  • Family-friendly site in Ingoldmells, five minutes’ drive to Skegness
  • Beaches, aquarium, amusement parks and farm all within five minutes
  • Dogs welcome on site; dog-friendly Ingoldmells South beach nearby
Prefer to head back to the peace and quiet of a pretty park after energetic days out? That’s sorted with a stay at The Woodlands – during a hol here, a couple of minutes’ drive from Butlins, you’ll be within easy access of Skegness’ many lively local attractions. While this park in Ingoldmells is fab for all the family, kids will especially be in their element when staying here; along with the Skegness action, within a five-minute drive there are steam trains to ride on, farm animals to meet and trampolines to bounce about on. But it’s not all full-on: if you're after a more laidback time there are also nature reserves to amble around, impressive buildings to admire and pretty gardens to wander. Pets are welcome at The Woodlands too, and more good news is that dogs can tear around Ingoldmells South’s sandy beach (five minutes’ drive) all year round, so seaside times with your canine pal are on the cards. As for the practical stuff, an amenities block is on base with toilets, showers and a washing-up area, and you’ll have internet access to help with plotting your days out.

Local attractions

Attractions start a short walk away from this site: trot towards the Lincolnshire Coast Light Railway (10 minutes' walk) for rides in an old railway carriage. Alternatively, jump in the car for the sights of Skegness (five minutes' drive) – think traditional seaside amusements like a pier, beach and fairground. There are also creatures to eyeball in the town’s Natureland Seal Sanctuary and Skegness Aquarium, as well as at the ARK wildlife park & exotic animal sanctuary (half an hour). Other kid-approved activities to try in the area include bounding around at the Jump Warriors Trampoline Park and rushing down the rides at the Fantasy Island amusement park (both five minutes’ drive). And for grownup things to do if you’re here sans small fry? Venture to the Victorian gardens at the National Trust's Gunby Hall (15 minutes) or mosey to the model car museum On Your Marques (even if only to tell the staff how much you appreciate its punny name). To escape the crowds, have a jaunt around the Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve (15 minutes), a protected area spanning the coast just south of Skegness, keeping an eye out for terns, skylarks, waders and brent geese depending on the season.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Very clean, well maintained lovely and quiet site

Disliked: Not the most friendliest of welcome. We was going with another party so requested to be put together but was denied, even though either side of their pitch was free and same for us we had no one either side of us but claimed he was fully booked and not allowed to swap pitches! We was one end and other party the other end but wasn’t allowed to be together, cannot check in while 4pm and have to be off by 11am which is stated (granted) but asked kindly if we could stay longer and we will pay seen as though others can’t check in while 4pm so was wanting to pay and stay till 3ish but answer was a firm “no I’m fully booked up” which didn’t make sense. That was also said the day before and there was numerous empty pitches just didn’t want to have anything to do with people and felt as though we was an inconvenience. Was questioned about the dog other party had 2 and us 1 and was told “ok because it’s only 2 dogs maximum per pitch” so we was fine but then the caravan next to us had 3 dogs in! Feel as though if your not a regular and your face doesn’t fit then it’s like you’re not welcome.

Liked: What a lovely site, the managers were so friendly and helpful, (we were first time caravaners) we took our bikes, so everything was very local, but far enough away. There is a hop on, hop off bus at the end of the road, which was good value. The aminaties were spotless, you need 50p for your shower. Just a lovely first experience for us. Level concrete hard standing pitches. No public wi fi but that did not bother us.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: I'm sure I would have found the site to my liking but as I turned up at the barrier I was very rudely told that they had double booked my pitch and I was refused entry. The guy spoke to me as if I was an idiot and it was my fault. I had turned up 30 mins early but would happily have waited until check in time. To add salt to my wound the guy said that the people with the caravan parked up next to me waiting to go in were the people they'd given my pitch to. The guy did not once apologise or offer to find me an alternative campsite. I said that they have obviously taken my payment and he ignored me. Therefore I will not ever return and neither will my group of camping friends and relatives!

Liked: Clean site, friendly welcome, helped us park the van as it was our first time. Felt totally secure. Good facilities. Shower block is 50p for a 7 minute shower which is more than enough. Walking distance from Fantasy Island and Ingoldmells. We did arrive earlier than the 4pm time but were allowed on without waiting. Our only criticism and this is nothing to do with the site, but there is a pub or club up the road that seems to think they need to have thumping dance music pumping out from 7pm until 2am. How this allowed by the local council we don't understand. However this is no reflection on the site itself as every site around there must have the same noise issue.

Liked: The location and tranquility of the site. It is far enough away from the ruckus and near enough to still enjoy its convenience. The site is well maintained as are the toilet and shower facilities, which are cleaned and replenished daily. These are based on our trip and what we found to like. We will return.

Disliked: Other commitments meant we could not stay longer.
