General

  • Peaceful rural location on the edge of Medbourne
  • Pub serving meals nearby
  • Barbecue, garden furniture and outdoor terrace

If you're pitching up here, it's fairly certain you're in the market for some English countryside rest and relaxation? Sorted: Rural Relaxing is in the village of Medbourne in the Welland Valley, a setting that the friendly team reckon is one of Britain's best-kept secret spots. And it has a pub nearby dishing up meals – that's a rural relaxation result.

As its name might hint, this is a firmly rural site: the owners have taken care not to make it look commercialised in any way so that guests can settle down and soak up old-school Leicestershire countryside. And then make themselves at home among the site barbie, garden furniture with comfy cushions and the sunny terrace for alfresco eats...

The owners have also added a welcome cabin with CDs, books, DVDs and outside game kits like bats, balls and rackets, as well as timetables for local leisure centres and a list about what's on in the local area. Added in 2017, a new coffee hut serves freshly baked croissants, pain au chocolat, Nespresso coffee, tea and hot chocolate. The coffee hut is open Saturday and Sunday mornings and during the main season.

coffee hut serving home baked croissants, pain au chocolat, Nespresso coffee, tea and hot chocolate. Available at the weekends Saturday & Sunday mornings during main season!

And that pub? It's the nearby Nevill Arms, dishing up good pub food, a wide-ranging a la carte menu and fine wines by the riverside; it also has a café open daily for breakfast, lunch, coffees and afternoon tea – do try the scones and the terrace, advises the Rural Relaxing team – and don't forget to dollop on the clotted cream.

The village shop and post office at Medbourne can sort supplies such as homemade bread, cakes, biscuits and newspapers; elsewhere, you'll find most of what you need in the nearby towns of Market Harborough, Uppingham, Stamford and Oakham.

Rural Relaxing's amenities include a ladies' toilet and shower, plus a separate one for the gents.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Fabulous location with lovely view, friendly and helpful owner with cheery disposition. We had use of fridge and freezer which was very handy for keeping our food and drinks fresh.

The tent was nicely appointed and we had use of a fire pit and barbecue.

The local village was a short walk away and had a nice little shop and cafe.

    Disliked:

Not enough toilet or shower facilities!

From the manager...

Thank you for your lovely review and your comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed your stay. The Sports Club's event was a one off and I'm sorry if this disturbed you, normally you would expect to hear only the leather on the willow whilst they play cricket. Hope to welcome you again one day.

Lovely rural location very near to the quaint village, local pub & Cafe (literally 5 mins walk away if that)
Local cafe Nevill was lovely for breakfast!
    Lovely decor in the cabin
    Toiletries in the ladies
Borrow and bring back room full of books, games, bedding, chairs, toys local info etc
    Communal fridge & Freezer
    Nice hot showers
    First aid kit in ladies
    Coffee/tea and biscuits in cabin
Excellent value for money if 4 people stay
    Lovely 'sitting' area for guests
Caroline was very contactable before our stay

    Disliked:

It wasn’t the 'cabin' experience we were expecting - I wouldn't describe the 'cabin' as a cabin as it was literally right next to the ladies toilet on one side and a utility room on the other. It was a converted part of a stable, and as lovely as it looked inside it wasn't sound proofed against all the banging of stable doors and other (toilet related!) noises. We could hear everyone's conversations loudly as if we were in the same room. Obviously people needed to use the facilities early on and so for 2 days we were woken at 6am in the morning with the banging of the doors.
No privacy at all - As the cabin was attached to the ladies toilet a couple of people actually entered the room thinking it was another communal room (until they saw us!) There was no sign or indication on the door to state that it was a private holiday letting and to please respect the guests privacy. When we first arrived we didn't actually realise the cabin was our 'cabin' as there was nothing to say so. We expected it to be set in its own location on the field with the bell tents. Not only this but work men came round the back of the cabin at 8.30am one day to discuss putting a septic tank there (we could hear their conversation through the walls). I was actually about to get changed so that was a bit of a surprise!
No natural daylight in the room - The 'Cabin' has 3 small windows which are over shadowed by trees and woodland so hardly any daylight could get through. There were lights in the room but one had a green bulb in it that didn't do anything at all light wise. The only way to get light in the room was to open the stable door but this meant that other guests kept peering into the room on the way to the toilet (once again no privacy).
On the Monday morning we stayed a bin lorry came to empty the bins at 7am (which wasn't too bad as we had already been woken up by people using the toilet :-S). With no sound proofing in the cabin it was a real racket first thing. Obviously we understand bins need to be emptied but if the cabin had been on the field it wouldn’t have been nearly as noisy.
Only one shower and one sink in the ladies - Because it was so easy for us to know if anyone was in the toilet it wasn't a problem for me to nip to get my shower when it was free. If the site were to have been more full that could possibly cause some issues with everyone queuing for a shower/sink.
It was a little bit dirty in places, I know it's a cabin and it's meant to have some rustic charm but a dust of cobwebs on the windows and the mirror wouldn't take long to do.
No hot water to wash dishes - not terrible but would have been nice to have been able to wash our dishes a little more hygienically.

From the manager...

I'm sorry Stephanie, that the cabin did not live up to your expectations, I pride myself on offering a nice little facility for people to enjoy and inspite a couple of negative comments, almost everone who has stayed have enjoyed the rural "wilder camping" experience which is exactly what is on offer.

The lightbulb will be removed - this was left from a previous guest and I agree, I don't believe it's suitable!

I make guests aware ahead of their arrival of the "wild camping" facilities you refer to specifically relating to washing up - it's an outside bench with a cold feed only. We are looking at options for next year with the builder who came on site that weekend. The builder was called in to look at piping, again, without my knowing that it was 8.30am so I can only apologise for his keeness.

The bin lorry does arrive early and I'm sorry that it disturbed you, I will see if I can arrange a different collection time.

Regarding the sound proofing, again I am sorry you were troubled by other guests using the facilities next door and I will look at your suggestion of incorporating an exterior notice, thank you.

As I mention, the site is sold as a rural "real" camping experience and the cabin is an option for people to try camping without the need to pitch a tent.

We have high standards on the cleaning front and I was disturbed to read you spotted a cobweb & dust on the mirror, this will be addressed forthwith.

We stayed for one night as we traveled up the country. We knew we wouldn't be arriving until late in the evening (ended up being midnight) so being supplied the gate code and being able to arrive at anytime was perfect for us. When we woke in the morning we got to see how pleasant and well maintained the site was. The on site faculties were great (clean and modern) it would have been nice to have been able to stay longer and make use of the communal BBQ area of an evening.

    Very good pre-stay communication
    Easy arrival check in
    Campfires allowed
Bell tents were nicely kitted out for a bit of trial glamping

Small site, fairly quite for our stay, rural and remote if you like that kind of thing, with a short walk to the local pub across the park. Not bad for a short weekend stay.

Tea and Coffee hut from 9:00 to 10:30am a really nice touch, well done

    Disliked:

Cabin - Poor - The location is located in between kitchen and ladies loo's. No privacy and very noisy. It's a converted stable and it's not private or detached. Not what we expected and a real let down compared to the bell tents.

Its well kitted out and I see what they tried to do but, should really build 4 proper cabins up opposite the bell tents.

Men's block had 1 shower and 1 toilet - Clean and new but no way that can cope if the site is full. Limited facilities for all.

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments which have been noted.

I am sorry you didn't like the cabin and I love your suggestion of the proper cabins - it is on the 'future' plan but a need for planning permissions & other considerations will ensure that as a possibility, but I hope to be in a position to offer those one day.
I nevertheless thank you for your feedback and I hope you will visit again

Fantastic friendly site and lovely village, close enough to a large town to be able to get supplies if the local village shop hasn't got whats needed. Enough to entertain children within a 20-30 minute drive with Rutland water & Twin lakes theme park just up the road. Caroline keeps the facilities spotless and is very welcoming. Large fridge and a good size freezer in the cabin that's free to use, Nice and quiet not near any major roads, lovely local pub that isn't too expensive. Great idea with the borrowing cabin the children always had outside toys to play with. we will be sure to book again as is a gem of a site.

    Disliked:

Site on a slight hill but not enough to cause any problems (observation not a dislike).

A very relaxing site, friendly staff, recommended 03/06/2017

Lovely campsite, Caroline & daughter were very friendly & welcoming. The cabin was cosy, had a small fridge & kettle/cups/tea/coffee. Log burner was good. Pleased to see there was a carbon monoxide alarm & smoke alarm, for peace of mind! Nice touch to have ice cream/crisps etc with an honesty box, & free juice. Plenty of blankets in case of cold, & a pack of large playing cards in cabin, & Jenga game. Right next door to toilets (both a plus and a minus!). The ladies' toilets had sanitary products in case of emergency - a very thoughtful touch! Also, shampoos & hand creams etc was a very nice addition. The loos were spotlessly clean. Cabin had a keypad lock, so we felt secure. Also, barn doors on the cabin meant we could open the top one for fresh air (but people going past to the loo could look in, so it was a mixed blessing!) Location is fabulous. Very relaxing vibes (name is appropriate!), so would recommend staying here.

    Disliked:

There were too few toilets - two in the ladies, one in the gents (no urinals), & just one shower in each, so there was a queue for the shower in the morning (I ended up making do with a lick & a promise!). Also, the fact that the cabin was "attached" to the toilet block meant that we could hear anyone who used the facilities; their voices, the banging of the wooden doors, etc - so from 6.30 am I slept fitfully, being disturbed quite frequently. Caroline does ask campers to use the facilities quietly, for this reason, & I don't think people were especially noisy; it was just the proximity & the fact there was only a thin wooden wall in between that meant we heard everything. The 'likes' outweigh the 'dislikes' on this site however!

From the manager...

As you know, the site promotes "rural" facilities and former stables, which now house the loo facilities as well as the cabin. With this in mind, we only have space for a loo & shower in the gents rather than urinals. The ladies supports two loos and I try to make sure the little extras are a welcomed touch.

I have noted that you were disturbed with noisy campers using the facilities during the night and for this I apologise. I have since incorporated a further request for campsite quietness after 11pm and before 7am in the morning.

Thank you for your review. I hope you will visit again.

Great to be able to walk into the pretty village and sit outside the pub by the river.
Went to Burleigh House which is near and well worth a visit. Also went to Foxton Locks at Caroline's suggestion, good place for a walk beside the canal and a pint at the bottom of the flight of locks. Excellent ice cream at the pub at the top too and a Museum halfway down.
Cricket club opposite, nice to watch a game while we were there.
We were an adult group so I haven't scored for child friendliness.

Also in the area, have a wander around Foxton Locks to see its boats and its museum, getting lost in the giant maize maze at Wistow (open in August) and fly fishing in the waters of nearby Lutterworth.
