  • Family-run dog-friendly farm site in Cropredy village
  • A 20-minute drive to British Motor Museum; 40 mins to Blenheim Palace
  • Wood-fired pizzas on busy weekends; a short walk to pubs and cafés
Fancy a farm stay, but not so keen on the idea of navigating little country lanes? Set off to Oxfordshire and The Old Dairy Farm Caravan and Camping: getting here involves a mere 10-minute detour from the M40 at Banbury. That location makes this a most handy spot for motorway stopovers, but there’s plenty around to please those who choose to stay longer too. However long you stay at this family-run farm, you’ll not want to miss out on meeting the pygmy goats and free-range chickens and peering into the aviary; once the kids have done that, send them off for a proper run about on the large recreational field to tire them out before bedtime. Handy too are the smart and well-maintained facilities, including a toilet block, showers, a washing-up area, water supply and Elsan point. The wood-fired pizza oven gets going on busy weekends (and it’s also available for private hire if you’re having a gathering). Don’t worry if there’s no pizza action while you’re here: it’ll take just a few minutes to walk to Cropredy’s pubs, cafés and shop (or its play park). It’s also possible to walk to the Oxford Canal and River Cherwell for waterside wanders, and a short drive will get you out into the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty for more walks, plus golf courses, fishing lakes and National Trust estates. In the main this is a peaceful site, but it's worth noting that a rail line passes fairly close by so you may hear a bit of noise from the pitches (or even spot trains – much to the delight of young rail enthusiasts).

Liked: It’s was a well maintained site, clean facilities and a shop. Hot food is served from 5, didn’t try it but it seemed reasonable priced. Would definitely recommend with kids as there’s a nice play area, and some animals on site. Also a bouncy castle but not sure if that’s there all the time.

Disliked: There was no hot water and no lighting

Liked: Just got home from staying at The Old Dairy Farm for the second time. Brilliant little site, very friendly staff…was made to feel very welcome from the moment we arrived. Goats, park, football goal and bouncy castle were all a huge hit with the kids. Relaxed safe and friendly atmosphere was a big benefit for my as a single parent with 4 young children. Will certainly be going there again. Just hope that it will be 3rd time luck to be able to see the Birds.

Liked: Loved the park, goats, birds, bouncy castle. Our hook up pitch had a drinking water tap and grey water drain built in. Very handy

Disliked: Elsan point needs a hose on the water point. Laundrette would be good too.

10-amp electric grass pitch

Liked: This is a great site for families. There's an excellent play area (with bouncy castle!), falcon centre, goats etc. Good location too. In the middle of the countryside, but lots of good walks & bike rides nearby. There is a very relaxed feel to the campsite. Hot food is available to buy at least on some evenings.

Disliked: The relaxed atmosphere meant that some of the admin was very lax. We weren't sure which plot to use on arrival, and even the next day it wasn't clear if we were on the right pitch or not. Reception is not open very much, so not easy to sort out any issues.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Good location, lots to do locally and we highly recommend the Brasenose Arms pub in the village, which you can walk to in about 10ish minutes. The toilets were decent and cleaned regularly, and the shower facilities were ok - the water pressure was great and as they’re electric you don’t have to worry about running out of hot water, but a couple of the shower cubicles were flooded both mornings of our stay. We loved that there were goats on site - a hit with the young and old! And the children’s play area looked quite good too.

Disliked: Other campers really let this site down. Loud music and laughing at 2am! One of our party went over at 1.30am to ask them to turn it off as we had a 1 year old who we were desperately trying to get back to sleep. It went off for about 2 minutes and then back on again just as loud. It was only when I put the screaming baby in the car and drove home to sleep that they were quiet. The next day another family arrived and set up the other side of us, and the adults were swearing a lot and playing quite loud music (but this was much earlier in the evening). I understand that the management has little control over these situations, but it felt like an indication of the type of visitors they get. The nail in the coffin for me was the arrival of an ice cream van at 7.30pm mid way through the bed time routine. Don’t get me wrong, I not against ice cream vans in general, but 7.30pm is just a joke. What parent wants to load their children with that amount of sugar just before bed?! And the baby was almost asleep when the ice cream van played his tune very loudly right outside the tent. Delayed my evening glass of wine by at least 30 minutes. There’s also a railway line close by with freight trains running throughout the night. Not a deal breaker, but when you add it to the other noise challenges, it was a bit frustrating. Nice site - just not necessarily the best site for young families.

Local attractions

Coming to the Cotswolds for a bit of fresh air and gentle activity? Set forth for fishing at Clattercote Reservoir, or tee off at Cherwell Edge Golf Course; both are about 10 minutes away by car. Country walking routes are plentiful too, of course, as are fine buildings to mooch around. Blenheim Palace (40 minutes’ drive) is perhaps the best known of all the Oxfordshire stately homes (and with good reason, for ’tis fab) but it’s worth taking a look at some others too, including Farnborough Hall (10 minutes), Sulgrave Manor (20 minutes) and Upton House and Gardens (20 minutes). For a break from the classic Cotswolds activities, head out to meet the big birds of Fir Tree Falconry (15 minutes) or sigh over all the shiny machines at the British Motor Museum (20 minutes). And if you’re in need of a tipple or two to accompany your barbecue back at base, there are some excellent local ones to be acquired at Hook Norton Brewery (25 minutes) and the Cotswolds Distillery (half an hour).
