  • Dog-friendly family glamping site in the Hertfordshire countryside
  • Horse riding and climbing nearby; on the border of Essex and Cambridge
  • Lakes for swimming, canoeing and fishing; water park; café and bar
From a paddle in the lake to channelling your inner yogi on shore… there are lots of ways to relax at Glamping at Redricks Lakes, a dog-friendly family glampsite on the border between Essex and Cambridgeshire, surrounded by the Hertfordshire countryside on the outskirts of Sawbridgeworth. With two signature lakes on site, this is a great place to rest, retreat and clear the mind – and only a little over an hour from London by train. Do as little or as much as you want to… brush up on your swimming skills in the lakes (they’re licensed for open water swimming and there are coaching sessions on Wednesday evenings), dally around the woodland trails, dive right in with the kids at Aqua Splash or reconnect with your inner child on the inflatable waterpark. Afterwards, there are hot showers on site for washing off in. If swimming isn’t your thing, there are canoes for hire too… or you may want to stay on the shore and head to four purpose-built fishing lakes on site (including specimen carp up to 40lbs, mixed fishery and a match lake). Fancy yourself rather crafty? The site also runs marksmanship classes and (if you want to improve your flexibility) Ishvari yoga classes. The furnished bell tents here are in spacious position in the site's field, with ample space for guests to park bikes and paddleboards – and, of course, framed by the gorgeous woodlands and open-water adventure lake (with easy access to all the facilities and the space you need to fully enjoy your break). You’re likely to have worked up an appetite. If so, the lakeside café sells a good bacon sandwich or there are chilled drinks at the on-site bar. And when you feel like venturing off the site, there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and shops within five minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

Could climbing or golf be your calling? Well, close by is a climbing wall (five minutes’ drive) or The Manor’s grand golf course (10 minutes) . If you’d rather go for a leisurely trot in the countryside, visit the local horse riding stables (10 minutes). To see animals that are a little more exotic, Paradise Wildlife Park (half an hour) has zookeeping, photography and animal experiences with animals such as lizards, lemurs and tapirs. Pishiobury Park’s (35 minutes’ walk) woodlands and parklands, on the other hand, are rather ripe grounds for spying on birdlife. You may spot a bird or two (or a creature in the bushes) along the ancient woodland trails around Epping Forest (35 minutes’ drive) too. Elsewhere, walk or trot your way around the National Trust’s Hatfield Forest (half an hour), once used by royals for hunting. The historic Hylands House (45 minutes) is also set up for a fanciful day out among the country park's stables, gardens, playgrounds and artist studios.

Bell tent (five person)

Liked: Small safe location, safe for kids to run around. Plenty of room for bbqs etc… beach/lake quite picturesque. Staff friendly. Phone charging points and lights in tents.

Disliked: Quite a lot of black mould in the tents. Wouldn’t describe this as “Glamping” as there was nothing glamorous in the tent just a mouldy bed frame with a dirty mattress and a couple of scruffy fold out sofa beds, floor covering didn’t cover the floor fully and taken from a smaller tent. I had to remove Snails, slugs and dead wood lice. We found the pictures to be very miss leading. Toilets very dirty and smelly, no soap in the ladies and floors were soaking wet (no toilet roll provided) skipped the showers. Sinks in washing up area filthy, full of old food. Cement factory next door noisy at night. BBQs dirty and don’t forget your fire lighters as they charge a fiver for half a box (£1.40 for a full box). Bonfire in the car park where they burn the waste.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Allowed go have a fire, and nobody checking on you all the time (never saw anybody) Lady in the shop was nice enough but didn’t seem to know how you get to the train station (see below red locked gate)

Disliked: Locked gates by the river, so if you walk to Harlow you won’t be able to get back (the gates locked) ridiculous and not mentioned anywhere The entrance path is barely passable due to pot holes, suprised people’s suspension haven’t collapsed noise levels are ridiculous, Sunday morning was awoken by shot gun noises.. and I mean loud, sounded like bonfire night The grass is very uneven, lots of holes, quite dangerous really if your having a kick about The men’s toilet cubicle lock was missing so only 1 available, queuing for a number 2 for a long time

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The lake was a great activity for the kids. They loved swimming and catching the little fish. The lady in the office was very helpful and polite.

Disliked: Site is a little ‘rough and ready’. Very basic facilities, but it’s something we’re use to with camping, however I can imagine if you were glamping you’d want more. No catering which was unfortunate. Very noisy at night with the factory, but far more upsetting was the manager (Dan). He started off polite, but he was extremely rude and aggressive. He actually threatened us and left us extremely worried as we were the only ones on the site at the time. Now reading the reviews it’s understandable why on a Sunday in august we were the only ones there. It’s clear he’s been quite unpleasant to many people. Best avoid this site if you can.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The lake is amazing, sandy beach is great for the little ones, but deep and big enough for swimming and paddle board/canoe. Kids loved the decorations in the toilets. Aqua splash is walking distance and loads of fun. Staff was super friendly and went out of their way to help us, we were very greatful to have the firewood we purchased delivered to our tent.
