General

  • Laidback farm glamping on the edge of the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Bampton; Oxford 25 minutes
  • Tastefully furnished bell tents with outdoor cooking area and firepit

What does the discerning traveller look for in a glamping site? While there are no set rules, it's fair to say that an attractive farm location with rural scenery and accommodation with views overlooking water are all highly prized. All of these attributes can be found in one place at Camping Westmoor Farm, a peaceful Oxfordshire site close to the edge of the Cotswolds.

Camping Westmoor Farm's modern and spacious bell tents are hidden away between a pool, woodlands and farmland roughly a mile outside of the village of Bampton, where there's a pub, coffee shop, small supermarket and post office.

The tents come fully-furnished, meaning this attractive setting is matched by equally enticing interiors. In terms of practicalities, guests here get access to well-maintained, eco-friendly toilets and showers, plus a handy camping kit containing cooking equipment (but please remember to bring your own bedding). Kids, meanwhile, have an outdoor play area and go-karts for burning off excess energy.

The site is about a mile north of the River Thames, which can be crossed by road at Tadpole Bridge, home to a very popular pub. Wandering westwards along the river, you'll soon reach Chimney Meadows National Nature Reserve, while the pretty old village of Radcot is a similar distance away to the east.

The park was great, children enjoyed it. We got upgraded to the cabin which was beautiful. The area was incredible, beautiful nature. Very quiet and lots of space to explore.

    Disliked:

The only thing would be the toilets, I understand why they are nature toilets, but it was a little too scary for me.

The bell tents and fire pit, plus the fridge freezer with ice blocks.

We are very seasoned campers and were excited to visit Westmore Farm. However I’m sorry to say we were very disappointed and would not recommend the site to anyone. We were greeted by a voice on an intercom at the locked gate, and never saw a single member of staff for three days.
The compostable toilets are ramshackle to say the least (rain pouring through the ceiling, holes in the walls showing you the next door cubicle)
The *ONE* shower was not used by any of us, the door didn’t lock and you could see straight into it from outside.
The play equipment was unsafe, as is not anchored down to the ground. It has the potential to be really great but it’s not quite there yet.

Playground equipment was very unsafe. Only one shower for the whole site that didn’t even work well. No lights in the toilets. Only one washing up sink but with no hot water. Cooking stove only has one side working and this was for 5 bell tents. No staff onsite all weekend, no reception area. Very disappointed.

A lovely friendly site. The place to go if you like a quiet escape. Great eco friendly facilities. The owner was very friendly and helpful. Our kids liked the play park, which is positioned well with a good view from the vast majority of pitches. The section of the site where our bell tent was, had a camping cooker and a gas bbq under a small shelter for campers use. A cooking pack is available to hire, making it easier to travel light. Campfires are welcomed, you can buy firewood from the owner or he is happy for you to forage for your own.

We liked the play area for kids, the rural location, the campsite set up and the camping kit provided in the Bell Tents. Ronald was very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. It's still very much a work in progress and for some honest feedback they could do with a sluice for campers toilets and a biffa bin. But we were pointed in the direction of a man hole cover to empty the loo and they did bring out a wheelie bin for rubbish. Fire pits are provided and you can buy logs on site. If you don't have your own gas stove, then these are provided along with a gas BBQ on site which was great thinking. The Bell tent we stayed in was very comfortable and had some great décor. We were very happy with the site and may look at one of the lodges next time. Only other suggestion is to ensure that the children's play area is secure and only for children's games. The only reason I say this is that some adults came to play a game in the kids play area and let's just say their choice of language was not fitting for children to hear. No problems with adults having their fun obviously, but perhaps they can have a separate area?

    Disliked:

The showers... They are eco friendly but somewhat exposed and I'm not sure the hot water supply / solar heating is up to the amount of people wanting to use it..

We had such a wonderful time at Westmoor Farm! The bell tents were gorgeous and set up so well, the facilities were great (everything we would have needed) and the welcome and help from Ronald was so kind. Would thoroughly recommend a stay in the bell tents! Walking distance to the Thames, a fantastic pub and an easy drive to many pretty villages.

Local attractions

TV buffs may recognise some of Bampton's streets (five minutes' drive), as this location was used to shoot village scenes in Downton Abbey – serious fans of the series could also drive south to Highclere Castle (45 minutes), whose imposing architecture and gorgeous gardens appeared in pretty much every episode. Similarly grand surrounds are also on display at Buscot Park (15 minutes) and Blenheim Palace (35 minutes).

Heading west into the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (15 minutes) is another bright idea – you have the choice between traditional market towns like Stow-on-the-Wold (30 minutes), zoos like Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (15 minutes) and Crocodiles of the World (20 minutes) or the fab foliage at The National Arboretum in Westonbirt (an hour).

To the east, Oxford (25 minutes) has illustrious seats of learning – including Christ Church and Magdalen College, which are both particularly scenic – plus world class museums and vantage points like Carfax Tower and St Mary's Church where you can admire the splendid cityscape below. There's also ample scope for punting yourself up and down the river or taking a gentle boat cruise on the Thames.
