General

  • Small friendly site 13 miles from Lincoln
  • Level and well-drained site
  • On the Ermine Way and the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail

What a handsomely historic location has the hamlet of Byards Leap – for it's between ancient Lincoln and the old market towns of Sleaford, Newark and Grantham; is on an aged Roman road, and is the setting of ye olde Byards Leap legend dating back centuries (Byard was a high-jumping horse, in case you're wondering). And the Knights Templar used to hang out around here too.

Folks use The Beeches campsite in the hamlet as a base to explore historic Lincolnshire or as a stopover enroute to Norfolk or the east coast: plenty of history around in those there parts too. It's a small and friendly site, level, grassy and well drained, with rather nice views over Lincolnshire farmland; access to the Ermine Way is straight from the site.

The Beeches has a play area and disabled-friendly amenities a few steps from the pitching area. It's next to the Byards Leap café which dishes up excellent breakfasts and lunches from Thursday to Sunday; a handful of good pubs and restaurants is within a five-mile radius too.

Dogs are welcome at The Beeches – we recommend old Roman road Ermine Street for walks...

From the manager...

Hi Diane,

Thank you for your comments. Glad to hear you had a good but short stay with us.
We have bought 4 lanterns to go around the toilet block, this should help the light issue.
Thank you again for the gift you gave me.

Shaun

Hi,

Sorry for your experience with us. We have recently changed our opening with the ground not being suitable.
We had issues with our emails and wasn't aware you were coming. If we had known we would of been able to sort something for you. We are a family run site and was away ourselves and had no signal.

Regards
Shaun

Had a problem finding it so tried to call the site, unable to get through or leave a message. When we eventually found the site it looked nothing like the picture. A narrow access to a closed gate that looked inhospitable. The ruts in the muddy field deterred us from opening the gate for fear of becoming bogged down and the place looked deserted. We said we'd rather stay in a lay by. I had to reversed the Motorhome to a turning area and we left.

From the manager...

Hi,

Sorry for your experience with us. We've had issues with our emails and wasn't aware anyone was coming. If we had known we would of sorted something for you. The site is no longer a year round site due to the ground not being suitable during the winter months. This has now been updated.

Location was convenient for our visit.

    Disliked:

I tried to contact the site twice. Once a day before we travelled, I left a message for a return call and again when we arrived at the site where a message just said the call couldnt be taken, try again... Didnt manage to speak to anyone! We had trouble finding the entrance, mainly because it is not sign posted from the road and when we turned off the road, a car was obscuring the very small sign. We called at that point for help. My husband took a look round and thats when he noticed the sign. The picture gives the impression of a wide access but it was a very narrow drive to the gate shown and not very welcoming. The gate was closed. There was no sign of life and we didnt want to chance driving into the field as the deep muddy ruts caused by other vehicles looked like a Bogging down ready to happen. With the help of my husband, I managed to reverse back into a small area where i could turn and we left. We had booked 2 nights but our first impression was such, we didnt feel comfortable there.

The site is no longer a year round site due to the ground not being suitable during the winter months. This has now been updated. We are in the process of sorting more signs as our sign keeps getting covered by our neighbors car.
The access road is narrow but wide enough to get large lorries that come down the drive to deliver to the timber business next door.

    Disliked:

The fact that I phoned before arrival and left a message and no one got back to me. Our name not on board upon arrival and no answer for 3 numbers and no answer from emergency number. I had paid in full upfront so I will be asking for my money back. We had to find somewhere else to stay at short notice for a caravan, two adults and two children and it was freezing!!!

From the manager...

Hi,

Sorry for your experience with us. I'm sorry to hear no one got back to you. I believe we have refunded, if not please get in touch.

Local attractions

Pick up details of local walks, cycle routes and town maps as well as leaflets and tourist info on site: there's quite a bit to do all around. A mix of quiet roads and bridleways linking the area's Lincolnshire villages means there's quite a bit to see if you want to get around by foot, pedal or horse.

As well as being on the Ermine Way, The Beeches is also on the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail and is close to the RAF Cranwell Heritage Centre and the Newark Air Museum. The Newark Showground is nearby too for shows, displays and events.

Plenty more history is at Lincoln – see the castle and cathedral if you only have time for two things – and at nearby National Trust properties like Grantham House and Tattershall Castle.

Or take trips around Lincolnshire's old towns, like Sleaford, a market town since the twelfth century; Grantham, where Isaac Newton went to school, and Newark, besieged by the roundy-headed ones in the English Civil War.

Must see
