  • Off-grid Northamptonshire site 10 minutes’ drive from Daventry
  • Silverstone and Althorp Estate both 20 minutes’ drive
  • Easy access from the M1; canal and woodland walks close by
Craving that feeling of being in the middle of nowhere… but also kind of keen to be close to local amenities? The answer lies at AllThings Camping, a quiet place that’s tucked away in the Northamptonshire countryside but also well placed for lots of handy infrastructure. At this laidback off-grid site, you’ll be staying in a peaceful seven-acre field with simple facilities including a shower and a couple of compost toilets. There’s also a shared mess tent with some basic kitchen kit (including a kettle and some tea and coffee supplies) and seating for those times when you need somewhere weatherproof to relax. Coffee and cakes are available on site during the school holidays and the big Silverstone weekend (the famed circuit is a 20-minute drive away). The vibe here is super chilled, with kids and dogs welcome, plenty of space to relax and low levels of light pollution often leading to some pretty good stargazing. Nearby, you’ll be able to walk in the woods or along the canal (five minutes’ drive). Shops, cafés, boat rentals and river swimming spots are also a few minutes’ drive away, and there’s a Roman fort about a mile away. So far, so rural… but in fact there are plenty of useful facilities nearby, either in the nearby village of Nether Heyford (five minutes) or in bigger towns like Daventry (10 minutes) and Northampton (20 minutes). AllThings Camping is also very handy for the M1, as it’s only about 10 minutes’ drive from Junction 15.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The view, and accessibility, This campsite has the off grid feel but is only 5 minutes away from a well stocked village shop. The owner Libby is lovely and just wants to share her land and allow people to enjoy fresh air and space. I went for one night with my son and we had a lovely time. The toilets are clean and well maintained but we didn’t try the shower. I know she is trying to sort the leaky water pipe but we had no issues washing up. She even said we can book for a day trip and it’s dog friendly It is quite hard to find a nice place to do a family BBQ or just allow kids to roam free or kick a ball around but this is our go to place now.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We arrived and were the only people there. The campsite was very relaxed and whilst not the most level of fields, we found a suitable pitch (using wedges for the campervan). The campsite owner gave us plenty of time to set up an get the BBQ out before walking over to welcome us and tell us how to turn on the hot water for the shower. Lovely lady to chat to, and definitely 'feels' camping, rather than just owning a campsite. Only one other camper turned up during our visit, a chilly October weekend, and me, the boy and the dog really enjoyed the space. BBQ, campfire, fresh air, rabbits and lots of room, we'll be visiting again sometime.

Disliked If I had to be picky, the campsite has two minor country roads on two of its sides, but I heard no traffic at night or early morning.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou and in response to the picky comment, eventually there will be thicker hedging, just waiting for some of it to grow in

Overall the campsite was in a great location for walks and pubs.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The freedom of picking our own space and the campsite felt like the closest thing possible to wild camping. Libby was also very welcoming and friendly upon arrival.

Disliked Nothing to pick up on, the camping field was basic but it's what we were after so not really a negative for us.

Local attractions

If you’re into all things royal, you might want to take a pilgrimage to the Althorp Estate (20 minutes’ drive), the centuries-old home of the Spencer family. Spencer as in ‘Diana Spencer’. Lady Diana, the late, much-loved Princess of Wales, is buried on a private island on the estate, but it’s possible to visit a memorial dedicated to her, in a peaceful spot surrounded by leafy vegetation and free-roaming peacocks. National Trust - Stowe Gardens (half an hour) features a vast area of parkland designed by Capability Brown, plus manicured gardens dotted with follies and monuments such as the Temple of British Worthies, a semi-circular structure paying homage to key figures such as Queen Elizabeth I, Shakespeare and Sir Isaac Newton. Put your code-breaking head on and visit the complex at Bletchley Park (35 minutes), which was an intelligence hub during World War II, with mathematicians like Alan Turing trying to decode the enemy’s encrypted messages. Exhibitions are spread out over multiple huts.
