General

  • Small, rural and simple site by the River Wreake
  • Sustainable approach using reclaimed materials
  • Electric car charging point, a play area, hammock space and free wifi

There aren't only canoes at Birchcanoes by the River Wreake in rural Leicestershire – plenty of spaces to put up hammocks are on site too. (You might want to pause here to heave a contented sigh.)

Riverside Birchcanoes covers about an acre of firm level grass, surrounded by green and pleasant countryside in a wildlife haven about nine miles from the city of Leicester. It's a small and simple site where the team aims for guests to have a relaxed and peaceful time; families, groups and solo travellers are all welcome.

Birchcanoes is run on a sustainable basis and uses reclaimed materials. It has an electric car charging point, a play area and free wifi. An area of the pitching field is set aside for campfires.

A thatched pub serving meals is a mile away in the local village of Hoby.

fairly level pitch , close to the river where you could use the canoes free of charge. owner very friendly

    Disliked:

paid for 2 electric hook-ups but could only reach with 1 as we had to leave access for vehicles to get by. The owner was very friendly and he did refund the price of unused hook-up. very close to train lines where train run most of the day and late into the night.

    Playing with the canoes

    Disliked:

Only 1 shower/toilet which had obviously not been cleaned for a long time
Outhouse that you had to shovel sawdust in to had a small solar light with the solar panel in a sheltered position so it couldn't gain enough charge for the night time
Kitchen/cleaning area without drainage and that obviously hadn't been cleaned for a long time

A shame because it has so much potential

From the manager...

Sorry you didn't enjoy your stay with us after all. Your comments are quite valid and I will keep them in mind in future. I hope people read your review along with the others in order to gain a fair picture of our place. Best wishes John

Quirky relaxed site with basic facilities but use of canoes a plus. 29/08/2016

Very informal relaxed atmosphere. Use of owners canoes on river beside camp a huge bonus. Nice tree house and swings for younger children. Campfires allowed and several fire pits available to use. Shower nice and hot and plenty of hot water to wash up. Freezer available which we were allowed to make use of. Owner very friendly and helpful. No pressure to pack up and leave on departure day.

    Disliked:

This site will not be for everyone. Not the most modern and clean but it is what it is. The laid back approach meant anyone just pitched where they wanted and had I not had an extra long electric hook up I would have had no electric. Also the ground was VERY hard so be prepared! Couldn't access Internet despite having code. Site right next to very busy train line which was in use from 5am to 10.30 every day. We quickly got used to it so wasn't a problem - actually kept the two pre-teens entertained guessing train type.

From the manager...

Thank you for your very fair review. I hope people read it along with the other reviews in order to gain a fair picture of our place, which as you say is "not for everyone". Best wishes John

    Laid-back atmosphere
    Excellent communication from John (owner)
Site by river and close to compost toilet and shower cubicle.
    Countryside feel
    Facility for making campfire
Handy for Rutland water and Leicester outdoor sports sites

    Disliked:

Limited facilities for washing up, toilets and showers.
Noise from railway (sporadic) and from nearby airport (also sporadic)
No / poor signal for Vodafone mobile / internet

From the manager...

Thank you for your very fair review. I hope people read it along with the other reviews in order to gain a complete picture. I will be attempting to address some of the issues over the coming year, and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Best wishes John

We loved our stay. Instant welcome, and was made to feel very relaxed. Really appreciated the kitchen area, and picnic benches.
It was a lovely peaceful site, and listening to the bird song, the evening violin session, and the occasional train was perfect.
The children had so much to do, and loved the play area. As well as the space to play and run around freely.
I would recommend this site to families, and to anyone really.
We will definitely be going again.

    Disliked:

Sat nav told us we had arrived just as we passed the turn in. So maybe an extra sign to give us 100yards notice would be helpful for newies.

When we got there the owner was out but we were greeted by a lovely family who were there for the week to build a canoe. Their kids started playing with ours, and they showed us around all the nooks and crannies. Weather just about held out but sadly when we pitched up and turned the gas on we discovered meeces had eaten through the pipes and the smell of gas was very strong so we couldn't stay after all. But we stopped on for an extra hour or so rummaging around all the interesting little bits n pieces and the kids were loving it. Shame we had to leave but it was only really a scouting mission anyway to see about the canoeing etc. You can bring your own or use theirs. Waters a bit shallow.

Caught up with the owner when we were leaving and he said we can have a freebie upon our return once we sort out the camper.

    Disliked:

No signage to tell you that you have arrived apart from on the gate, which you cant see unless its closed. This then meant we had to take camper down the narrow lane a few miles and turn back where. But there is also a little park down the lane.

Nothing in the locale really which means you will need to drive to find a pub etc.

Right adjacent to trainline with frequent trains who insist on pulling the horn as they pass. Not sure why as the track is quite straight there and its after the rail crossing.

From the manager...

Thank you for this lovely review, and we look forward to welcoming you back when the camper is sorted out. Best wishes John

Ground was very hard and bent all the pegs.

Thank you for this lovely review. It will be lovely to welcome you back again. You are right about the hard ground, I should suggest to people that they bring extra strong pegs ( and they can borrow my hammer).. Best wishes John

Local attractions

Small guests will have a stellar time at Leicester's National Space Centre less than nine miles from Birchcanoes, where there are galactic treats galore, over 150 interactive challenges and events running regularly throughout the year. Abbey Park, Botanic Gardens, Castle Gardens are also in the city if small space cadets still need to let off steam.

The Birchcanoes team highly recommends nearby Bradgate Park, enclosed as a deer park over eight centuries ago. Red and fallow deer still roam here and the park is also popular with visitors for its geology, the only known Precambrian fossils in Western Europe, concerts and plays, River Lin paddles, the SSSI of Swithland Wood, and a wealth of other wildlife including many wildfowl at the park reservoir.

Rutland Water is also easily accessible from the campsite and is filled with outdoorsy things to do like the 25-mile circular walking and cycling trail, rock climbing, boating, sailing, nature reserves and an outdoor adventure centre. If the canoes back at base have whetted your whistle, more of the same is available here too.
