Woodlands and Orchard View Holidays: On the site

General

  • Holiday homes in the peaceful Golden Valley, half hour from Hereford
  • Wildlife haven with 17 acres of woodland walks
  • Fenced-off picnic area outside and lounge with TV and DVD player

Head to Herefordshire’s Golden Valley for prime panoramas – the name says it all at Woodlands and Orchard View Holidays.

Drop your bags off in the accommodation, then look out for birds as you stroll through the site’s peaceful grounds and into 17 acres of leafy woodland, catching the views of the Black Mountains during your travels. The nearby River Dore – known for its fishing – adds to the scenic setting, and rumour has it that the sunsets from the park are spectacular.

When the sun’s gone down, settle in for cosy evenings in your well-equipped space – get the kettle on and line up a DVD to watch on the TV for a film night in the lounge.

Planning a family hol? The kids and dogs are welcome at these holiday homes set in the private grounds of Pontypinna Farm, half an hour’s drive from Hereford, so feel free to bring the whole gang along. The fenced-off picnic area means it’s easier to keep an eye on furballs and tiddlers when they’re outdoors.

The owners helpfully supply blankets, duvets, pillows, bed linen, towels and tea towels, so you can travel light (well, as light as you can with a dog and kids in tow…).

What a wonderful place! Stunning views all around and so peaceful. The caravan is like a cottage with everything needed for your stay. Mary is a gem, so friendly and welcoming, she even rang me twice on our day of arrival (which was most helpful) as there was a diversion due to a road closure. We drove on the Black Mountains and round the Olchon Valley, very small roads but well worth it for the scenery. The Pandy Inn (about a 15 minute drive) served us a delicious Sunday lunch. We will definitely be back.

    Disliked:

My mother was unable to walk her dog in the adjacent field due to the cows in there. She saw Mary as it was mentioned on the site that you could walk your dog (on a lead) so Mary said she’d deal with it and the next day the cows were herded into the next field and the gate was closed. Unfortunately one cow was left in there the next few days so mum couldn’t take the dog for a walk.

Lovely peaceful location, overlooking the orchard and farm animals. We initially took a wrong turn and called the owner Mary for help with directions, who could not have been more helpful and friendly. The break we had was very relaxed and the caravan very clean and comfortable.
Our 13 year old was very happy because the wifi was excellent.
We really enjoyed our stay here and would definitely recommend a stay here.

Lovely cottage feel to caravan, clean and inviting. Equipped with everything your likely to need. Welcomed by host who was always available should we need them. Great to stay on a working farm and see the animals being fed and the farmer was very happy to spend time talking to us. The retired sheepdog came to see us most days. Great location on the England/Wales border
Glad to have found this lovely hideaway in the countryside.

The peace and quiet of the area. Having your own privacy and space, being left to your own devices by host, but they are also available if required. Being on a working farm and seeing and experiencing all that comes with it. The bleeting of sheep, the sounds of nature, farm dogs, pigs the kids can visit, The caravan is fully equipped with everything you may need, just turn up with some food and drink and relax. There is even WiFi in the caravan that gives good speed , enough to stream fro a laptop of tablet etc. The owner is lovely and couldn't be more helpful. We and the kids 2 and 5 had a great time. They slept well!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but worth noting that there is very limited phone signal in the immediate location, (Which we found great) but it does mean that when you get near you may not be able to phone for directions as the farm itself only has a sign post on one side of the driveway. So if you come from the other direction you cannot see it. Also the postcode took us about 8 miles away. We ended up using the coordinates on the pitch up website and that worked well. We advised the owner ref the sign on the farm driveway. There is also only a small londis shop within I would say 8 miles. The biggest shop is in Hereford and is a Tesco or Asda so bear in mind no nipping to the shop for essentials. Best to bring the first nights food or drink etc with you or be prepared to eat out. Again not a criticism just advice as that's what holiday is about!

amazing holiday with our two grandchildren age 6 and 8, we stayed in orchard view.the van whilst older in style was spacious, clean, comfortable with excellent storage space and Mary the owner had supplied immaculate oven cloths/tea towels and towels. The bed linen was clean and plentiful for all weather conditions and lots of little extras like bin bags,matches/candle,fairy liquid, scourers, clingfilm, toilet roll if you had forgotten to bring help as a start up until you purchased. Also supplied for cleaning when leaving was bleach, freshener, detol etc, the shower was surprisingly powerful, oven new, and all other appliances worked well. there was plenty of plates, mugs, cutlery, utensils and kitchenware for cooking/self catering, we used only £5 in electric and still left some. The main bedroom is a large double with lots of storage, the 2nd double adequate but not as large. the view from the lounge were stunning a large field in front of the van with the woods behind and the others side overlooked a large field with beautiful views and sheep. It was great for the boys as there was no cattle in the field so they were able to play freely within our sight, and enjoyed opening the gate for jack on his quad bike to watch him feed the pigs twice daily.Gyp the retired sheepdog followed the boys everywhere to their delight and Mary engaged daily to make sure we were all happy , chatted about the farm and her family which we particularly enjoyed and her great local knowledge of the farm and surrounding areas were very helpful. The wifi has a booster so excellent connectivity though phone signal very weak but if you walked up the field you could get a low signal (perfect if you want to relax and get away from it!) Mary had a file with literature of local places, produce, restaurants takeaways etc if you preferred not to google. If you come here for walking, the countryside, cycling (adults) and exploring England and Wales you are perfectly situated. Wales was still in partial lock down for restaurants and pubs etc but Hereford is a large town with plenty of eateries great mix of chain and local stores, river was beautiful , leisure complex and fields/gardens very clean and tidy, we visited hay- on- wye, ross- on- wye historic market towns and everywhere we went seem to have a church or castle/ruins etc . All in all we had a great week, mix bunch of weather and because of covid this was the ideal place to be if you wanted to be far away from everybody else so thank you Mary and orchard view for providing this.
when i booked this holiday i did have reservations as there were no reviews to gauge however Mary has plenty of thank you cards and repeat bookings so maybe other people simply want to keep this little gem secret.

    Disliked:

This is more of an observation and based on our own experience but please note that a lot of the roads around the golden valley/abergavenny are very narrow, the locals may be used to this and do drive quite fast overtaking when full view cannot be seen, as an experienced cyclist i would cycle here being aware of the above but it wasn't suitable for younger children on bikes but maybe we were naive to this.

From the manager...

Hello to Kerry Jane Riley and Oliver, Thank you so much for the lovely plant . I am so pleased that you enjoyed your holiday,I loved seeing the boys tree climbing, sorry I was not around to say goodbye, hope to see you again.Best wishes Mary
