Relax and take in the rural views (added by manager 24 jul 2023)

  • Hertfordshire wild camping-style pitches with added facilities
  • A five-minute drive to Whipsnade Zoo; Warner Bros. Studio 25 mins
  • Small café on site, plus activities for kids and families
Fancy dipping your toe into the world of wild camping but not quite sure how you’ll take to life without the trappings of everyday life? The Little Wilderness is a good place to give it a whirl – the pitches here are mown into a wild meadow for that proper rural feeling, but they’ve also got access to a good collection of facilities to provide a few home comforts. This is a small campsite with only a few guests on site at any one time, so it’s all nice and peaceful. As you’ll be staying in a natural meadow, you may well spot lots of wildlife around the place – it’s a popular spot for animals as it’s right next to the ancient trees of Ashridge Forest. It’s also next to the Icknield Way, an ancient trail used by long-distance walkers (and if you don’t fancy walking far, you may like to hear that there are three pubs within walking distance – details for these and other walking routes provided on site). Facilities on site are centred on the yurt, which has a café area that serves teas, coffees and light snacks at selected times (just check the board for current serving times). There are also compost toilets up here for guest use. As a family-friendly setup, this is a great place to introduce kids to the concept of camping, too – there are activities running throughout the week for all ages, including kids’/family creative sessions, movie nights and yoga sessions. Getting to this Hertfordshire spot should be pretty straightforward, as there’s easy access from the B road outside. And the location about 10 minutes’ drive from Berkhamsted means that it makes a great little escape from London for city-dwellers.

Liked: Had a lovely night stay. The sight does actually exist, we didn’t find it on our first drive by but I pulled over and called Rachel who guided me back. Great facilities and a lovely lady.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The whole set-up was perfect. There was a great converted barn that hosted activities and also housed the 2 clean toilets, sink, shower facilities and if you really wanted to be lazy a kettle and washing machine! If you are looking to legally "wild camp" this is a great site as there are big unplotted pitches and lots of privacy and you are close to nature but if you do require clean toilets, washing facilities and even a friendly welcoming host that offers quizzes, discos and morning yoga then this is ideal. I think we saw "Matt R" a previous reviewer leave and then arrive during our visit so ignore his review - this site absolutely does exist and is wonderful.

Disliked: The grass in the wild meadow was a bit long but it soon squashed down and these are definitely first world problems. What more do you want for this nightly rate!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Spacious field, nice toilets. Electric kettle. Borrowed a barbecue to sit our disposable one in which made it much easier. Friendly hosts. I like that it is a basic campsite - no need for lots of extras.
