  • Exclusive-use site in Staunton on Wye, for family groups of up to 10
  • Arthur’s Stone 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 20 minutes
  • Firepit, barbecue and cooking hut provided; farm shop close by
A secluded site in the Herefordshire village of Staunton on Wye, Maggie’s Field Campsite has half an acre of space for the exclusive use of one group of adults and kids – up to 10 in total, although one dog is allowed to come along too… The site is self-contained, so young guests can run about safely, and it backs on to an apple orchard; a few minutes’ wander through here takes you out into a peaceful nature reserve. There are plenty more rural walks to be had nearby, but you don’t have to leave the site to see red kites circling overhead or to hear owls hooting at dusk. Archery lessons can be sorted on site, and there’s also the option of canoeing on the River Wye, though please call ahead to book these activities. There is a firepit and barbecue, along with a little cooking hut that has a simple gas stove and a table to gather round should the weather not be to your liking. You can buy free-range eggs for breakfast from a nearby farmhouse, and it’s a little further to walk to the nearest farm shop for fresh local produce and meat from the local butchery. In a nifty little touch, a bike is available for guests, so you can whizz up there easily enough to pick up supplies. If you fancy taking a break from the cooking (or wish to sample local tipples), there’s a pub 10 minutes’ walk away and a couple more within two miles. Please note that although this is an exclusive-use site it is not suitable for noisy parties – no amplified music is allowed. Sorry, no stag or hen parties.

Liked: Maggie’s Field was a wonderful site. Perfect for getting away from it all! The campfire and being able to cook our meals over it was the highlight of our trip. The smell of roast lamb cooking over the fire was amazing!
Maggie herself is a wonderful host, helpful and non intrusive but always on hand to stock up the log supply!
Big thank you Maggie, love Vicky and Robin.

Liked: Peaceful, safe site with stunning dawn chorus, wildlife and access to lovely walks. It was great having the whole site to meet with family. The kids loved the swing. Cook hut and outside table was very useful.

Disliked: A pot wash near the cook hut would be welcome.

Local attractions

On the other side of the Wye Valley, the massive stone slabs of Arthur’s Stone (10 minutes’ drive) are all that’s left of a Neolithic chambered tomb – or possibly a ceremonial site. Around the Middle Ages, the site started to become associated with the legendary King Arthur – hence the name. At the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (15 minutes), you can cuddle rabbits, alpacas and pygmy goats, and get close and personal with owls from all over the world. The splendid rural views and the café’s home-made cakes make it easy to linger a little longer… In Hereford (20 minutes), the medieval cathedral houses the Mappa Mundi, a map of the world as it was known in the early 14th century. Take a selfie with the statue of Sir Edward Elgar (depicted leaning against his bicycle as he admires the cathedral), then head towards the Wye and the riverside Bishops Meadow garden, with a playground and a labyrinth.
