  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail
What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham, is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too… Folks use The Beeches site in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site. The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too. Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – and the folk here recommend old Roman road Ermine Street as a top spot for walkies.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: I stayed at The Beeches campsite for 1 night for a stopover. For the price, you can't knock it all. Facilities were clean and the pitches were a decent size too. I picked this site due to it's location and price. Its literally just off the A17 and was only £15.30. There was a cafe next door, which was closed on the Sunday morning, but also a co-op about a 5 min drive away.

Disliked: Road traffic could be heard on the site, which can't be avoided. I specifically booked the site due to the ease of location.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: We pretty much liked all of the site the owners couldn't do enough for us . This was owe first trip out to try our roof tent and we loved the place .the toilets and showers were nice and clean .a great place to go very family friendly with amenities for children .it was nice just to sit and listen to the birds and watch the robin's. The one thing that me and the wife liked was you were able to add on extras at the end if you wanted or needed them .we had a fire pit which they even supplied

Disliked: Nothing

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Stephen, it was an absolute pleasure having you stay with us over the weekend. We absolutely loved your tent setup and that you chose to do a test run with us prior to going further afield later. Thank you for posting a review and we look forward to seeing you both again soon.

Not one for us again.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Proximity to Cranwell

Disliked: Poor signage coupled with poor Internet meant finding the site was difficult. Toilets adequate if rudimentary. Numerous permanent dilapidated sites with old equipment and kit dumped around them.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Andrew, many thanks for your review. We have addressed your issue of signage as these are now ready to go up. We do not have internet onsite for use by campers. The reason for this was due to cost and also because some campers specifically liked the fact that their children were encouraged to play outside and not be tied to phones. Unfortunately, we do not have very good signal in parts around the site due to our geographic location in a dip but reception is good nearer the A17. Our toilet block is more than adequate as we recently revamped these. We are in essence a basic site but those who stay with us describe it as rustic, family orientated, and homely. We always give a warm welcome and introduce ourselves. Your party were given this too! We are unsure exactly your comment about dilapidated sites as yes we are remodelling on site and this part of our long term plan. Work is taking place continuously to improve the site by caravan owners who are improving their pitches and this involves moving their furniture and belongings. We have spoken to owners to ensure this does happen again. Outside the main gates are outbuildings which do not have anything to do with us therefore we have no control if you are speaking about the shed on the way up to the site or the industrial units. However, we came and spoke to you, your wife and made a fuss of your dog after you arrived and specifically asked if there were any problems to talk to us but instead you chose to post a defamatory review. At the end of the day, The Beeches is not a site for you. However, for others it is a perfect haven where they can relax knowing we can provide the best service for the price and are very approachable to assist in any way possible.

Well maintained site, good toilet/shower block. Helpful owners. Can't fault it.…

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Was a little bit disappointed. I think the advert should say more suitable fir families. But then again we were the only ones there A17 very noisy.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review and are sorry to hear that the A17 disturbed you. You would probably have heard less noise had you pitched either on the front field or lower down on the back field. Unfortunately we can do nothing about road noise.

Excellent and clean, quiet and relaxing among trees and in the field.

From the A17 take the B6403, signposted Ancaster, then turn immediately right, and follow the signs to the Family Café, Beeches and Richwood. From Ancaster, drive for about three miles and then turn next left into what looks like a layby. Keep going along what looks like a track; the site is a few metres further along.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse. As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events. Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle. Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.
