  • Peaceful pitches in a two-acre field behind a traditional village inn
  • Half an hour's drive to Rutland Water and Burghley House
  • Dog-friendly pub with real ales, good food and beer garden
If you’ve ever found yourselves quibbling about whose turn it is to drive for an evening out, here’s a fine idea for you: make it no one’s turn by pitching up right behind The Wishing Well Inn, a country pub in the Lincolnshire village of Dyke five minutes’ drive north of Bourne. No such debate needs to happen while you’re staying here, as your journey from pub to pitch involves just a couple of minutes’ stroll to the two-acre grass area just behind the beer garden. And a lovely pub it is too: a traditional country inn dating back more than 300 years, with beams and woodburning stove inside and a sizeable garden area with covered and open seating areas. Dogs and kids are most welcome in the pub, which serves up a seasonal menu of British pub classic meals (made with local produce where possible) alongside local beers and a good range of other drinks. Once you’re ready for a bit of sleep, wander back to your pitch, where drinking water and chemical disposal are available (and you can come back to the pub toilets for your ablutions). And how to work up an appetite for the food and drinks in the pub? Well, The Wishing Well makes a great base for days of rural walks, horse riding or watersports, or you could take day trips to the likes of Burghley House, Peterborough Cathedral, Grimsthorpe Castle and the historic streets of Stamford.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The Wishing Well Inn was a very welcoming cosy pub and restaurant. The staff and local customers were very friendly. Due to the heavy rain it was flooded along the road outside and the pitches were very water logged. Fortunately, there was a hard standing just behind the car park and we are able to pitch there. Overall, a very comfortable stay.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Inside the Pub was nice

Disliked: Where do you want me to start. The grass was 8 inches long. When we tried to use the power there was none. Tried 4 different outlets and none of them worked. By the time I tried to hook up the electricity the pub was closed and there was nobody to help. We paid good money to park in a damn paddock.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Pub food, perfect. Lovely meals.

Disliked: No fresh water on site, only at the pub and needed a top up, so had to use watering cans. Also grass isn't cut regularly, so quite long. Allowing midges and flies to nestle in, bitten quite badly. Also the £30 per night we felt was quite expensive considering the above problems. No grey waste disposal, also no rubbish bins on site, except at the pub. Also don't use the LHS electric hookups, as they keep tripping out.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Pub was lovely. Hosts were lovely. Food was lovely. Nice and level ground. Easy to access. Quiet. Plenty of space.

Disliked: Loo was a bit scruffy, no one had emptied the hand towl bin for a while. No water. No showers etc. Bit pricey for just a pitch, but then every business is struggling financially at the moment aren't they. I'd rather pay extra to see a business keep open.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Great pub with very polite and friendly staff and great service. We had a lovely meal and although not cheap, it was excellent, so value for the price paid. It doesn't have a large menu to choose from as they tend to use what is in season, so changes all the time and there are always specials on the menu. The beer is good and averagely priced . Very quiet.

Disliked: The campsite is very very basic, and overpriced for what it is. £20.00/£30.00 with electric. Grass hadn't been cut for about a month or so. Water tap and black waste is at the pub, so a bit of a trek from the field, also you have to go through the pub garden to get there. We knew there weren't any showers and the toilet is only available when the pub is open. With a bit of investment this could be an excellent spot.

Local attractions

If you’ve decided on outdoor activities as a theme, there are plenty of places to get out for walks and cycling days nearby – and of course, Lincolnshire’s famously rather flat so any such activities should be relatively easy on the knees. For alternative pursuits, it’s 15 minutes’ drive to a horse riding centre, 20 minutes to a golf course and half an hour to Rutland Water for fishing and watersports. Prefer your days out to have a bit of history behind them? Get down to the gorgeous Burghley House (half an hour’s drive) for a wander around the grand building, the sculpture garden and the intriguing Garden of Surprises. Grimsthorpe Castle (15 minutes) is another place that should be on your list for pretty views inside and out. For a bit of urban time, pop down to Peterborough (35 minutes) to visit the cathedral and museum before boarding the Nene Valley Railway, or take a wander around Stamford (25 minutes), which also has a pool if you fancy a dip while on your travels.
