheep (with lambs in season). Early risers here may spot the resident cats, Smidge and Thomas, hunting in the grass or birds of prey gliding overhead. Simplicity is key here, and that applies both to the facilities – composting toilets, a shower and washing-up facilities – and the pitches, which are generously spaced out in a meadow. They're joined up by mown pathways in the long grass and wildflowers, where kids may feel like they’ve entered a labyrinth of sorts. At each pitch is a private firepit for alfresco cooking and eves around the fire. At some point in the evening, you’ll want to put that fire out and turn your attention to the sky, as the peaceful site has virtually no light pollution. In the daytime, busy yourself with tracking down stunning Cotswolds walking routes – the hosts have local recommendations ready, so don't be shy about asking – before grabbing a cider and a meal back at the riverside beer garden at the local pub, 15 minutes’ walk away. The Cotswolds Distillery Visitor Centre is also half an hour’s walk away. After a drink or two, lean back and relax at the site’s communal seating area.

Local attractions

The towns of the Cotswolds have quite a reputation for being pretty and nice to potter around. Moreton-in-Marsh (15 minutes’ drive) has an open-air market every Tuesday. Outside of those hours, busy yourself with browsing the shops, cafés, delis and old pubs set within the Cotswolds stone buildings (from the 17th and 18th centuries). Stow-on-the-Wold (25 minutes) is another Cotswolds market town, this time up on a hill. Its Market Square used to be a location for selling sheep in medieval times; they were then shepherded down the narrow alleyways, called “tures”. Nowadays, down those alleys, there are modern shops, but there’s still a pub that’s been open since the 10th century and a medieval church to see. Tick off some more Classic Cotswolds locations while you're in the area, too. One of those is The Rollright Stones (15 minutes), limestone monuments that have survived from the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Chastleton House (20 minutes), a Jacobean country house, is also nearby and still in the same shape as it was 400 years ago.
