General

  • Peaceful back to basics site nine miles from Newark
  • Campfire area for guests to share
  • Pub serving food 600 yards away

Steal a break getting back to basics on the four and a half level acres of in the village of Brant Broughton in Lincolnshire – although there's easy access from the A17, this is a peaceful place, set back from the road on the south end of the village's High Street.

The campsite area is a long meadow that borders the Sandbeck stream to the south and the River Brant to the east, and has a designated campfire area for all guests to share (we think there should be ghost stories) and a loo block with hot and cold water. Well-behaved dogs are welcome on site.

A nursery selling fresh veg and garden plants is opposite the site and local pub the Generous Briton is 600 yards away; it serves food and takeaways, and has a café opposite that's open from Thursdays through to Sundays. Nearby Navenby has a fish and chip shop, an Indian takeaway, a baker, a butcher, antique shops and two pubs.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

The owners were helpful and they kept a very clean and tidy site.
We were dealt with promptly and all assistance was given to us in getting our electrical hook up sorted.
The back field was spacious, giving all of us camping over the bank holiday weekend plenty of space.
It was great that they were welcoming to our dog. Lovely village location and a reasonable local pub.
Good amount of interesting aircraft activity overhead. Plus some good quality pigeon action.

    Disliked:

There was only one toilet which was free for use. The other toilet comes with a charge; £5 deposit on a key which allows access to the pay for showers and the other toilet.
The allowing camp fires as advertised is in need of clarification. As individual camp fires, although officially allowed, have to adhere to strict guidelines and then subject to permission. There is a communal fire pit which is located at the far end of the camping field (as far away from the manicured caravan field as possible) and quite close to some of the tents. The fire was lit a few times during our stay and the caravan folk were invited and enjoyed a high and noisy time until 2:30 am on one of the evenings/mornings. I think we were informally invited to the fire pit party, but none of us campers had knowledge of the planned evenings event; whiles those in the caravans came prepared with food and booze at an arranged time. If our tent had been closer to the action and if our kids had been disturbed by the revellers; words would have been exchanged.

From the manager...

Sorry if you were disturbed. I agree 2.30 was too late and we will address this. However, the event wasn't planned by us - we simply chopped up the wood for a group of campers who go together to have a campfire.
We allow barbeques, etc, but ask for them to be well off the ground. Despite this the grass is burned in lots of places which makes things less pleasant for the next campers - can't think what else we can do to please everyone, except try our best to ensure campers are respectful of our grass!.

Nice laid out intimate campsite based in a lovely village. Very good shower.

    Disliked:

Even though in a nice setting u could hear the road noise in the distance. More toilets & shower would make this a great campsite.

From the manager...

Hopefully we will have these in place for next season. We have only been here 2 years and are working to gradually improve things.

Pitches generous as its within a touring van storage area, ... 28/08/2017

Pitches generous as its within a touring van storage area, public firepit was nice also.

    Disliked:

Only 1 solitary toilet with a pint glass full of old hand soaps and a single towel, the shower room was always locked and you could only get a key from reception which was never open, when camping you like to get up and at them first thing which you couldn't do, we never managed to try to it out!

Tent area was within a touring van storage area, so the view consisted of caravan fronts and people would turn up to collect their vans at random times. The entrance gate was permanently locked I'm guessing to protect the stored vans which was a little annoying. The main road nearby was very loud, so much so that we had to buy earplugs to help us sleep at night. Washing up facilities only had cold water which was not great to clean pans etc.

From the manager...

So sorry you didn't enjoy your stay.
We do have 2 toilets, and you were given a sheet asking you to come to the static caravan for a key [to the shower room] where staff are always available. We have to do this as we lose so many keys - the £5 is refundable. We keep if locked as children tend to play inside if we don't, which irritates other campers.
The toilets are cleaned every day, and the towel [nearly new] is changed daily.
There are soaps in a soap dish, but also a PHS soap dispenser on the wall above the sink - although most campers tend to bring their own toiletries.
Sorry about the road noise - we do hear it when the air is still but certainly not loud enough to require ear plugs!

Family living local to the area came to visit and were also very impressed with the sight. Very reasonable rates and I love the idea of the donation to the air ambulance for your dogs to stay. Excellent stay ... we WILL be back

Set in a lovely quiet peaceful village. I arrived with tyre problems in the van and the help I received was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble, they found a trolley Jack and helped change the wheel. Electric hookup worked perfectly. No problems at all. Definitely on my list to visit next year.

Local attractions

Hop in the car, for day trips are all around from . Newark-on-Trent, aka Newark, is nine miles away and since 2015 has been home to the Newark Torc, which can now be enviously viewed in the National Civil War Centre and Newark Museum; other sights to see are the many listed buildings in and around town, including the rising spire of Church of St. Mary Magdalene – trust us, you won't be able to miss it.

Also close by, see the 30+ exhibits of the Bubble Car Museum at Byards Leap, five miles towards Sleaford on the A17, and visit the market town of Sleaford and its Cogglesford Mill within 12 miles. Lincoln – we think cathedral, castle, marina and the shops of Brayford Waterfront – is 13 miles away.

If you feel like having some history, get hither to RAF Connisby, home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, the only flying Lancaster in Europe, several Spitfires, Hurricanes, the new Eurofighter and a DC3 (Dakota). Or try a trip 24 miles away to Tattershall Castle, a medieval castle now managed by the National Trust.
