The views from the pitches over charnwood forest

  • Small dog-friendly site with views over Charnwood Forest and fields
  • Calke Abbey and Beacon Hill Country Park 15 minutes’ drive
  • Within five minutes' drive of the M1 and 10 minutes from the A50
Plop yourself down at Top Merrill Views if good views are one of your must-haves. With views over Charnwood Forest and sloping countryside where horses often graze in the distance, this site is lovely and scenic. Pitches are set a little way away from the main working farm, so dogs are welcome to join you on your rural break too. Where exactly is this place? It’s in the Leicestershire countryside, about 40 minutes’ drive away from any of you city-dwellers who are based in Leicester, Nottingham and the north of Birmingham. Beacon Hill Country Park and the National Trust’s Calke Abbey are both within 15 minutes’ drive of the farm. Plus, it's a handy midway spot for those doing some long-distance travels, as it's just a five-minute drive from the M1 Junction 24 and 10 minutes from the A50. This is the sort of spot where guests can easily get out to the local country pub – there’s a footpath right next to the site that will get you to the village of Belton in around 25 minutes. The village has a handy little shop as well as a pub serving all the usual staples. Your evenings at Top Merrill Views can be spent in merry spirits around a firepit or barbecue; they’re permitted, just as long as you rent a firepit from the site (log baskets are also available for an additional fee). The modern shower and toilet block is clean and well-maintained, covering the essentials, and the site has a friendly, laidback vibe that should help you to settle in in no time.

What customers say

This campsite offers spacious pitches and a peaceful atmosphere with beautiful views. Visitors consistently praise the excellent, clean, and well-maintained toilet and shower facilities, often described as modern and warm. The owners are frequently highlighted as exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and helpful. A small on-site shop for essentials is a convenient addition. While most found the site quiet, some noted occasional noise from a nearby country lane, particularly if pitched close to it.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Beautiful countryside, easy to find, lots to do in the area including easy walking and cycling routes with direct access from the camp. Facilities clean and tidy, lovely shower.

Disliked Couldn't get on allocated pitch as large motorhome had spread out over the pitch so selected a vacant one and that was fine. Paid for firewood in advance but couldn't find out how to get it?

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Loved the views. Our first off grid stay in our motor home. Had a great weekend. Staff were helpful when the toilet paper ran out. The honesty shop is well stocked and loved the games you could take play with and take back. We would could back to stay.

Disliked Only thing I would say is to add quiet times to the booking. Sorry if I missed this on the page.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful views

Disliked The walk to the toilet is so far if you’re towards the end of the pitch.

They have squeezed too many pitches
Onto the site which feels very greedy of them. It was overcrowded on a busy weekend.

On our second night there was a huge group of 30 or so people who shared just 3 pitches (how this was allowed I have no idea). They were loud and obnoxious and played loud music from their arrival until 1am then were up chatting loudly until 3am!

To make matters worse this meant that there were two toilets for about 100 people! Insanity!!

We (and at least two other families) left a day early because of the state of the facilities and the loud, obnoxious group

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Spacious and flat pitches, great views and good facilities including showers, toilets, Belfast sink for pots and washing machine. Site has a small honesty shop with dog treats, eggs and even little packets of tea and coffee. Owners really friendly and in a great location next to a working stable. 15 min walk to the village pub where we got a great welcome too. Another 15 min drive and you get to Caulk Abbey which has some great walks and the usual National Trust shops and playgrounds.

Disliked Nothing really.

Local attractions

Always on the lookout for a good stroll? There are plenty of green spots to go to in this splendid patch of Leicestershire countryside. The nature trails at Beacon Hill Country Park (15 minutes’ drive) will probably please the kids; play areas and sculptures are scattered around for them to run to and investigate. Calke Abbey (15 minutes) is a particularly grand setting for a stroll, with 600 acres of countryside and gardens to its name. The country house has lots of points of interest, no matter whether you’re into plants, animals or history, including National Nature Reserves, a deer park, a walled garden, a 19th-century church and an old stable yard. Spotting the peacocks and fallow deer at Bradgate Park (35 minutes) can fill yet another adventurous afternoon. If you’d like to see a wider range of animals and critters, Twycross Zoo (20 minutes) is a wise choice; it has all four Great Apes, as well as penguins and elephants. Those who are into their motorsports are also well-based here. Donington Park Circuit (10 minutes) has a busy annual calendar with car and motorcycle events.
