  • Quiet Nottinghamshire site overlooking a network of peaceful lakes
  • A 15-minute drive/20-minute bus ride from Nottingham city centre
  • Fishing on site; a short walk to Holme Pierrepont watersports centre
Wildlife and watersports in one location? If that sounds like a wonderful mix, nip off to Nottinghamshire and a stay at Copper Fox Camping. This welcoming site is a mere 15 minutes’ drive from central Nottingham – not that you’ll notice the city’s proximity when you’ve settled into one of these peaceful pitches. As the name suggests, this site is centred around its lakes, which provide an attractive backdrop to the pitches as well as the two largest being well stocked with carp, perch, chub and roach for anglers. Day tickets and night fishing sessions are bookable on site. Alternatively, of course, you could simply admire the watery views from your pitch, perhaps grabbing a couple of drinks or getting your barbecue going to provide sustenance while you soak up this serene atmosphere. This is a popular spot for wildlife too, with the Skylarks Nature Reserve next door being a good place to wander along the trails to see what you can see. From here it’s also just a few minutes’ walk to the National Water Sports Centre and Holme Pierrepont Country Park, where you can try out whitewater rafting, paddleboarding and kayaking or hit the treetop trails, adventure playground and miniature golf in the Outdoor Adventure Zone. Walks along the banks of the River Trent are also very close by, or you can stroll to the village of Radcliffe on Trent in about half an hour for food and drinks in one of its excellent pubs.

This is a back-to-basics campsite located by a lake, offering peaceful stays with lovely views and abundant wildlife. Guests appreciate the spacious pitches and the natural surroundings. While initial reviews mention limited facilities, a new toilet and shower block has been progressively built and is now operational and praised for its cleanliness. Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The view of lake

Disliked There was some big groups of foreign tourists that were noisy and had a fire pit going, with the grass being so dry it wasn’t a great idea, not enough loos and was a walk to them . I was also surprised that nobody checked you in

Liked Such a great campsite!

We really enjoyed our long weekend at Copper Fox!

It was quite busy when we arrived on the Friday evening, but the fishing bailiff showed us a good place to pitch and was really welcoming (there is no reception, you just make yourself known to the bailiff on arrival, or that's what we did anyway)

This is a basic campsite, but that's what makes it so great in our opinion. There's a small toilet block with two toilets, and they were finishing the showers while we were there - I'm sure we were first to use one of them- what a claim lol!

There's also a freshwater tap next to the toilet block, but no elsan point in case you're wondering, so we didn't bother using our camper toilet - the ones in the block were great anyway. They've been done to a really high standard, as have the showers. They were always clean and well-stocked with toilet paper and soap.

There is no washing up area in case that sort of thing bothers you - we've got a sink in the camper, so wouldn't have used it anyway.

Loved the proximity to the lakes. One is for the anglers, and the other you could swim in and paddleboard/kayak, etc. It was absolutely wonderful! There were a few colder bits where it was a bit deeper, but the temperature was gorgeous this time of year (August heatwave)

We were a bit further back nearer the anglers, so it was quieter where we were, however, I didn't notice much noise after say 11pm (although we were asleep by then each night, so presume it must have been quiet!)

Would definitely come back!

Disliked Nothing
My only suggestion would be to put a hook on the door in the shower rooms - everything else was brilliant

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback.

We're sorry you found it noisy. We do offer a quiet area for those who want it — simply request it and we'll book you in there.

Just to be clear: this area is further from the toilets and showers — that's exactly why it's quieter!

Next time, just let us know and we'll get you in the right spot.

Liked Great location next to a lake.

Disliked Only two (very clean) toilets but looked like they were building more... lots of helicopters at night as it's next to Nottingham airport.

Local attractions

Copper Fox Camping is a great location for a break that mixes up countryside and city – as well as fishing on site and outdoor activities at Holme Pierrepont Country Park you may like to play a round at Radcliffe-on-Trent Golf Club (10 minutes’ drive) or take a vineyard tour at Wolds Wine Estate (20 minutes). There are several grand buildings dotted around too, including Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deer Park (25 minutes) and Belvoir Castle (half an hour), plus family attractions like Floralands Farm Park (half an hour). Sports fans may also like to see if they can catch some actions at Nottingham Forest’s City Ground or the Trent Bridge Cricket Ground (both 10 minutes). For some city time, board one of the regular bus services to Nottingham to see the castle, the National Justice Museum and Nottingham Industrial Museum. Also don’t miss the chance to go beneath the city’s streets at City of Caves, a surprisingly large network that’s been in use since Anglo-Saxon times.
