The lovely views

General

  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail

What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham; is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too.

Folks use The Beeches campsite in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site.

The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too.

Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – we recommend old Roman road Ermine Street for walks...

Please note

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

We liked the fact that we could all camp together, we pitched up in our caravan and family in 2 big tents for the weekend. We were in the back field which was ideal as we had room to have a mini football kick a bout and a game of rounders without encroaching on other campers. The children all enjoyed the space too. We had other family members visit us for a BBQ and get together on one of the days. A good time was had by all there. Toilets/showers very close to the field and a range of toys available for children to use along with a climbing frame and swing. Satnavs direct you to the opposite side of the A17, you need to turn onto the B6403 and immediate turn right in to cafe carpark area.

    Disliked:

Quite a bit of road noise from the A17 which is to be expected as the campsite is parallel to the main road. But if you're occupied with family doing activities then you will not be bothered about it.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your kind words, we know the road noise is a huge issue for some and if we could pick the campsite up and put it elsewhere, we would.

Liked the Cafe at the entrance to site

    Disliked:

Padlock on gate, had rained and large puddles at entrance difficult to unlock gate.
Sandy patch would be better if made for hard standing.
Amenities a little dated whole site needs updating, ok as a stopover but would not stay for a week.
Larger sign at entrance missed the sign had to go round again to find it.

From the manager...

Hi and I’m very sorry that you didn’t like our site, unfortunately the recent rain has not helped with the puddles by the main gate. This site usually drains very well and there are plans to address the ‘watergate’ issue over the closed season. The toilet blocks are also due an upgrade and that starts tomorrow, 16/10/2019. Believe me, we are not unaware of the things that need doing. However, that said, it all takes time and money.

From the manager...

Hi Mark, I am so very sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. We do state, quite clearly, that we are next to a busy road, A17 on the PitchUp Information about our site. It is a busy road and is fairly constant all day and night.

Nice quiet relaxing campsite. Owners were very friendly and helpful. Pitch sizes were good. Toilets and showers cleaned regularly throughout the day. There was some road noise as next to main road, but it didn't bother us. Plenty to do within 30 to 45 mins drive.
Would recommend this site and will visit again.

Thank you for your review, which is always greatly appreciated. The road noise is, just about, the only thing we have no control over and is pretty constant, day and night. Majority of people say that they only hear it when someone mentions it. I'm very pleased to hear that it had not bothered you. See you next time.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse.

As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events.

Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle.

Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.

Must see

  • Belton House (7.3 miles)
  • Lincoln Medieval Bishops' Palace (13.9 miles)
  • Lincoln Cathedral (14.0 miles)
