  • Simple rural campsite set in the heart of the Lincolnshire Wolds
  • A 30-minute drive to Skegness; 45 minutes to Fantasy Island
  • Peaceful pitches on a working farm; free firepits to borrow
Tucked into secluded fields in the spectacular Lincolnshire Wolds, no-frills Oxcombe Campsite is a dog-friendly spot and haven for outdoor-loving families. It’s on a working farm with grazing cattle in surrounding fields, so while your dogs are welcome, please keep them under control. This is a simple site with peaceful rural views over All Saints Church in Oxcombe – and yet it’s also close to handy things like farm shops, market towns Louth and Horncastle, and plenty of pubs within a five-minute drive. It’s a short car journey to Skegness if you fancy a night out, and there are adventure parks, stately mansions and golf courses close by too – in short, plenty to keep all the family entertained. If you’re keen to get and about in nature, you’re also in the right spot. Cyclists and walkers, follow a bridle path from the farm and jump on the challenging Viking Way, while there are easier strolls along Lincoln-Washingbrough Tow Path. You can also get out in the bracing sea air and play hide-and-seek with the kids among sand dunes at Moggs Eye and Gibraltar Point beaches. Once back at base, you could learn to throw pots at Oxcombe Pottery. Otherwise, the handful of facilities at this simple rural site include showers and loos in the toilet block, use of an indoor communal area plus a washing machine and tumble dryer (detergent is provided). A small number of communal firepits are available to borrow free of charge and you can also buy sacks of logs (with kindling and firestarters) on site. Open fires are not permitted but you're welcome to bring gas stoves or disposable barbecues along.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Another brilliant stay at Oxcombe! Lovely walk around all saints church and enjoying the gardens.

Disliked: The only downside this year was the fact that people were arriving late and cars were on and off pitches at 9/10pm. Not ideal when kids are in bed.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: This is our favourite site on which to camp, and because it is so tranquil, even our (near) teenager doesn’t moan, which many know would be a blessing. As it is a working farm, small animals such as chickens roam, and this time the Pea Hen had 6 chicks with her; such beauty! The Oxcombe site has a tiny magnificent church and graveyard, along with fruit trees and a welcome shelter which has a kettle, fridge and WIFI, usable for all guests. Two showers are an added bonus. The small field allows for around 15 pitches and has a limited number of fire pits for hire. Our 12-year-old said ‘this is the best place I’ve ever been’. What a shock! We adore it here and foresee we will be back many times in years to come.

Disliked: No dislikes at all, but some should be aware of animal sounds emanating from the working farm, as well as nature itself; bulls, cows, roosters, wood pigeons, owls, etc. sing and call through the night. Two toilets demand small queues at expected times, so best to plan for off-peak relief!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: It was an absolutely beautiful site with great views. Quiet and relaxing. I liked the fact it was tents only. There were lots of lovely places to walk and a lovely pub in Belchford which does food. The nearest town, Horncastle, is very pretty and has a lovely selection of shops.

Disliked: It could do with more toilets and an area specifically for washing up. I wasn't keen on washing up in the toilet/shower area.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Everything! The views were stunning, the facilities were very unique which we loved! There’s fruit trees all around you which just creates such an amazing space. There’s a communal area called the ‘cow shed’ where you can prep food, make coffees and sit and meet new people which we loved! We just adored this little hidden gem of a campsite!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great location (horncastle nearby for lovely restaurants and pubs) also near shops. Lovely walks nearby too! Campsite is quiet and in a beautiful setting. Toilets and showers clean and nice to use, washing up area also really lovely. We really enjoyed our time here!

Disliked: Nothing really. We didn’t see the owners at all which wasn’t a problem for us as we found the toilets/showers easy enough and liked the flexibility of being able to check in at any time.

Local attractions

For kids, the first port of call may well be thrill rides at Fantasy Island (45 minutes’ drive). There are plenty of animal encounters to be had too, with lions, tigers and bears at the Lincolnshire and Wolds wildlife parks (15 and 40 minutes respectively), or gentle Shires to pat at Northcote Heavy Horse Centre (30 minutes). If that lot doesn’t wear them out, take a stroll along the sea shore at Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (40 minutes). As well as outdoor activities, you’ve got plenty of history locally too. Gothic-era Lincoln Cathedral (45 minutes) was once the tallest building in the country, and the walled gardens at 18th-century Gunby Estate, Hall and Gardens (half an hour) are ablaze with wild flowers in spring. Still on the cultural theme, you might like to browse antiques shops in the historic market towns of Horncastle (15 minutes) and Louth (20 minutes), or see a film at the Kinema in the Woods (30 minutes) in a former farm building.
